Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

If a standard double is 140 cm wide, we do 😐
Separate mattresses (different firmness) and separate duvets, though.

We have a guest sofa bed that I always used to think was fine, very comfortable etc, and had lots of people sleep on it and nobody said a word. This summer we slept on it ourselves for the first time in ages, and had exactly the OP’s problem.
What polite guests we have …

A standard double is 135 x 190. A European double is 140 x 200 so maybe that's what you have.

We slept in a superking for over a year when we had to live in a rented property while we had some work done. Moving back into a standard double wasn’t the wrench I thought it would be. We’d go up to King if we had space but I couldn’t be bothered with changing the bedding on a Super, not to mention it having to go in the machine in two separate washes because it didn’t all fit in together. Too much of a faff.

Fair enough. The super is a confusing square to change bedding on.

I must confess I went up to a 10kg washing machine and dryer when the machine broke.

Love your username BTW.

I'd rather just have my own bed - I hate sleeping with anybody!

Were they not hoping/fighting for a better world?

One where people could sleep in any kind of bed they wanted.

Quite. The amount of martyrdom on this thread is hilarious.

I hope they’ve all got the kind of teeny couch people used to have in ye olden days. Or maybe a hard settle.

Standard double is fine for us (and the cat) if we stay in a bigger bed in a hotel I wake up feeling a bit lonely with DP at the other side of the bed 😆

Ah OK, an extra 5 cm then, thanks for the info. I fear our guest sofa bed is a standard double ... cringe

Standard double at home, no problem for us both.
Currently away with. Super king sized and find it very strange.

We have a standard too. Victorian house has lots of rooms but they're not big enough for anything bigger. Husband is tall and slim. I'm 5'4" and slim. Don't like huge beds when we're away. I like to turn over in the night and cuddle up. He's too far away in a big bed.

Lollipop2025 · 16/10/2025 16:59

We have a double. Not remotely fussed by it.

TeaRoseTallulah · 16/10/2025 17:00

We have slept in a super long for the last 18 years, when we go away we wither have a twin or King as anything smaller and we'd be up all night.

AutumnnotFall · 16/10/2025 17:01

7 foot 1 and sleep in a single, don't know anybody that doesn't, not overweight though.
🙄 It is crazy isn't it? A competition of who can sleep in the smallest bed, because "nice and light", or alternatively larger and still heaps of space, or "I like my husband." God forbid somebody can just like a larger bed, sleep together or apart, or alternate - oh and actually like each other at the same time!

Illbethereinaminute · 16/10/2025 17:01

We do because the king size bed I wanted was too big for our room so we went with the double version instead. Years later I've realised that actually our bed frame is the same size as a king so we can get a king if it's a divan so that's a job for next year.

We do ok in a double, we sleep fine but that little bit of extra space for limbs is really helpful so then nobody ends up right at the edge.

Maybe in the future if we have a big enough bedroom we could get a super king but it just wouldn't be possible in the house we have now.

SwarmsofLadybirds · 16/10/2025 17:01

CobraChicken · 16/10/2025 16:51

No, not in North America at least. I'm in Canada and my queen size bed is the same size as our king size bed was back in the UK. Our spare room here has a king size bed and it's way wider than our UK king was.

In answer to the OP's question, I am sure we'd be fine with a standard double if that was what we were used to, but I'd struggle now that we're used to having the extra space.

I think in the UK a queen is a small double. At least, according to chatgpt!

SwarmsofLadybirds · 16/10/2025 17:03

BruFord · 16/10/2025 16:36

@SwarmsofLadybirds I don’t think so, we used to have a double and this is def. bigger. Requires a larger size mattress cover and sheets.

We’re in the US so perhaps it’s different?

Ah yes, I think a queen in the US is equivalent to a king in the UK. According to chatgpt anyway!

Yes, a Queen is not a UK double bed; it is closest to a UK King size bed. A UK double bed is narrower than an American Queen.

You sound very angry. The question was ' Do any couples sleep in a standard bed. ". People are answering the question. Some like a small bed, some don't, some don't have a choice because of room size. Perhaps you should put the kettle on .

Sophiablue95 · 16/10/2025 17:04

Me and my ex used to have one. He’s 6ft8 and I’m 5ft 8 😅 It wasn't too bad, he used to hang his legs off the end and I sleep on my side so dony take up much room.

Bingbangboo · 16/10/2025 17:05

I sleep in a super king, mostly on my own. There is no way I could share a double with my husband - I'm much too intolerant! We won't book a holiday home unless there is at least a king size, or enough rooms for separate beds.

Well said. Some of us like our space.

I am actually doing great thank you. Answering the question is absolutely fine, but I agreed with the poster I quoted/or failed to attach quote. Sorry I have offended you.

parkrunpenny · 16/10/2025 17:07

We went from a king sized bed to a double when we moved bedrooms. It has not been a problem, we both sleep soundly. Probably helps that we bought a new bed with a fabulous mattress so no rolling together.

And me …what’s wrong with a double, OH is 6’ tall and we have bags of room each.
I don’t like big beds they’re lonely 😊

angustifolia · 16/10/2025 17:07

It's probably just what you're used to, but trying to sleep in a much smaller bed than you're accustomed to is difficult, especially if you like/need space. I would be sweaty, hot, and uncomfortable if DH was lying right up against me all night. That's not being princessy. It's just a fact.

tripleginandtonic · 16/10/2025 17:08

Only ever had a double bed, at uni me and bfs shared a single

LittleCarrot12 · 16/10/2025 17:08

Standard double. New builds are tiny so not much choice. Sometimes have 2 kids in as well !
