On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We have a super king and on holiday if it’s not super king on offer we have a single each. Can’t have anyone breathing on me.

mustwashmycurtains · 16/10/2025 22:50

I sleep in a super king….by myself 😬 (I won it in the divorce)

I can sleep in any size bed solo, but hate sharing a double. If it’s hot I do not want anyone touching me in the slightest. And if it’s cold I have a heated blanket under the bottom sheet, preferable to another human

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/10/2025 22:55

Most friends and myself sleep in a a king

it may only be six inches bigger then a double but we all know 6 inches is amazing 😂😂

Lionfisher · 16/10/2025 22:57

Just bought 13yo a king … it will be spare bed in ten years time and no way can I see how ppl sleep happily on a double. We have superking.. and still quite often end up in different rooms anyway because one of us is night owl and the other early bird.

localnotail · 16/10/2025 22:57

I don't think the bed is an issue. I slept very comfortably in a single bed with someone I loved being with, and I hated sleeping in a super king size bed with my ex as I hated him touching me even a tiny bit.

I can't understand how you would chose floor over bed (any bed). You must be quite hardy.

LaDamaDeElche · 16/10/2025 22:58

We don’t and most people who I know well enough to have seen their bedrooms don’t. When we stay at our parents houses in the guest rooms we do and it’s really uncomfortable. I’m small and fairly slim and I find it harder to tolerate than my partner who is six foot.. It totally depends on how you sleep comfortably. I need my space or I can’t sleep!!

If I’m really honest I hate sharing any bed. But I’d rarely say it out loud!

We have a knackered Super king. DH is very overweight and a very restless sleeper. If we stay somewhere with a double then we top to tail.
A double is smaller than two singles (who on earth thought that was a good idea).

Thewhywhybird · 16/10/2025 23:02

Yes we do, it's fine

ReadingSoManyThreads · 16/10/2025 23:04

We do, plus bedshared for years with a child in with us too. I'm overweight (obese really), DH normal weight. DH & I used to share a single bed when he stayed with me on weekends back in our dating days!

That said, when we next redecorate our room, I was going to buy a bigger bed, but we certainly cope fine in the standard double.

We did have an issue with duvet hogging though, but we resolved this by using a king size duvet.

We’ve had a standard double for 30 years. So do many people because they can’t afford the space for bigger and so, yes, declaring you must have a larger bed is more than a bit prlncess like.

Some people have a 28 inch Tv. Could you watch tv on that or do you have a bigger one because you’re use to it? Imagine someone calling you princess like for that. Relax. The OP was just asking a question.

Sunrisewatcher · 16/10/2025 23:06

My DP has a Super King (7x7) at his place which is great and so comfortable. I only have a standard double which he refers to as the cot and says I'm trespassing when cuddling up to him 😅

Crazycatladywithnocats · 16/10/2025 23:09

Double bed sleeper here. The bedroom is far too small to accommodate a king sized bed so we have to slum it in a good old double.

MajorMerrick · 16/10/2025 23:10

We do. DH is 6’2” and I’m 5’7”, so not small. DH likes his feet hanging off the bed and kind size beds are too long. I’ve always been happy enough. We don’t roll together or fall off the edges. I do have a great mattress and fabulous bedding, to make up for it.

Imbusytodaysorry · 16/10/2025 23:12

@Shamrockshirley 5”4 I sleep alone in a king size .
I can’t share a double .

Denim4ever · 16/10/2025 23:15

Always have, never been a problem even though we are both tall.

Autumvibes · 16/10/2025 23:19

When I first started dating dh we slept in a single bed together most nights. Double no problem but I do prefer king size plus for extra moving room.

Swiftie1878 · 16/10/2025 23:20

shuggles · 16/10/2025 19:39

How is that even possible? My fat ass has loads of room in a standard double.

I’m quite short and not overweight, but like to spread out. We have a super king, and tbh I wish it was bigger.

Swiftie1878 · 16/10/2025 23:21

nosleepforme · 16/10/2025 19:03

That’s hilarious! So you’d not like a single bed then…

Er, no!! 😂😂

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 16/10/2025 23:22

Double and it's fine. But we spent a number of years in a single then a three quarter, so a double seemed like loads of space after that.

awkwardasfuck · 16/10/2025 23:41

Yeah but im 5'4 and a bit pint sized and he's 6 foot and slim
rarely encroach on each other

the cat however if he sneaks in can monopolise 90%

cherish123 · 16/10/2025 23:47

We sleep in a double. It's fine for us (and sometimes a child) but we are both slim. A lot of people are overweight nowadays. We have quite a large bedroom buy I don't see how it would fit a king size.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/10/2025 00:06

My parents did for 30 years

RisingSunn · 17/10/2025 00:07

I think once you’ve got used to a King size - you really feel it when you’re on a double.

PeacefulHouse · 17/10/2025 00:08

Me (a UK size 18) and my husband (6ft tall XL in clothes) have always had double beds and have never struggled

Having read most pps I'm now convinced it's not fitting into the bed that's the problem for some of us. Very likely we'd all manage for both partners to 'fit in it'

Dh and I easily fit into a 4ft 6in double but it's the night that follows that makes it impossible to stay comfortable all night. I don't keep still for long, turn over lots of times - he snores, fairly quietly, but if his mouth is near my ear it soon wakes me.
It's all very well snuggling up but within 10 minutes we're both boiling hot and each have a leg sticking out of the bed. In a bigger bed you can just move your legs to a cooler part. In a standard double there's no room for that manoeuvre and we sometimes even end up stuck to each other. Both are up a couple of times in the night for one reason or another, and in a 4ft 6in bed it's hard not to disturb the other. We've now had a Superking for many years, and chose to have two single mattresses on the 6ft base so that if either of us is restless or gets up, the other mattress doesn't move. You can shift your legs around for coolness or comfort as far as you like. It's bloody marvellous.
I would never, ever book a hotel with a standard double because it would feel like a massive inconvenience now we're used to having the space we need.
