Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We sleep in a double. Haven’t ever considered not doing in the 15 years we’ve been together. On holiday with twin beds pushed together I often end in his side with him!

AbsentosaurusRex · 16/10/2025 17:09

Totally agree. A standard double is basically a single bed, for average sized adults.

I am actually doing great thank you. Answering the question is absolutely fine, but I agreed with the poster I quoted/or failed to attach quote. Sorry I have offended you.

Edited

You didn't quote anyone.

We sleep in a standard double and we’re a pair of lumps. It’s either that or we get rid of other furniture and keep our knickers and pants in carrier bags shoved down each side of the bed.

It’s fine though. We’ve got a very firm mattress and I think that helps. Neither of us feel like we’re being bounced off the edge.

We have got king sized duvets though.

Peridoteage · 16/10/2025 17:09

I can easily share a double. The only reason we have a king at home is DH is 6ft 3.

I wonder if a lot of people are simply more overweight now.

I do also think the trend of giving teens a double bed to themselves basically teaches them to sleep taking up more space. When i was a teenager no one had a double! A single was considered absolutely fine for one adult, lots of my friends had 2ft 6 twin beds.

DH used to come and share my single bed in student accommodation..... we managed fine!

Ariela · 16/10/2025 17:10

We have small bedrooms (former agricultural workers house hence the small rooms to get round planning), so can only fit a double. Hubby is 6ft 3 and we fit just fine (we do cuddle up).
Our mattress is a lovely BRITISH made Hypnos one, so we don't roll together with that.

teacupzs · 16/10/2025 17:11

Yes & we are both tall

Ah OK, an extra 5 cm then, thanks for the info. I fear our guest sofa bed is a standard double ... cringe

Haha, and don't forget the extra 10cm length!

My guest sofa bed is the same, and I paid a pretty penny for it too so I was disappointed to find out it's not as comfortable as advertised! It is the biggest we could fit in the room though so there's not much I can do about it.

housethatbuiltme · 16/10/2025 17:16

of course we do, what else would we sleep in?

'Always rolling together or clinging to the edge'

We tend to sleep cuddled up together in the middle so no worry about 'touching' each other, if your so adverse to coming in contact with your partner maybe its time to look at 2 singles. I know many long term couples who sleep separate due to snoring or health issue that mean they struggle to sleep or are up and down lots (like prostate issues) etc...

I'm actually looking at new beds and debating switching our standard for a small double as its FAR cheaper but only 15cm less in size.

ThatGlimmeringSea · 16/10/2025 17:16

Standard double here, two of us plus the dog. It’s luxury compared to the space we sleep in on holiday…the back of a campervan.

elliejjtiny · 16/10/2025 17:17

Dh and i have a double. I love it but a bigger duvet would be nice in winter when it's really cold. We had 2 twin beds pushed together when we were homeless and that felt way too big.

Except that my grandfather was 5ft 4" and my grandma was 4ft 10 - so I imagine a double bed was more comfortable for them than it is for myself and DH. I'm 5ft 10 and DH is 6ft 4. We're also considerably fatter than people were in WW2.

For our grandparents/parents/greats born before the war the standard couples bed was 4’ not 4’6” which is the modern standard double.

My parents were 6’4” and 5’8” and had a then normal 4’ double until they were in their 40s and finally lived somewhere with the space for more. My grandparents, born in Edwardian times were 6’2” and 5’10” and also had the then standard 4’ double for most of their lives. I’m 5’10, DH was 6’3”, our children are slightly taller - all of us standard doubles until a year ago when one DC moved to the European equivalent of 5’ but mainly because the style they wanted wasn’t available at UK standard size.

Not sure when the standard size increased to 4’6” - I’m guessing not before the 60s for working people. I think the pp upthread was right. We will always use more space, that doesn’t make it difficult to switch back.

Storynanny1 · 16/10/2025 17:20

We had a standard double for ages, only upgraded to king size last year in our late 60’s! Can’t even remember why we did, as we were quite happy in the standard - I expect it was on a special offer or something.
We even manage on a camper van” double” for a week at a time which is prob equivalent to a small double.
When we go away in a hotel I can’t say I really notice what size bed we are in - with the exception being if they are singles, I do find that a bit small. Having said that, our spare bedroom has a tiny 2’6” shorty bed for any visiting little grandchildren - it’s the only bed we could fit in the small room - and if one of us has a cold, cough or snoring too much we even manage in that.
5’2” size 12 and 5’9” about 12 stone so not tiny but not huge.

CarpetKnees · 16/10/2025 17:31

Of course people sleep in double beds.
I would think the overwhelming majority of people who share a bed do.
Perfectly normal.
No clinging on to the edge here either, and neither of us would be described as petite.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 16/10/2025 17:33

We always book a twin room for holidays because of this.

Do people realise that a "standard double" was originally 4'0" , not 4'6" ?!?!

It's the size of the double that is the question, read the thread.

BotterMon · 16/10/2025 17:35

Well a standard double is only 190cm long and my DH is 194cm so no, we don't sleep in a standard double. It's a length not a width issue for us.

I like a king as find a super king too big.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/10/2025 17:36

Of course they do, what am odd thing to say. I share a double. I can't really understand how you wouldn't fit?

Ddakji · 16/10/2025 17:37

AngelinaFibres · 16/10/2025 17:04

You sound very angry. The question was ' Do any couples sleep in a standard bed. ". People are answering the question. Some like a small bed, some don't, some don't have a choice because of room size. Perhaps you should put the kettle on .

That poster doesn’t sound angry at all! But perhaps they touched a nerve?

Biggles27 · 16/10/2025 17:38

We sleep, and have done for over 25 years, in a super king. Who wants to be touching at 3am 😂

Imbrocator · 16/10/2025 17:38

Hell no. Even a king size isn’t as wide as two single beds, which most adults find too small to comfortably sleep in as a single person.

MadamePompom · 16/10/2025 17:39

We have a standard double but upsized to a king size duvet!

MiddleAgedDread · 16/10/2025 17:41

My BF has one and let's just say I sleep better when we stay at mine in my king size!

CarpetKnees · 16/10/2025 17:41

I read the first couple of pages and all the OPs posts, thanks.

What do you think I've missed ?
The OP wants to know if couples sleep in a standard double bed.
The answer is, yes, of course they do.

I'll also add that a bigger bed wouldn't even fit comfortably in many bedrooms across the country.

MissJeanBrodiesmother · 16/10/2025 17:42

I have a standard double and it is perfect fine. Not luxurious but OK.
