Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We have a super kingsize at home and now find a double impossible. We are average sized people but I often put it down to my husband's snoring. It's much easier to cope with when I can be pretty far away from him. A king-size is doable but a double is just misery for us now

Mydogandme · 18/10/2025 19:18

Stop moaning plenty of people out there that don't have one be grateful you have a nice warm bed

Aloha2024 · 18/10/2025 19:19

Haha never, that’s not even my son’s bed size. My partner sleeps on our super king bed and I sleep in my own comfy king size futton.
I can’t imagine getting so close to someone when sleeping :)

Muffinmam · 18/10/2025 19:25

I have a queen bed and my partner has a king. The only time I’ve slept in a double bed was when I stayed at my sisters mouse and it was so uncomfortable!

I was very small back then and I felt the bed was too small for me.

When we stay at hotels we book rooms with two queen beds so we can have space.

Fofftwenty21 · 18/10/2025 19:29

Yes we have a double bed and its fine. Probably just more that you aren't used to it.

How many people sleep in the same bed with their partner regularly!? Our marriage isn’t great but we also like having our own space at night and kinda always have! Feel like it’s a taboo subject that people don’t want to admit, or is it just me!?

For the past few years dh and I have had separate rooms, each with at least a king. I would certainly not have liked the idea when younger, but we’d started disturbing each other, up and down in the night to wee - plus I just don’t sleep well any more, so tend to be up and down anyway, or else reading for ages.
IMO if it suits you both, it’s fine, and not anybody else’s business.

PrettyPickle · 18/10/2025 19:47

We are both chunky monkeys and sleep in a standard double and its fine. I find that in a Kingsize, my husband wraps himself up like a burrito as there is room to roll and then I freeze - but no room to roll in our standard double, its cosy!

RazorsAtDawn · 18/10/2025 19:49

Standard double here. Our bedroom is boarderline too small for a king. Our house is on the market and the stipulation of what we buy next is the master bedroom has to be big enough for a superking. The further away my husband is during the sleeping hours the better, and during the waking hours more room to roll about in the better 😆

greglet · 18/10/2025 19:50

DH and I have a king size and even that is too small now I’m 20 weeks pregnant - I’ve been sleeping in the spare room! We’re both tall, which I’m sure makes a difference, and neither of us can bear any kind of physical contact when we’re trying to sleep.

We always have separate rooms when we stay at my PILs’, because the main spare bed is only a standard double and we just can’t hack it. I’m sure MIL thinks I’m a terrible princess, but I don’t cope well with insufficient or poor quality sleep so it’s not something I can compromise on.

First world problems, eh? 🙄

It depends. If I want to stretch out, DP has to manage with what space I leave him, so a standard double works. However if he wants to stretch out, I make him sleep on the floor. So I find a double standard works better.

NameChangedForThis2025 · 18/10/2025 20:03

We’ve recently upgraded our king to a super king with zip link mattresses and separate double duvets. Any future house moves will need to accommodate the bed!

As someone suffering with perimenopausal sleep disturbances plus a 3 year old who likes to get into bed with us in the wee hours, I will very happily admit I’m totally precious about bed size and comfort.

Sleeping in the double bed when visiting the in-laws was awful, even when we were only used to a king size!

Peachykween · 18/10/2025 20:10

Yes, but we are two average sized women. Moving house soon and I'm investing in a bigger bed! Current one is fine for us, but I'd like a bit more space.

ImplodingLoading · 18/10/2025 20:36

I literally do not understand how anyone fits into a standard double!
I'm 5ft 4 and 8 stone, my husband is 6ft 4 and 18 stone (not fat, just really muscular), and in a double he has to lie diagonally to fit, giving me no space to stretch out!
We have a Super King, but I'd actually like a bigger bed as he takes up so much space!

Coco1379 · 18/10/2025 20:44

Yes we do (and the cat who stretches to his fullest extent) But we follow the Scandi practice of having individual single duvets.

BananaBreadIsGross · 18/10/2025 20:45

I’m absolutely amazed by the amount of people that seem unable to sleep in a standard double bed. We’ve always had a double and always shared a bed. When I was pregnant it was fine, when our kids were little and both jumped in bed with us, it was a squeeze, but fine. Neither of the kids feel the need to get in bed with us any more and we have plenty of room, barely even touch. It’s the starfishing dog that gets in the way and he gets shoved back into his bed 🤣.

Offloadontome · 18/10/2025 20:47

I'm a wriggler and I absolutely hate sleeping on anything but our super king! I can do a king size on holiday, but a standard double is awful and I feel really cramped. DH is over 6 foot too, and snores. So the further away I can be from him the better sleep I get 😂

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 18/10/2025 20:48

I have real problems on holiday. I can’t sleep in a double bed - every movement wakes me up. Even kings can be crap if the mattresses aren’t really good non-roll ones. We’ve started booking twin rooms with two single beds if there’s no super king option. It’s very limiting but it’s better than not sleeping!

idril · 18/10/2025 20:55

First six months of being together we could share a single.

Next 5 years or ao we shared a standard double.

Next 5 years we shared a kingsize but could cope with a double on holiday.

Next 5 years we shared a suoer king size at home but could cope with a king on holiday but not a double.

Now we share zip lock beds and when we go away we book twin beds 😂. Neither of us sleep well when sharing a mattress. My husband is 40kg heavier than me and he fidgits. When he moves, it wakes me up and he worries about waking me up so feels like he can’t move.

Can’t be doing with a bad night sleep.

Maybe I’m just a super heavy sleeper. My husband is 35kg heavier than me and I definitely don’t wake up from him moving. I can see it being a pain if you woke up every time your partner moved!

Star2004k · 18/10/2025 21:03

We do, along with our 5 year old and 19 month year old…we are very slim and also sleep quite still.

MNLurker1345 · 18/10/2025 21:10

It obviously does work because a lot of
people in the UK do sleep comfortably in standard doubles. It’s cosy!

We have a super king sized, I absolutely love it,
so much space. But it is ultimately about the size of your bedroom isn’t it?

QOFfE · 18/10/2025 21:41

Wow! First world problems! Whatever size bed you have, you get used to it, surely?!

shine18 · 18/10/2025 21:59

Oh OP. I’m with you. Double is so hard if you need to move which is normal especially as you get older. UK holidays can be disappointing for this reason

MotherPuppr · 18/10/2025 22:11

I think queen size is perfect. Would struggle to go back to a double now. Never have had a room big enough for a king but unless the room 'needed' a king I'm not sure I would bother?
