Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Imagine if our grandparents and great grandparents who lived through world wars and sheltered underground at night as they were bombed could read this thread.

Except that my grandfather was 5ft 4" and my grandma was 4ft 10 - so I imagine a double bed was more comfortable for them than it is for myself and DH. I'm 5ft 10 and DH is 6ft 4. We're also considerably fatter than people were in WW2.

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 16/10/2025 16:36

We have a standard double. Had king size for years but moved house two years ago and while a king would have fitted in the room it wouldn't have given us much space so we went with double. I'm 5 10, DH is 6 1. No problems at all, I quite like it to be honest. We had a super king on holidays recently and I honestly found it too big.

BruFord · 16/10/2025 16:36

@SwarmsofLadybirds I don’t think so, we used to have a double and this is def. bigger. Requires a larger size mattress cover and sheets.

We’re in the US so perhaps it’s different?

LittleArithmetics · 16/10/2025 16:37

Standard double here, two slim/medium height adults, no issues.

Isn't a queen a small double?

US queen bed size is similar to a UK King size?

lovemelongtime · 16/10/2025 16:38

Absolutely no way. When we go away self catering we only book somewhere with 2 bedrooms, even if it means me in a kids single

Harrysmummy246 · 16/10/2025 16:39

yyes, because there really isn't space for anything else in our room. We have loads of space downstairs but three just double bedrooms upstairs

tragichero · 16/10/2025 16:39

I shared a king size with my ex for the last few years but when I bought my own place about a year ago I could only take the furniture that I had bought, so I now use my daughter's old double, and she bless her is in a single (all that will comfortably fit in her new room).

Ex came over a few times before we fully split and I have to say that sharing the double was Hell with him - he is a pretty big guy - and a couple of times I even ended up going to sleep in daughter's room as she was away at the time.

Now my FWB is occasionally stays over and I was a bit nervous about how it would be - kept putting him off from spending the night actually - but turns out it's fine! We are both fairly small people and quite compact sleepers, if that makes sense! So it doesn't feel small at all - in fact in a king size I think he would feel a bit too far away!

So I think it depends on both size and sleeping habits really.... How much you move about, spread your arms out etc.

This thread is like the famous mumsnet chicken threads. 15 of us sleep in our double bed with enough room left over for the neighbours too.

Ddakji · 16/10/2025 16:40

3 bed terrace here - we have a king size. We’re both small but I like that I can curl up and move around as I like and not touch DH (who sleeps like a corpse).

Sunflower101 · 16/10/2025 16:40

We have a double bed, it feels such a lovely luxury when we are away and have a larger bed. I’d find it hard to have a really large bed at home and then sleep in a double. Prefer my current arrangement.

EveningSpread · 16/10/2025 16:41

We do. Sometimes have our little one in too.

We’re both fairly slim but DP is over 6 foot and his feet hang over the bottom if he stretches out.

I’m up for a king size but he says it’s a waste of money!

We have a standard double. It's fine.
I don't think I've ever had a house big enough for king sized beds and all furniture to fit properly.

Ditto. Fortunately neither of us are very big. Good job really, we really couldn't get a king size bed in our house!

I do like bigger beds when we are away though.

Myamoth · 16/10/2025 16:42

We have a standard double, we're both fairly big people, we don't have a problem with it. Perhaps it's sleeping positions? We both sleep on our sides, I can imagine if two people liked to starfish it might be a bigger problem. We had a Queen sized bed in a hotel once, we didn't like it, felt like we were sleeping in different postcodes 😁

TheLurpackYears · 16/10/2025 16:42

If you’re both under weight maybe try thicker pjs so your bones aren’t jangling together? When I was skinny and had skinny boyfriends we’d sometimes bruise each other. No risk of that now though.

Safirexx · 16/10/2025 16:43

We do. It's cosy when we want it to be but there's also plenty of space for us to have separate sides quite comfortably. And we aren't small people lol. Sometimes our youngest dc squeezes in with us, which is quite tight but still just about manageable.

Somebody hasn't had their weetabix this morning, I was joking, banter on your coding in a bed (also jokey) comment.

Full English breakfast on Thursdays for me, thanks. It was delicious 😋 I don’t like cereal, jokey or otherwise

Of course people sleep in a standard double!!!
I don't know any couples who don't !!!

I don't know any who do.

I like enough personal space to sleep. I can't bear being cuddled or touched when I am trying to sleep, and DH is the same.

We are both tall as well, so a standard double is too short for DH. And beds with footboards are a complete no-no. DH recently spent several weeks in hospital, and when the top of the bed was raise he had to sit with his knees bent.

stargirl1701 · 16/10/2025 16:46

No. We have a Superking.

BaconCheeses · 16/10/2025 16:50

Didimum · 16/10/2025 16:21

Yep – slept in all kids of huge beds at family houses, hotels and holiday rentals. I don't find any difference in comfort or sleep, so see no need for one. I find it very strange how people can't compute that people simply feel differently about some things.

Then consider me corrected! I just love my huge bed 🤣

Were they not hoping/fighting for a better world?

One where people could sleep in any kind of bed they wanted.

Isn't a queen a small double?

No, not in North America at least. I'm in Canada and my queen size bed is the same size as our king size bed was back in the UK. Our spare room here has a king size bed and it's way wider than our UK king was.

In answer to the OP's question, I am sure we'd be fine with a standard double if that was what we were used to, but I'd struggle now that we're used to having the extra space.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/10/2025 16:51

OH and I shared a single bed for the first couple of years of our relationship, then a double for the next 15. After that we moved to a large house with a huge bedroom and got ourselves a Superking. Doubles on holiday feel much too small now! I like plenty of space and have a tendency to overheat. The dog also sleeps in between the two of us so the Superking is great and it doesn’t dominate the room as it’s such a big room.

Sunflowermoonbeam · 16/10/2025 16:51

Standard double here. Husband and I are medium size, well I'm on the more cuddly size. Share it with at least one moggy and our 6 year old from 7am. Plenty of room, i don't like to touch when actually asleep and it is never an issue, there is always a big gap between us as we are side sleepers. We have room for a bigger bed but don't see the point as we have loads of space and do actually want to be next to each other, we married each other after all!
