To wonder if the rise in gender confusion is due to

The levels of oestrogen in water? For many years now the levels of female hormones in the water supply has been steadily building up, due to the use of hormonal contraception, which cannot be filtered out of the waste water, as well as agricultural practices which contaminate water due to run off from fields into the water supply. This has been affecting marine life for a long time, so it stands to reason that it’s also affecting humans.

I’m sure there’s other factors too, there seems to be a disproportionate number of SEN teens confused about their gender, so maybe it’s a feeling of not belonging for them which leads them to think that they must have been born in the wrong body and that’s why they don’t fit in. But is it possible that there is a rise in genuine confusion in males feeling like females due to the female hormones they’re ingesting every day?

Disclaimer - I’m not a scientist so happy to be corrected!

I work in a mental health profession and completely agree with this comment. I very rarely come across people where I would feel genetics is the root of their need to transition - the rest have unfortunately experienced trauma which has resulted in their decision.
A reasonable number of clients I’m in professional contact with, have reversed their decision to transition once the early trauma has been addressed.

Thank you - that's interesting.

Social contagion, vulnerable and ASD teens made even more vulnerable by lockdown which increased social isolation, and male sexual fetish.

Not the water.

When I was at school in the mid 00s it was immensely popular to be bisexual. Being gay not so much and gay boys in particular were bullied but being bi became a bit of a fashionable fad. Now it seems to be non-binary. It’s fashionable to use ‘they/them’ pronouns. I have no issue with people being gender critical, fucking around with fashion and haircuts and whatever else. The pronoun thing is just a bit cringe though.

As soon as I see someone is a they/them or even worse a she/they (what?!), I kind of get a gist for the sort of person they will be. Usually alternative style, which again I dressed that way as a teen too so no judgement but there does seem to be a link between that world and being non-binary. Have definitely also noticed a link with SEN or disabled people.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/10/2025 11:02

This is all so sad. Society has allowed children to be gaslit that a change of sex will cure their uncomfortable developing bodies and emotional vulnerabilities.
It's shameful as we know the impact of social contagion amongst children / young people in relation to eating disorders, suicidal ideation, self harm etc. Yet schools, the NHS, universities etc have allowed adults / groups with a vested interest in transitioning to sell their ideology to children who are emotionally and intellectually too young to navigate this complex set of beliefs.

The impact of this plus social contagion has resulted in thousands of children / young people giving up their future fertility, sexual function and good physical / mental health. Collectively we've failed to safeguard them with too many believing the lies they're told about "harmless" drugs and surgery.

These are adult decisions. As they realise the grim consequences of the life changing decisions they've made before they reached maturity, their rage and despair will be immense.

Maybe.
I don’t think it’s a chemical difference though.
My take on it is that there are basically two different paths - being a girl having a traumatic childhood (Cass report identified that 97.5% of transitioning teens are autistic, abused, neglected or have severe mental illness). This is a fad much like goths, and has parallels to other mental conditions like anorexia and bulimia, affecting a similar demographic and with a similar contagion effect. This is encouraged by the rise in more inflexible gender stereotypes over the last few years. The only difference in how it’s been treated is that trans has been wholly validated rather than being seen for what it is.

Then we have the men, and the catastrophic rise in porn culture which starts younger than ever before, and violent videos are easier to find now. Porn is addictive and these men need to find ever more ways to get their rocks off.
Transsexuals of the past tended to be gay men with internalised homophobia. Whilst they do still exist the majority of trans identified men are now AGP - turned on by viewing themselves as women and by others viewing them as such, whilst still behaving in very much male ways, and many also getting off on humiliation. Again this is treated by validating.

To me it’s fairly obvious that it’s a societal issue that people have been manipulated into.

Can I ask a q about AGP.? If you are turned on by dressing as a woman and others seeing you as such, do these men walk around in a permanently aroused state? How do they manage throughout a night in a club or walking around a supermarket etc.

Not being a scientist either I couldn't comment on the water supply.
My own concerns with gender identification is that there is still too much gendering in society. Clothes, toys, what activities you can do. So when for example someone born male wants to wear pink and do ballet rather than just being allowed by society there is negativity about it. They then might question if their gender as they don't fit the mould they are told they are meant to be in. I also think this will impact neuro diverse people more as they already struggle to fit in a world designed to work best for neuro typical people.

Boys who do ballet don't wear pink.

There is nothing to stop boys who do ballet wearing pink. It doesn’t turn them into girls.

I think if oestrogen in water was having any affect on people it would be more likely to manifest in the typical physical symptoms of an oestrogen imbalance. So I'd imagine men would be more likely to be experiencing ED, gynecomastia and infertility than a compulsion to wear a dress and use the ladies toilets.

ED increasing too.

T levels falling generally in men.

This T level drop has been ongoing since the 1980s.

I know some feminists are wary of these studies as they fear they could be used by extreme people to restrict the Pill etc or to call for a reassertion of 'real masculinity' that demonises non-masculine men & means women have to occupy only traditional roles. But the medical issues are important and it's wrong to ignore them in case they get misused. In fact, it makes them more likely to get misused if we ignore them.

This clearly isn't my area of expertise but is it just oestrogen that's the issue? Could increased use of the progesterone-only pill make any difference?

I meant that as two separate examples of things many people in society don't like boys doing, not that they wear pink while doing ballet. Rubbish use of language on my part.

Wow…not sure where I blamed women for anything 🤣. More suggesting a possible factor for the huge surge of boys thinking they’re girls.

There isn’t a huge surge of boys thinking their girls.

There has been a huge surge in girls wanting to identify out of womanhood.

Exactly. The stuff I mentioned upthread about lower T levels, rising levels of male infertility & ED is worrying, but I don't think it's linked to trans issues as much since the younger generation are mostly girls trying to become boys.

BrizzleMaverick · 19/10/2025 23:33

Wow, so we don’t need to beg the GP for HRT when we become perimenopausal, we just need to drink more water!!! 🤦‍♀️🙈😂😆

Mumofteenandtween · 19/10/2025 23:59

Being a tween / teen girl is really unbelievably shit. One minute you are happily running round the playground and then the next your chest has grown to be all uncomfortable, you are bleeding like a horror movie and men are shouting stuff at you as they drive past in vans.

And girls these days are offered a loophole. Why wouldn’t they take it? I would have.

PastaAllaNorma · 20/10/2025 00:00

Given that it's the historically unheard-of levels of girls taking on trans identities (4400% increase in just a few years), I don't think oestrogen is the issue, @Checkcheckout

Bluemin · 20/10/2025 00:20

I think the main answer lies in the statistics that show the massive rise in trans identification from 2020 lock downs when teens lived their entire social lives on the Internet. Its now showing huge deceleration.

None of that could be explained by hormones in the water.

Perhaps I was unclear and you have misunderstood me - boys who do ballet don't wear pink in their ballet class. They wear white, blue or black, with either white or black shoes. No pink in sight.

I was railing against the ballet = pink stereotype. There's a lot of it about. Boys can like ballet and hate pink.

Boys who like pink like pink. Nothing wrong with that at all.

😂My dd did ballet for a considerable number of years and her dance uniform colours were a whole parade of pale blue, navy blue, black, navy again, teal, plum, pale blue again, burgundy, more black, white, red, more black... She's an adult now and still dances, and I don't think she's ever had anything pink in her entire (ridiculously huge) dancewear collection.

We shouldn't be too negative though.. I know it can be that way for many. There is a lot of variation though.

Speaking for myself, I'm practically flat-chested, which I've always been fine with, so boob growth was never a big deal. I realise larger breasts can be painful...but is this often the case even when someone has a properly supportive bra? Maybe I'm naive about this...

Periods didn't seem like a horror film to me : I started them when I was only 10, but I knew all about them & it seemed exciting more than anything. I did have horrible cramps, but have found ways to manage (I know it's not always that easy).

Men shouting- I'm lucky to live in a super quiet place, never been shouted at once, even by builders. I think this one key though: clearly a lot of girls do have this. More than that, though, porn & general oversexualised culture have made everything worse.

This Substack article I think is quite good at pinpointing that a lot of girls do enjoy the changes of puberty, and distress can come from not changing fast enough, as well as from changing. The main thing that causes distress across the board, whether girls are enjoying the bodily changes or not, is unwanted sexual attention (ofc wanted sexual attention is potentially harmful too- always so in the case of older men)

https://www.allcatsarefemale.com/p/we-must-we-must-we-must-increase

It's worth noting that boys experience some uncomfortable changes too : voice changes, wet dreams etc What they don't have so much sexual objectification & abuse in porn culture.

We must, we must, we must increase our bust!

Most girls are much more excited than they are distressed by the onset of puberty

Definitely naive. Large boobs can cause back pain. Bras are nearly always uncomfortable to some degree, including supportive bras - they are, afterall, supporting several pounds on each side. Not wearing bras is also uncomfortable - some have to wear sleep bras too. Bras are big and expensive. Oh to wear a strappy summer top or dress without a bra underneath! My swimming costumes are expensive as have built in bras too. That is before the fact that they simply get in the way; they are a pain for sports (literally) and have to be strapped down in sweaty sports bras.

And, yes, big breasts definitely attract male unwanted attention.

I'm so sorry, that sounds very hard... I don't suppose there is any option of surgical help? (I understand you might not want that).

How common is it for larger breasts to cause this kind of discomfort? I'd assumed it wasn't very common, but probably that's not the case...
