Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

They were all smaller than us - which is where the problem lies!

Mine weren’t, my mum was the same height as me so was my paternal grandma. My bloke and my dad were exactly the same height. I can’t use a bath sheet, it’s just too big.

Superking bed at home, always book at least a kingsized bed when on holiday. Surely its just what you're used to?!

redluckycat · 18/10/2025 08:25

We have a standard double and my husband is 6’6”!

That's interesting. So the beds here were always smaller? My GPs always had a proper double 180 cm and proper single, but that wasn't in uk. The double sells there as 1.5.
It's quite interesting the differences in simple things!

Houses are smaller in the UK than many countries, including the US- this accounts for smaller furniture.

A standard double is the norm in the UK.

But they didn't use to be, did they. I lived in few very old houses and the bedrooms were often massive. Including bog standard victorian terrace.
It is getting smaller everywhere though. The new developments where my family lives are much smaller than older houses. To great annoyance of everyone.

We viewed lots of houses not so long ago and were so surprised at how small some 90s builds were here. But at the same time we lived in 1990s apartment building before and the apartment was giant compared to many. Would easily fit super king and furniture in both bedrooms. I think it was council build or something, meant for families.

Sorry took that away from beds 🙈

In the late 90s my friend and colleague's second property together with then husband was a detached house with bedrooms said by her not to be big enough to be a home intended for a family, just for a couple. I could see what she meant when I visited but I'd not be surprised in this era of house prices if a family of 4 were in there now.

Our Victorian semi has one huge bedroom, a double and a single. I've not been tempted to go for king size bed as yet

Jayne35 · 18/10/2025 13:33

We had a standard double for years then moved and had a bigger room so got a king, much better, hate having to sleep in smaller bed now, though we do share ours with the dog at home, and I still get pushed to the edge. Looked at super king but would have had to lose a bedside table.

Queenchewchew · 18/10/2025 14:06

Dh and I sleep comfortably in a double with two small dogs but we’re both (or all if you include the dogs) quite clingy sleepers which is what really makes the difference I think.

It does get a bit squished if our toddler comes into the bed with us but not unmanageably so

neighboursmustliveon · 18/10/2025 15:33

We only have a double. There isn’t room in our bedroom for anything bigger. We manage fine and in face when we get home from a holiday and have a king or bigger my husband does always give me a cuddle and says he misses me as he feels I’m so far away when we sleep. We are both plus sized too.

Lbet · 18/10/2025 18:17

Don’t matter to me I’m not fussed thankfully.

dh280125 · 18/10/2025 18:19

It's just about what you are used to. I have a superking now and really do notice when we are in places with a regular double, but for many years I just had a double and it was fine at the time.

Toddlertamer1 · 18/10/2025 18:37

Not at home but we do ok when visiting in laws in double bed with 1 year old and DH. Often 3yo gets in too 🤣

JustSawJohnny · 18/10/2025 18:39

I can't with doubles unless sleeping alone. DP snores like a train and I want to be as far away as possible!

Superking for the win.

Imagine if our grandparents and great grandparents who lived through world wars and sheltered underground at night as they were bombed could read this thread.

First time on mumsnet?

PistachioTiramisu · 18/10/2025 18:43

It's funny but I don't know how anybody can bear to have someone touching or breathing on them when they are trying to sleep!

We have a standard double, it's fine. 30 grass ago we slept ok together in a single but we have both put on a few lb since then...

It's just what you are used to. We do have a king size duvet to avoid fighting though!

This is exactly our scenario too! We have a standard double with a king size duvet, still fight over the duvet. When we sleep in the campervan it's a small size double, I can't do more than a few nights on it, but it's ok for a long weekend. We used to share a single when I was at uni! I'm on the larger side too.

Jayblue141 · 18/10/2025 18:47

Your comfort level is always based upon what you're used to.
Me and the other half have a standard double and we don't have any issues, I think the right mattress helps though, we have one where the movement of one doesn't affect the other, we also have king size duvet to give us extra coverage.

hugbilly · 18/10/2025 18:47

We did for many years and our twins regularly joined us when they were young infants; it was fine . . .

Lalalalalalalalalalaoohoohwee · 18/10/2025 18:57

Tell me you're a snob without saying your a snob

Contraversialcatergory · 18/10/2025 19:00

How many people sleep in the same bed with their partner regularly!? Our marriage isn’t great but we also like having our own space at night and kinda always have! Feel like it’s a taboo subject that people don’t want to admit, or is it just me!?

My husband and I sleep in a standard double, we'd struggle to fit a larger bed in the bedroom. My son and his fiancée have a small double. It is possible to sleep like this all the time.

Bobbinette · 18/10/2025 19:07

Yes we have a standard double. We also have two cats. One sleeps at the bottom, the other at the top and it’s perfect, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/10/2025 19:13

When a lot younger, I could share even the small double at my DM’s with dh, but now I need at least a king to share. If a hotel doesn’t have one, we can manage with a twin room.
At home I have a king size all to myself!

A pet peeve is AirBnB or any other holiday home owners, who are too bloody stingy to provide KS beds when there’s ample room for them.

Mydogandme · 18/10/2025 19:13

Me and my other half have slept in a double bed for years not a problem plenty of room stop moaning and be grateful you've got one plenty of people out there that don't
