Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We sleep in a standard double and it's fine. We chose it because it was important for us to have enough bedroom space for a full size cot, as we wanted to have our dcs in with us for as long as they needed.

User565635 · 17/10/2025 01:57

Hell no. Got a super king when the kids were born so that they could sleep with us, now DH is in the spare room as it got too crowded. I could not share a bed with a man ever again, love my own space, and yes our relationship is great for all the misery guts out there!

A single is like 3ft wide and a double only 1.5ft wider so can't see how 2 people coild comfortably sleep in a standard double

A lking sized is only 6 inches wider than a double so I can't see how it actually makes that much difference tbh

We have a standard double but don’t suffer feom rolling or clinging as you described

we are both quite slim /light which might make a difference and also have a decent mattress - because of my habit of rolling out of bed we need one that keeps some shape or I end up bruised

Meant genuinely - surely you’d roll out of bed less if you bed was bigger?

Dangitydang · 17/10/2025 06:16

I find it so peculiar that Brits have somehow managed to build as standard for last 100 years houses which cannot really fit actual 180cm double bed if I am honest.

jeaux90 · 17/10/2025 06:30

God no. Superking only. Stayed at a fantastic AirBNb recently but we won’t go back as the beds were too small.

MovingBird123 · 17/10/2025 07:07

We're in a double, house too small for something bigger. It's fine, but I'd upgrade when we have the space. At least every time we go on holiday it's another layer of total luxury to sleep in a massive bed...

Jan24680 · 17/10/2025 07:14

Absolutely fine, actually there is usually 1/3 bed empty on his side. He's only just short enough to be comfortable in a double though and my toes reach the end.

Loobyloot · 17/10/2025 07:39

Yes, we have a super king as both super tall. Holidays are torture.

We've just moved house into somewhere with a much much smaller bedroom though and now our super is up against the wall and I have to climb in and out via the foot. I still wouldn't give it up though, the thought of being closer to another body after all these years!

That's quite an extreme statement unless you are joking

I agree what a silly biased thing to say!
mum 5 feet 2 inch and I would fight to death to keep my super king size bed if the bailiffs came !

Easterchicken · 17/10/2025 08:16

We do and I'm a bit on the large size
We sometimes have a kid in here too it's not too small especially with only two of us

Rituelec · 17/10/2025 09:31

On holiday atm with a double. Its hideous. We have super king at home.

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 17/10/2025 09:44

Wow people are defensive on here, no-one needs to defend sleeping in a double or a superking, you have whatever you want or your room allows! We have a superking at home and love it. Neither of us like being in contact when asleep as I am like a furnace and it’s not comfortable for either of us being in contact, so bigger is better for us. We make sure we have a king size as a minimum when travelling otherwise I book twin beds.

Sartre · 17/10/2025 10:06

Yep we always have and it’s fine. Massive squash when 5yo DS sometimes gets in but other than that it’s no issue.

BaconCheeses · 16/10/2025 16:13

So you've slept in a superking for a week, have space for one, and wouldn't choose a bigger bed?

Is that right?

I’ve slept in super-king beds many times on holidays, and these days we do have space for one, but am honestly just as happy in an ordinary double. From a comfort point of view, I really don’t care either way and neither does DP. We both sleep just as well in a double as we do in a super-king - regardless of bed size, DP always falls asleep the moment his head hits the pillow and I always take forever to doze off. This is also the case when we spend nights alone.

Maybe it depends what sort of sleeper you are? We both sleep on our sides and neither of us is the type of sleeper who falls asleep with arms and legs flung out across the mattress.

Wewalkthewalk · 17/10/2025 10:43

We have a standard double, even though we have a big bedroom. We’re both short (5’4) and slim, and have a good firm mattress, and there’s plenty of room. I find it really weird if we go somewhere with a King or bigger - it feels like I’m miles away from my husband!

Atina321 · 17/10/2025 12:16

We have a king but manage fine with a double when we are away as long as the mattress is good.

I think it is wobbly bed frames and low quality mattresses that spoil a break away for me. Wobbly bed frames means everyone one of us moves it is like being at sea for the other!

Legomania · 17/10/2025 12:38

LittleLeggs · 16/10/2025 21:44

Yup standard double for the two of us. It's called standard for a reason. Unless you're much larger/taller than the average person, or have specific physical impediments, it's ridiculous to demand more than the "standard"

Ridiculous?! 🤣

Bed sizes were standardised when people's frames were a lot smaller. See also: parking spaces

Before you ask, I am 5'7" and around nine stone

Dangitydang · 17/10/2025 12:57

I still want to know who decided that 1.5 size will be a standard, let alone called a "standard double" when it's not a double🙈 How did that happen

GreyCloudsLooming · 17/10/2025 14:03

I understand that what is now called “small double” used to be the normal double that everyone had - certainly both my parents and grandparents had “small doubles”. The standard double was invented to give more space, but that was originally an extra-large double. Likewise, a “single” bed when I was young was only two foot six. Now it’s called a small single, but it didn’t used to be.

Babybaby2025 · 17/10/2025 14:13

Last hotel we stayed at was a standard double, I prefer a bigger bed but both found it fine, though I'm a very still sleeper and my husband can sleep anywhere

Newname71 · 17/10/2025 14:17

We have a king size but I’d swap to a super king in a heartbeat but I’d have to replace all my bedding so…..

shhblackbag · 17/10/2025 15:22

I have a superking mattress, so the big sheets, but two single duvets because the duvet covers were unmanageable to change. Works well.

envbeckyc · 17/10/2025 18:08

My husband and I have a standard double bed! We started dating before university and were lucky enough to live together through our student years sharing a standard ikea sized double bed. (Not small double)

We go to sleep cuddling each other at night, which feels lovely.

We sleep terribly on holiday when we have a king or super kingsize bed!

We have been a couple for 29 years… and wouldn’t entertain the idea of a larger bed!

Apparently when you couple you release oxytocin which makes you feel good! Perhaps that’s the secret to our happy marriage?

rainbowunicorn22 · 17/10/2025 18:10

Our bedroom is so damn small that we can only have a standard double; even then, it means climbing over sometimes to get around. I wish that we could have the biggest bed going a superking would be great
