On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We only upgraded to a king size in the past couple of years. Being in a double didn't bother us at all for the first 20+ years of our relationship, but if we ever sleep in a double now, I feel very claustrophobic indeed.

Timeforabitofpeace · 16/10/2025 21:58

We downgraded to a king from a superking. I regret it.

We love coming home from holidays and cosying up again in our double bed.

Anytime we have a row, our bodies have made it up over night and we’re all cuddled up by morning, and whatever the disagreement was is long forgotten. Pretty sure we’d be divorced several times over if we had a bigger bed.

LittleArithmetics · 16/10/2025 21:59

I find it amazing that so many people have space for extra wide beds. All the rooms I've had would only have fit a double, at least without detriment to the other furnishings or proportions of the room. And when I look on rightmove I generally see similar sized rooms.

Rhond24 · 16/10/2025 21:59

You must all have bigger bedrooms than me! If I had a kingsize in my ordinary Victorian terrace there would be no space either side to get in and out, let alone open the wardrobe!
Plus I do have a rather lovely Edwardian bedstead and they don't tend to come in the huge sizes becuse they weren't the norm back then.
I admit do enjoy a kingsize bed when we go on holiday but I think day to day, you can sleep in whatever you're used to sleeping in.

I have a superking at home DP has a double (awkward shaped room that wouldn’t take a bigger bed) I was horrified the first time I stayed over but I actually get a great sleep at his. We’re not cuddly sleepers either we just manage to find our space.

We have a standard double. It's fine.
I don't think I've ever had a house big enough for king sized beds and all furniture to fit properly.

Same here. Anything bigger would take up our whole bedroom! My husband and I are both on the smallish side I guess but not unusually so and it’s completely fine.
we both had single beds growing up though (as do our kids), I can see how if you grew up with a double bed to yourself it might seem small to share one.

Lovingthelighterevenings · 16/10/2025 22:04

Double bed here. No bedside table as that's now an up down desk. I don't think I'll can afford a house that would have the space for supper king bed.

Butchyrestingface · 16/10/2025 22:06

I slept in a single bed ‘til I was 31. Now sleep in a queen.

AMA.

SwirlingAroundSleep · 16/10/2025 22:06

Yep and my other half is very tall. Even got the baby in with us when I was breast feeding with a bumper pillow to ensure he didn’t fall out. Admittedly, that was a bit of a squeeze but we stayed in a hotel with a super king bed recently and hated it as we felt so far apart. Our bedroom is definitely big enough for a super king but we much prefer our double and a cuddle.

Cowprintplease · 16/10/2025 22:08

You're being ridiculous. My husband is 6 foot 3 and we have no issue with a double bed.

Ordinary Victorian 3 bed terrace here - the main bedroom is the whole width of the house so plenty of room for a kingsize bed. I grew up in a 1920s house and that had 2 big bedrooms that could take king sized beds as well (and 2 box rooms).

BaileyHorse · 16/10/2025 22:11

King size this end too! Replaced the double when pregnant first time round and never went back. A double feels v small now

HeNeedsRehab · 16/10/2025 22:11

Superking here.

I do discount holiday lets with a double, we just don’t sleep well that close together 😂.

DH is a light/poor sleeper but in a superking you can basically sleep however you want without disturbing the other. Also hes about 4000 degrees all year round so we don’t sleep cuddled together anyway.

We’ve made sacrifices in previous homes to fit a king size at the expense of a proper bedside table for example.

Cowprintplease · 16/10/2025 22:16

I'm baffled by the people saying a double is close together, you still have your own sides...

But in a superking we have about a foot between us when we are on our own sides.

In a double we breathe on each other 😂

Sub2Mumma · 16/10/2025 22:19

kingsize here - seriously considering a super king but don’t think I could cope with the bedding! DH is 6ft4 and very wiggly and snory in his sleep. Double bed is hell!!

sesquipedalian · 16/10/2025 22:28

We sleep in a standard double - always cuddle up to DH in bed. We had a super king in a hotel once and it was like sleeping in a field - we didn’t like it at all! Each to their own.

Labraradabrador · 16/10/2025 22:29

You share a bed? We’ve moved on to separate beds entirely and never slept better. Highly recommend.

Pomegranatecarnage · 16/10/2025 22:29

I have a standard double-it’s never been a problem.

Bonbon249 · 16/10/2025 22:37

Would it be possible for you to push the twin beds together and sleep in them? I'm wondering if your problem arise from either a mattress that is not in the best shape and needs to be replaced or it's not actually a standard double but a small double (what my mum used to call a three quarter bed).

OutOfDateTreacle · 16/10/2025 22:39

We’re the same as you, OP. I won’t book a villa/ Airbnb now that has a
double’ bed. King size is my absolute minimum.

WaltzingWaters · 16/10/2025 22:43

Yes we have a standard double and we both much prefer it to a bigger bed. We always say we end up at opposite ends of the bed when we’re in a bigger bed. We’re both quite slim though.

Wincher · 16/10/2025 22:43

We have a kingsize - DH struggles in a double due to length, they are shorter. Recently moved to a new house where we have room for a super king, and our mattress is elderly so we need a new one anyway, but sadly they aren’t any longer than king size! But wider will be nice.

Zoono · 16/10/2025 22:46

It wasn't ideal at at all but for 3 years , I shared a single bed with my then partner who was 6 foot 3. I was overweight and it obviously wasn't ideal , so at that time a double bed would've been a luxury. We were both in our mid twenties and that was only 5 years ago. You sound out of touch and unreasonable.
