Where’s good to live West Yorkshire?

ThebigDees · 16/10/2025 16:28

To ask for help with dd buying her first house?
she’s looking for 2 bedrooms, with easy access to Leeds city centre, preferably Halifax, Bradford, Wakefield areas but we don’t know the best and worst parts of these towns to live in.
if you live in these towns and cities can you tell me the better areas to live please? She has a car, but wants to use the train to Leeds.
if anyone knows of anything near them that would be suitable please can you link? Price is £140,000 ( £150 MAX), 2 beds and parking.
thanks all Grin

I can only speak for Bradford as it's my hometown. I suggest Greengates, Queensbury, Wibsey, Baildon. Basically the very outskirts. On the edge of Leeds near Greengates is Calverley and Apperley Bridge which are nice areas. I think Saltaire is nice as well but I've only ever been a handful of times.
Also, Ilkley, Oxenhope, Silsden etc. There are a lot of nice places actually now I come to think of it.

Yes, I live in one of those areas and I agree.

Saltaire is a nightmare for parking and I don't think you'll get somewhere with its own parking for that price. I'd look at Shipley, there's more affordable areas with parking.

Yes. Saltaire is dreadful for parking.

DenmarkGirl · 16/10/2025 18:12

Cleckheaton is lovely and close to Leeds 😊

Halfull · 16/10/2025 18:17

You’d struggle on £140k for that size in Baildon or Saltaire though both lovely. The £140k properties are in the far dodgier parts of both. I’d try Shipley, it can be erm… lively in the centre but possible on that budget and fast and regular trains to Leeds… fifteen minute journey arriving around every ten minutes at peak time.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 16/10/2025 18:18

Saltaire, Bingley, Skipton all on the train to Leeds and nice. Avoid Keighley centre- Riddlesden no longer great but East Morton and Crossflatts OK.
steeton and Silsden ok.

DenmarkGirl · 16/10/2025 18:25

Worth also considering Liversedge and Batley

DenmarkGirl · 16/10/2025 18:39

Addingham is a lovely village but may be outside price range

ThebigDees · 16/10/2025 21:19

Thanks for all your suggestions, lots to look at, I lived in crossgates years ago (35!) and it was a bit hairy at times, is it an ok place now? I know it has a decent shopping centre and a train station, which would be ideal.

I live in Crossgates and amazed at others recommending a 2 bed property is within budget. It should be, but really isnt

bluesky9 · 16/10/2025 21:30

@ThebigDees the shopping centre is shite, transport links are good and it's overall fine

Sherunswithwolves · 16/10/2025 17:48

Saltaire would be excellent but your budget allows for an apartment rather than a house unless you're very lucky. But, it has its own train station and very good bus links too, and a lively arts and cafe scene. Bingley is on the same train line and also a nice place.

Have a look at Skipton too as you could just be lucky: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/168251225#/?channel=RES_BUY

Wibsey and Queensbury are at the wrong side of Bradford for the train.

Anything on the Wharfedale train line (Guiseley round to Ilkley) will be out of budget.

Wibsey is incredibly accessible for low moor train station where parking is free all day. Leeds in 20 mins, Manchester in 50. It's been a godsend and huge money saver to me!

When I said that I’d had a quick Look at Rightmove but realised later the OP wanted a house rather than a flat. Someone upthread suggested Kippax but no train link there. Micklefield could be worth looking at, not sure of prices.

CryMyEyesViolet · 16/10/2025 21:49

The villages in the outskirts of Huddersfield are also good options. You can definitely get a house for that price in a reasonably decent area too. The local stations service Manchester better than Leeds, but it’s an easy switch at Huddersfield from my local station to get into Leeds within 30-40 mins, and 40 mins to Manchester.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 16/10/2025 21:51

I agree @bluesky9 there isn't anything in Crossgates for £140k.

My sister lives there and I can't think of anywhere except a flat nearer Halton Moor than Crossgates that would be in the OP's budget. Her house is a standard (small) semi and that's worth over £250k...

Shouldhavelovedathunderbird · 16/10/2025 21:51

Todmorden may get you nearer to budget but although inexpensive on the train, it can take a while. She may need to be west of Leeds rather than east.

PastaAllaNorma · 16/10/2025 22:40

Aye, Crossgates centre has had so many shops shut down in the last 3 or 4 years that it's a bit of a ghost town. Not what it was. The main shopping centre used to be great but is desolate now.

I haven't seen anything within the OP's budget that wasn't a flat or a bit of a disaster needing a lot of investment.

Not an a train line though. I wouldnt call it lovely either.

Cross gates is v accessible for Leeds city centre ..both by train and by bus ( excellent bus service). But it’s getting quite run down now, and the main shopping centre has lots of empty units. Bits of it quite dodgy which is sad cos its my home town.

I really think she needs to consider a flat at that price .

Liversidge not accessible by train but Batley is. Not much in Liversedge though

Can you say more about how Riddlesden has changed? I’m intrigued as used to live there many years ago.

Dexies · 16/10/2025 23:21

Close to train station in Bingley

Bingley is a great little town, lively community vibe , 3 supermarkets , whole food store , weekly markets , theatre & arts centre , a petrol station with M&S. and only 20 or so mins to Leeds on the train

Check out this 2 bedroom terraced house for sale on Rightmove

2 bedroom terraced house for sale in Raven Street, Bingley, BD16 for £140,000. Marketed by Martin and Co, Keighley

It’s ok now, but I don’t think she will get anything within budget. I looked recently and a driveless terraced house was nearly £300k! A 1 bed flat on Pendas way is £120k. The shopping centre isn’t great but there are lots of bars and restaurants now.

I agree with the Wakefield suggestion, I work city centre and there is a lot of investment going into it which would suggest now is a good time to buy to me. All of the new city fields site, Stanley, bottomboat, Ossett might be suitable along with the centre itself.

Tomomomatoes · 17/10/2025 07:57

Slaithwaite or Marsden for the train. Meltham or Holmfirth and drive to the station. Dunno about that budget though but all are lovely towns/ communities.
