Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We had a standard double on holiday this year and then the bloody dog piled in as well. I retreated to the sofa! Definitely need a king imo, but I like to not be touching anything as I sleep and ideally for the duvet to be tucked around me on both sides.

Girlwithabook · 16/10/2025 21:17

Currently on holiday in the Balkan Peninsula and we are completely spoilt with a bed 200 cm wide - bigger than a super-king and nearly 50 cm bigger than our king-size bed at home. It's bliss, we are both sleeping so well. Reading this thread is making me appreciate it so much more.

However, I do agree that the quality of the mattress makes a bigger difference than the width of the bed and we have slept well enough in a standard double.

Regardless of whether it's a double or whatever, a quilt/bed cover at least one size larger means less likelihood of waking up cold.

We have a superking at home, mainly so that we can fit two single mattresses next to each other because we have very different mattress requirements. It’s not the fitting is both in to a double on holiday that’s the problem, it’s that the mattress will be wrong for one of us, usually me. The lack of space is the least of my problems really.

lifeonthelane · 16/10/2025 21:17

We used to have a standard double and it was fine, even with a toddler in the middle 😂 upgraded to a king now and the space feels vast!

AsAliveAsYouNeedMeToBe · 16/10/2025 21:21

God no. I have a double, but I sleep alone. I'm skinny and almost 6ft, it fits me fine, but if I'd be bigger or needed to share it with another person - no chance in hell. And wouldn't book an accom with a double. I hate 'snuggling', 'cuddling' and someone hogging my space, so if I needed to share, it would have to be a superking at least.

I do have a superking duvet though. I like the feeling of a lot of duvet all around me.

My 13 year old even has a double, refused a single. And she's a tiny thing, only 5.4''.

JustYourAveregeMillennialMam · 16/10/2025 21:21

Me (a UK size 18) and my husband (6ft tall XL in clothes) have always had double beds and have never struggled 😂

brownglass · 16/10/2025 21:29

DH and I sleep in a standard double, it's fine.

We’re getting an emperor size next (200x200), currently in a king. I’m 4’10”, hubby is 6’4” neither overweight but 1 year old in the middle. The extra 50cm will be lovely!

This sounds like a dream!

shhblackbag · 16/10/2025 21:33

I sleep alone in a superking (180x200) and absolutely love it. It's my biggest indulgence. There's no room for side tables in my current bedroom. But I will not have a smaller bed. Two people also sleep really comfortably in the bed. Worth every penny I spent on it.

We have a king-size at home but manage fine in a srd double when on hol etc. Hubby is a large male 6'3 and 19st and I'm 5'7 and 11.7st and we manage OK.

ToldYouTwiceAlready · 16/10/2025 21:37

I sleep in a king-sized, he sleeps in a double. Retired, we like our own space when it comes to sleep.

Niallig32839 · 16/10/2025 21:37

Always had a king size bed and couldn’t imagine getting a smaller one. I’m only 5ft and normally a size 6/8 and husband is about 5ft9 and slim but I like the space. Also have a dog who likes to lie at my feet, a 2 year old who likes to come in for a cuddle in the morning and 8 months pregnant so it’s feeling crowded

MidlandsGal1 · 16/10/2025 21:38

We have a small double and sleep great without elbowing each other. Would I love a bigger bed? Absolutely, but I sleep in the Superman pose so more room is always better but in 9 years we’ve never had issues sleeping

MrsR87 · 16/10/2025 21:38

Me and my husband have been a couple since 6th form and so would regularly share a single bed in my uni accommodation, so there was a time when a standard double felt huge. We still have a standard double now, 20 years later as it was a choice of a bigger bed or a dressing table so we I went with the dressing table. We love it when we’re away and it’s a king size bed but it feels no hardship going back to a standard double.

Jellyjellyonaplate · 16/10/2025 21:40

As students we shared a single 3 foot bed. In our early twenties we had a 4 foot bed. We finally got a double in our mid twenties which was amazing.

My husband wanted a king when we moved house and had room but I wouldn't let him as I hated how we end up sleeping in separate spaces on the bed if we're in a king. I get cold! So we still have a plain double.

Wigtopia · 16/10/2025 21:41

We have a standard double and tons of unused space as we spoon all night. 😅 we have also managed to sleep in a single together again spooning all night but I know that is not at all normal and was only due to lack of other options.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 16/10/2025 21:42

our bed is 160 cm x 200 cm. The “standard” doubles we usually get in UK hotels (unless they specify king size or similar) are pretty bad imo. I need space to stick out my elbows 🤣

LittleLeggs · 16/10/2025 21:44

Yup standard double for the two of us. It's called standard for a reason. Unless you're much larger/taller than the average person, or have specific physical impediments, it's ridiculous to demand more than the "standard"

longtompot · 16/10/2025 21:44

We have a standard double as our room isn't wide enough for a king size bed. I would love a king size bed and always relish it if we get one when staying away. But we cope just fine with our plain old double at home

childofthe607080s · 16/10/2025 15:08

We have a standard double but don’t suffer feom rolling or clinging as you described

we are both quite slim /light which might make a difference and also have a decent mattress - because of my habit of rolling out of bed we need one that keeps some shape or I end up bruised

But maybe you suffer from falling out of bed….and might not if you had a bigger one…? 😉

bouncydog · 16/10/2025 21:45

We have super kings in all bedrooms at home but have a double at DD’s. Love staying with them but bed is too much too small - it gives each individual 2’ 3” of space which is loads less than a single! The mattress which is comfortable was on an Ikea base. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago it gave way and we ended up in the base on the floor! The new bed is more comfortable but a double is too narrow. To save any comments we were both reading!

DreamTheMoors · 16/10/2025 21:46

Swiftie1878 · 16/10/2025 15:06

I couldn’t sleep in a standard double on my own even! Too small!!

I have my great-grandparent’s bedroom furniture. There’s a chest of drawers, a vanity, a desk and a double bed.
My great-grandfather was a tall man - I don’t know how he ever fit in the bed, and my great-grandmother was tiny. I suppose she fit in the space he didn’t take up - I don’t know.
Now I use lt - and love it, but with a new mattress. Twice.
However, I have a little dog that has to be ON ME and I find myself hanging on to the edge of the bed for dear life while my puppydog is pressed against me sound asleep and 3/4 of the bed is empty!
I wouldn’t change a thing - but I really can sleep comfortably in my double bed. If I move the dog. Which I do.
But I’d prefer a queen - except hahaha I’d just end up hanging on to the edge of that.
I’ve created a “bed monster.”

cupfinalchaos · 16/10/2025 21:47

To me that’s a single. Could only sleep on my own.

Imdunfer · 16/10/2025 21:55

It's only fine if both of you are static sleepers. If one or both of you are restless sleepers or replay football matches in your sleep it's completely hopeless. We've had twin 4 ft beds for years. Bliss!
