Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Always sleep in a standard double, and sometimes in a single when we visit relatives. No probs, just cuddle up.
Seems very princess if you ask me, we would even get a super king-size in our bedroom

With you op!

Each to their own I suppose, but we have evolved into only liking a super king size bed size.

If we are staying away we always look for a super king size bed and often have to ring the hotel to check as they don’t specify on many sites.

Just can’t get comfy even in a king size as we are used to having our own space and being able to move left or right when needed. I move a lot during the night from left to right side but I don’t want to touch anyone and get too hot.

If we are staying somewhere that doesn’t have a super king bed I would always book a family room so we could have separate beds if needed LOL!

I’m sure we could get used to it the other way again, but it would take weeks or months to undo our preference and adjust.

Completely understand where you are coming from op, I suppose it’s just what we get used to. Once you’ve tried a super King you don’t go back lol! Or at least, you don’t like to. Even our guest room has a super king which everyone says is luxury.

I’ve always wanted to upgrade to an Emperor bed, but we do not have the space for those unfortunately.

We’ve got a super king size bed and oh my god I feel so spoiled!! I love it so much

Tell me you're a snob without saying your a snob

I don’t think I am being snobby. We usually camp, and I’ve had to fashion a bed on the floor this week which is far more comfortable than the two of us in the standard double. We got a super king years ago as our kids never slept in their own beds - sleeping in ours every night - and it made sense. If now sadly appears there is no going back.

So you used to sleep in a double but still had to ask if others do?! Of course they do. A lot of people can't afford a house with bedrooms that will fit a bed bigger than a standard double.

Are you from "Honey I shrunk the kids adults?"

🤣

TerrysNeapolitan · 18/10/2025 23:23

We have a standard double at my house (King duvet on it though as he steals it) then a King at his (25 year relationship with both places all the time) Double always seems small on first night then we get back used to it very quickly and don't think twice about it.

Yes we have a standard double, dh is extremely tall, and we usually have our three year old in the middle with us too at some point in the night.
It’s fine.

You’re my kind of person! I’m in a thruple. We’re all extremely tall but the three of us manage fine in a standard double (with bed boards at either end for extra cosiness) even when our Doberman dog decides to hop on too.

I also only put the heating on when it’s -10c outside and make a small chicken last a fortnight in a family of 8.

Seriously, I’d bet you good money that you only think extra tall DH is ok in a standard double that you share with your 3yo because he’s not the complaining type…

Dangitydang · 17/10/2025 06:16

I find it so peculiar that Brits have somehow managed to build as standard for last 100 years houses which cannot really fit actual 180cm double bed if I am honest.

A double room can fit a king size bed fine, even in a small house. It’s that some people prefer to have chunky bedroom furniture which prevents a bed that’s only six inches wider from fitting in.

If you have a room that literally can’t fit a king size bed in, it’s a single room!

When l’m sleeping with someone, l want to feel their warmth and snuggle up to them.

Imagine if our grandparents and great grandparents who lived through world wars and sheltered underground at night as they were bombed could read this thread.

You could probably say that about must of the posts on here tbf. Not really relevant or helpful.

Howszaboutthat · 19/10/2025 08:25

I’m with the OP.

We’re tall, and I’m menopausal. Need anymore be said?

Tbh I would ban those stupid four poster beds and those beds with a footboard type thing (cracked toe, anyone?).

Howszaboutthat · 19/10/2025 08:27

Mydogandme · 18/10/2025 19:18

Stop moaning plenty of people out there that don't have one be grateful you have a nice warm bed

Oh my days. Heaven forbid a woman should have a good night’s sleep.

In our case it's my DH because I am rotating like windmill in a storm 🙈

Jazzcatt · 19/10/2025 09:26

We sleep in separate rooms! Due to snoring. Best thing we've ever done for our relationship.

Ilovesunandsnow · 19/10/2025 10:28

I have a superking and I’m considering downsizing to a kingsize simply because it takes forever changing the bedding, not to mention how much more expensive bedding is for superking. But I’d never go smaller than a kingsize as a double is simply too small for two normal sized adults to stretch out in properly.

whitewine25 · 19/10/2025 10:29

no way, we have a super king , standard double way too small

MischkasMum · 19/10/2025 10:45

Princessy? Yes, a bit. Not everyone has the space for a king-size bed never mind a SUPER KS! My husband and I have always slept in a double bed BUT we have an extremely good memory foam mattress. I think that makes all the difference.

I've got one of those king size beds that doesn't have a metal fence down the middle. I can show you where to get them if you like?

SleepingStandingUp · 19/10/2025 10:55

We have a standard double. DH is over 6ft and I'm fat. We both sleep fine, I like being able to roll over and touch him in the night

agree, a standard double good for 1 person, my kids al have doubles and i would not chnage from a super king now

Fuzzyhippo · 19/10/2025 11:23

We have a small double. However I had to get my own bed in the spare after toddler decided he wanted to sleep with dad as there wasn't enough room. Can't complain. Best sleep I've had in years 😂

SarzWix · 19/10/2025 15:36

Yes, we sleep in a standard double together, have done for 33 years now. I'm a size 24 and he's a Large, and sometimes there's a dog on there too 🤷🏼‍♀️
It might not be a 'princessy' attitude, but you are kinda privileged, even to be able to afford the huge bed let alone the space to put it in.
