Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Yep. Standard double as in a small attic room so not space for anything bigger.

Menonut · 16/10/2025 17:42

Yep. And have done since we got married 26 years ago. Husband is 6ft and we’re both not small (anymore!). Never had an issue. We do have a king size duvet to stop the arguing over covers though.

boxofbuttons · 16/10/2025 17:44

We had one for years and didn't have any issues. We've got a superking now and I don't think I could go back but only because I'm used to it - we were fine in a double (and neither of us were small people at the time, plus DH is tall).

MagicLoop · 16/10/2025 17:46

We've been together 25 years and have never had anything but a standard double. It's fine! I hate memory foam - we just have a normal mattress.

JillMW · 16/10/2025 17:47

Ha, ours is king but often we sleep in other rooms in the house in double or small double. We sleep fine in any. Oh very tall but no issues. Mind you we slept for years in a single or a mattress on the floor in out poor days. I always think this is how I know we are compatible, I would not be so comfy with anyone else.

spiderlight · 16/10/2025 17:47

We do. Always have. We're both quite small but we usually have a cocker spaniel between us for most of the night and we manage fine.

kurotora · 16/10/2025 17:50

Yes we sleep in a double, with our 5 year old plonking herself in the middle during the night, and 3 cats who seem capable of monopolising huge chunks of bed. Hardly any homes in our price range had bedrooms big enough for anything else unless you wanted no drawers or wardrobe!

ColourThief · 16/10/2025 17:51

We do. We are living in a house severely too small for our family, overcrowded doesn’t even come close to describing how bad it is.
Our bedroom is so small that we can barely fit our standard double in there alongside our baby’s cot.
You can’t walk around the bed, there’s not enough space and I have to crawl across the bed to get to my side which is up against a wall.

I’d just like a big enough bedroom/house, let alone a larger bed.

Poisonwood · 16/10/2025 17:51

I had a super-king for a wee while, about six months but couldn’t stand it and went back to having a double. We do have a king size quilt on though, stops any draughts.

dahliadream · 16/10/2025 17:53

We have a super king and I absolutely cannot sleep in a standard double with my husband, it is TOO SMALL. Would say we are both average height and weight too.

user2848502016 · 16/10/2025 17:54

We have a king and had the same when we stayed at a holiday let with a double! Two fairly average sized adults

user5972308467 · 16/10/2025 17:55

Married 30 years and have always had a super-king. I think we’d have been divorced at the end of the 1990’s otherwise!

MaurineWayBack · 16/10/2025 17:57

I’m discovering g why it seems all hotels now have kind size beds. People wouldn’t be able to cope otherwise…

Yes @Shamrockshirley we have a standard double. Always have. Both of is overweight too and somehow still manage to sleep well 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Alittlefrustrated · 16/10/2025 17:57

We have a standard double. It didn't enter my head to buy any bigger.
We have a firm mattress, so no rolling together unless we want to.
Even if we bought a king-size, I would still be on the edge on my side, as DP follows me across if I move.

Mt563 · 16/10/2025 17:58

Double at home, find a super king waay to large when had one at hotel, felt lonely!!

Simplelobsterhat · 16/10/2025 17:58

We always have and we've lived together 20 years! I think the trick is never to have a king size in the first place, and then it's what you are used to!

OnlyOnAFriday · 16/10/2025 17:58

Spent 20 years in a standard double with dh. I did insist on a king a few years ago, dh was resistant but I do prefer it. Saying that I never fell out the bed or met in the middle unintentionally (i don’t like being touched when trying to sleep) so they’re possible to sleep in. But a king is better. I’m less aware of him 😂

YY about the duvet being king size!
Now THAT solved many issues

PeonyPatch · 16/10/2025 17:59

We currently sleep in a standard double - it might even be a small double. I would agree it’s too small… barely any room to move around. Trouble is I don’t think we could fit a bigger bed in that room!! Would love king size

DidIForgetPEAgain · 16/10/2025 18:00

I find Kings to be quite tough TBH. Emperor is the goal

Agree re kingsize duvet that’s what we use on our double bed… so cosy

Bloozie · 16/10/2025 18:08

I think it depends on the couple. My ex, we slept in a standard double and it was plenty big enough. My husband, it is definitely not big enough and I'd be on the floor rather than try, too.

Nothing to do with body size. It's how restless you are as a sleeper, and sleep position. My husband sleeps flat on his back, arms by his side, duvet pulled primly up to his neck, he lies as still as a corpse all night and sleeps so heavily nothing can move him, and he therefore fully takes up half a double bed at all times, like an immoveable slab of concrete*.

Me and my ex both sleep on our sides with a preference to facing the same wall - natural spoons. We both preferred the duvet lower down our bodies and were both restless sleepers too, so we could dance around each other in our sleep without disturbing each other. it was no problem, we didn't wake each other up.

*Aside - I find the way my husband sleeps utterly baffling/slightly uncanny. It's how I imagine a humanoid robot would sleep.

Makingadecision · 16/10/2025 18:08

We had a super king and sized down because we realised we were so far apart in the bed! Now in a double and much happier and warmer and have more space in the room

Moellen54 · 16/10/2025 18:09

Well a double was all that was available not so many years ago. And you wouldnt get a king or queen bed in our bedroom in our new house unless you made another room a dressing room!

zingally · 16/10/2025 18:10

My DH and I did for many years, and only upgraded to a queen when we moved and had a bigger bedroom.
My sister and her OH share a double, as do my best friend and her DH. None of us are small by any stretch.
My parents also shared a double the better part of 30 years, and my dad was a BIG bloke.
