Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We had a standard double when we were together, I don't recall any issues.

MagnaICe · 16/10/2025 20:47

I sleep alone in a king. Husband sleeps on a single, somewhere else in the place. I live in a flat and still manage to fit the king and all kinds of other furniture pieces....perhaps my flat is massive???

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 16/10/2025 20:49

We do and it's fine but we are quite a small couple. We had a super king on honeymoon and hated it. It felt like we were miles away from each other when we woke up in the morning

apples24 · 16/10/2025 20:50

We used to sleep in a small double with a toddler and managed just fine.

We did though then eventually upgrade to a king when I started expecting our second. With whom I now sleep in a single (bottom of a kids bunk! 😅) Husband has the king, often with the older kid climbing in. Sometimes all 4 of us sleep in the king.

We have a super king at home and I wouldn't book accommodation with a standard double. King is fine but no smaller, we're both nearly 6ft tall and I'm about 3 stone overweight.
I'm amazed at how many people have a standard double, I wouldn't sleep well!

CatherinedeBourgh · 16/10/2025 20:51

We've slept in everything from a single, standard double, 5ft when we were young. When ds1 was a baby we would cosleep in a 5ft bed. When ds2 was born we bought an emperor (2mx2m) and have never looked back, we now have this size beds in all the rooms in the house.

Space in bed is nice! That said, we are fine when we go on holiday in smaller beds. But I do miss ours.

StrawberrySquash · 16/10/2025 20:52

Used to with the boyfriend. Although we bought a king when we moved to an unfinished flat. Always with a king duvet though. And my sister has a double because they couldn't get a bigger one into the loft conversion.

Barnbrack · 16/10/2025 20:54

Are you very overweight? I'm not slim (size 14 but have been an 18) and she is a medium in clothes and we have a standard double. Most nights the 7 and 4 he old migrate in at some point. It's a relic from our previous small flat and can't wait to upgrade but have had other priorities but it's definitely not sleep on the floor worthy

I have not shared a bed OR bedroom with my DH (been together 30-ish years, both mid 50s) for 15 years or so. I couldn't do it ever again. I hate sharing my bed. With pets, children, or DH. I like my own space and room to breathe, and stretch, and sleep in peace. Sleep deprivation is a form of torture, and I am evil if I'm sleep deprived. Snappy, angry, and pissed off at everything. I find it hard to function too.

Having my own bedroom is lush, and DH and I have separate rooms when we go on holiday too. I could never share with him. It would ruin the holiday. He snores, and farts, and grunts, and coughs, and chats shit in his sleep. I would have such bad sleep deprivation that the holiday would be shit.

I don't know how anyone can share a bed/a bedroom long-term. I think it's untenable to share a bed long term with someone. Even sharing a bedroom is hard, as you risk sleep deprivation.

I don't care if I'm coming across as entitled/spoilt/princessy. Or if people used to sleep 3 to a bed, and 9 to a bedroom 'back in the day.' I'm entitled to my opinions and preferences.

No, no princessy. I live in a flat and I still manage to give each one here a bedroom and their own bed, I have the king size.

I find it horrible going on holiday to a superking bed - USA is the worst! It's like I'm on holiday on my own.

Where is the warm, annoying, uncomfortable partner what I've slept cosied next to for 45 years? He's far, far away across a great divide of cold matress.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 16/10/2025 20:57

We did for years but now we have a king would struggle in a double.

Dont sleep on the floor, top and tail in the double instead

MagnaICe · 16/10/2025 20:59

I roll a lot and apparently kick a lot. Also cannot sleep with anyone else if they snore or pull my duvet, because I tuck all duvet edges around me and also cover my face leaving a space for breathing. Also sleep with 2 duvets and 5 blankets. I can sleep that way in a single, double or kind but I can never sleep well with another person, so I sleep alone in a king - you don't need a big house, big room or nothing or much money to sleep well. I use the same old bed linen since we were much younger. Change the beds and matresses occasionally.

RangiroaDive · 16/10/2025 20:59

No emperor... I cant fathom a double!

Haha. Yes I know what you mean. But you can still snuggle in the middle if you want!

Of course people sleep in a standard double!!!
I don't know any couples who don't !!!

Perplexed how you know the size of bed for every couple you know!

MarioLink · 16/10/2025 21:01

We do. I am overweight and DH is tall. We both sleep well.

A standard double is 4' 6" When my parents were newly married a standard double was 4' 0" and a single was 2' 6"

BeanQuisine · 16/10/2025 21:02

Depends on what you're accustomed to, I suppose. I slept in a king-size double for most of my adult life despite mostly living alone, largely for the rare times I'd be hosting a partner or a "one night guest".

As these occasions became even more rare, I decided the bed was taking up far too much room and got myself an adult-sized single.

At first I was frightened I'd forget how much smaller it is and fall out, but that never happened and I soon became used to it and find it perfectly comfortable.

mindutopia · 16/10/2025 21:03

Lord no, we have a superking and frankly, I could do with about an extra foot of space. We have not slept in a double since pre-children (when baby dd arrived, we co-slept and Dh was shafted to a single mattress on the floor, where he stayed until we got a single bed to slap onto the side of our double). We did 2 rounds of babies with me and baby in the double and Dh in the single, so several years, like that, until we got a superking.

When we were dating though, Dh only had a large single. It was like one of those singles that is a little bit wider than a standard single. We slept in that at his for several years. I should point out that we are 6’5 and 5’9 and not tiny people. I was clearly flush with young love back then because it annoys me now if he’s within about 2 feet of me while sleeping. 😂

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 16/10/2025 21:05

I'm a widow now but DH and I had a double and it was lovely. We were quite big people but we loved to cuddle close. I have a king size all to myself now but I pile things on the empty side so that when I turn in the night I don't feel so alone.

NeedATreat · 16/10/2025 21:05

My DH is keen to downsize our king to a double. We have a campervan and both sleep so well on the slightly-smaller-than double bed. We both like the proximity to one another but don’t find it too tight or small. I’m tall and slim, he’s probably average height and weight for a man, and we fit nicely in it

SheSpeaks · 16/10/2025 21:07

On my holidays I sleep on a mat which is 43-50cm wide.

At home I have a king size. But would have no problem in a double.

Hallywally · 16/10/2025 21:08

I’ve always struggled to share a bed. I’m not tall nor fat. Ex DP was fairly short and slim and I always had disrupted sleep even in a kingsize. We had to have separate duvets. Now divorced and sleeping alone is the best thing about being single! I enjoy sex and physical intimacy but to me sleep is a solo activity. I’m a very light sleeper anyway and just get so disrupted with someone else in the room/bed.

ImplodingLoading · 16/10/2025 21:09

Oh christ no! I'm a standard sized woman, probably on the petite side, but my DH is a massive rugby player, 6ft 4 and would struggle in a standard double on his own!
Super king all the way! We do struggle on holidays and breaks away!

TheYorkshirePudding · 16/10/2025 21:11

We’re getting an emperor size next (200x200), currently in a king. I’m 4’10”, hubby is 6’4” neither overweight but 1 year old in the middle. The extra 50cm will be lovely!
