Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

It clearly wasn’t unusual as when I phoned to report it they just asked how much I needed to replace it yet ‘insisted’ they hadn’t seen it. It was worth a lot of money and had been inside a chest in the spare room rather than on show. I reported it to the police and funnily enough the vase appeared in their office the next day.

Holy crap! That’s just terrible.

goldtrap · 19/10/2025 08:44

My child managed to bump into an ornate display vase and smash it during a house viewing. I was so embarrassed and apologetic, I bought the house.
I hope your thieves are equally remorseful and you get an offer soon.

That was a very generous act of compensation on your part ;-)

LittleMoreLegAction · 19/10/2025 08:50

Another awful story. I am sorry this happened.

Those fools moaning about the candle cost need to engage their brains for a moment. This is about the principle of theft. It’s as bad to steal peaches, as a £180 candle or a £100k painting. Trust has been breached and a theft has been committed. Every act needs reporting.

I’m stunned at these people. Dreadful. I’d have involved the police.

LittleMoreLegAction · 19/10/2025 08:58

I hope the tabloids pick up on the price of the candle. It would be a very good headline. ‘Some people with money spend more than others on things they like’.

Unacceptableinthe80s · 19/10/2025 08:12

Whilst I agree with that sentiment in general, in this case the expense of the candle is sort of the point of the thread. I doubt we'd have the same thread or any thread if it was a £2 candle from Tesco.

Probably not, but if OP hadn’t been specific and had just said it was an expensive item, the thread would have filled up with posters insisting they needed to know what the item was to judge if it was worth reporting. Theft is theft.

PortSalutSherryHello · 19/10/2025 09:03

Your 'friends' sound like absolute cows.

Do you really go round people's houses totting up what stuff is worth so you can decide if it's an appropriate use of money?

You've really embarrassed yourself on this thread.

GinSwiggers · 19/10/2025 09:03

This is really simple @Calcaata

If someone has stole an item during a house viewing, you report it to the police.

It doesn't matter if it 's a candle or a £10K diamond ring.

There are 3 suspects- the EA, viewer 1 or viewer 2.

The police can get their details and talk to them.

Even if they refuse, based on the low value of the item, you will get it on record and that should give the agents a wake-up call.

PortSalutSherryHello · 19/10/2025 09:05

Sorry that was to @CoffeeCantata

PandoraSocks · 19/10/2025 09:06

CoffeeCantata · 19/10/2025 08:08

To be clear: I’m not condoning theft and I’m sorry for OP, but…

…I would be too embarrassed to tell anyone, let alone the overstretched police force, that I’d spent 180 quid on a ruddy candle.

Why? I find this attitude really odd. Do you never spend money on anything other than the very basic necessities? Obviously if you are living on the breadline, the answer will be no. But most people with some disposable income buy things they don't strictly need

This thread and the thread about a vendor taking the radiators are putting me off ever moving.

I hate when people kind of don’t pick up on the point that you’re trying to make and veer the conversation elsewhere. But I am going to do it anyway. A £150 candle? Honestly, have what you want in your homes , I’m sure it’s all hard earned. But you bury candles and they they are gone . Well they say every days a school day. I never knew! I mean do they smell amazing? Do they chase out evil spirits? Is it a thing to have very expensive candles?

Do you have CCTV cameras to check arrival and leaving? I would be furious as it's a massive betrayal of trust.

I'm assuming whoever took it must have had a decent size bag.

I agree. It’s really the only way to deal with it. Then you can legitimately phone the estate agent and tell them the police are dealing with it. Does a neighbour maybe have a ring doorbell that you can look at? You never know, they might have just walked out holding it.

I’ve just had a quick Look at the Diptyque website and the candles are just part of a range of higher end home decor, fragrances, bath and body, gifts etc. The candles are beautiful, decorative pieces with gorgeous fragrances. I don’t know why OP is coming in for such a pasting for owning one - l’m definitely adding one to my list for Santa this year !! Link to website below.

Nice idea! And OP, I would be horrified if someone made off with mine.

MissPobjoysPonies · 19/10/2025 09:12

when Selling our last home, we came back to find dog shit treaded throughout the house. We had requested people took their shoes off to the EA as we had a newly crawling baby.

I was fucking livid, not about the shoes but about the complete lack of care to our home.

oh and BTW diptique? We bought a diptique room spray to use at our wedding to remind us of where we’d got engaged (couldn’t afford to put a candle on each table) it was extravagant. I love that room spray and it still smells amazing. We got married 21 years ago.

Thaimonstera · 19/10/2025 09:13

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 23:21

Yes and I loved it, I’ve seen some Diptyque candles that are £300.

OT but how do you pronounce Diptyque?

DotAndCarryOne2 · 19/10/2025 09:13

CoffeeCantata · 19/10/2025 08:25

They’d be sniggering behind their hands!

This is genuinely interesting. In my world (and I know some wealthy people, though I wouldn’t put myself in that category) this would be shocking.

Seriously - I’m learning a lot about how others live! I really have never met anyone who would do that or who wouldn’t judge it.

So your social circle consists of people who would judge others for spending their own disposable income on things they liked and made them happy ? You need to get out more !!

Do you ever go out to eat? What a waste! You eat the food and then it's gone!

Horsie · 19/10/2025 09:14

I would be surprised. The estate agent has their reputation to risk, and if it was a viewer, they're easily traceable. Plus the agent follows them around, I think, precisely so this sort of thing doesn't happen.

Are you absolutely SURE you didn't put it in a safe place?

Ewock · 19/10/2025 09:14

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/10/2025 00:28

It’s not a stupid question. No candle is worth that. Anyone who thinks it is is daft. No need to read the whole thread.

Have you ever come across the concepts that 1, people have different tastes. And 2, it is none of your business what people spend their money on.
If the op likes it and has the money and wants to spend it like that it is none of your business.
Christ the judgement from others is unreal. More judging that op had the termerity to pay £180 for an item she loves, than the fact that the viewer is a thief!

Christmascakeforbreakfast · 19/10/2025 09:16

I can’t help but laugh at the faux horror. John Lewis sell these candles, LOTS of people clearly buy them 😂

Im going to now too. Coz I’ve got more money than sense.

ArticSea · 19/10/2025 09:16

agree with PP. Report to police and get a crime number and pass that on to EA on Monday.

LittleMoreLegAction · 19/10/2025 09:18

Do all those fainting at the cost of this candle, drink any alcohol? Because in many ways that’s money down the drain too. No nutritional value and it’s ‘gone’. But it gives you several hours of pleasure I am guessing, so it’s worth it for you.

I reckon this candle may even be better value. As it will be fragrant for many hours but be a pleasing ornament for much longer !

I have never spent more than £25 on a candle but I can see a market for more expensive and beautiful ones. People are so narrow-minded and mean-spirited here!

DotAndCarryOne2 · 19/10/2025 09:18

PandoraSocks · 19/10/2025 09:13

Do you ever go out to eat? What a waste! You eat the food and then it's gone!

Yep. There will be people commenting on the candle price who think nothing of spending similar amounts on perfume. They buy them to make themselves smell gorgeous. Diptyque candles make a whole home smell gorgeous, so arguably better value for money. After all you have a wash and the perfume is gone !!

GinSwiggers · 19/10/2025 09:19

Maybe the posters who are horrified over the price of the candle can start their own thread...

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU SPEND ON A CANDLE?

Otherwise, bugger off and stick to the topic. The price of the candle is NOT the point.

AussieManque · 19/10/2025 09:20

To be honest I don't understand why people burn scented candles indoors when the evidence is clear that they pollute the air. So you're paying hundreds of pounds to make the air you breathe dirtier...

Wax melts also release harmful VOCs.
