On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

I have not shared a bed OR bedroom with my DH (been together 30-ish years, both mid 50s) for 15 years or so. I couldn't do it ever again. I hate sharing my bed. With pets, children, or DH. I like my own space and room to breathe, and stretch, and sleep in peace. Sleep deprivation is a form of torture, and I am evil if I'm sleep deprived. Snappy, angry, and pissed off at everything. I find it hard to function too.

Having my own bedroom is lush, and DH and I have separate rooms when we go on holiday too. I could never share with him. It would ruin the holiday. He snores, and farts, and grunts, and coughs, and chats shit in his sleep. I would have such bad sleep deprivation that the holiday would be shit.

I don't know how anyone can share a bed/a bedroom long-term. I think it's untenable to share a bed long term with someone. Even sharing a bedroom is hard, as you risk sleep deprivation.

I don't care if I'm coming across as entitled/spoilt/princessy. Or if people used to sleep 3 to a bed, and 9 to a bedroom 'back in the day.' I'm entitled to my opinions and preferences.

How is that even possible? My fat ass has loads of room in a standard double.

That's what I wonder. I'm a fairly chunky monkey but no where near not fitting into a standard double. People must be huge!

ThisRealFawn · 16/10/2025 20:12

We used to but it wasn’t comfortable. We’re a normal weight but my partner is tall. Switched to a superking and it’s much better

Having a tough day?

Not nearly as tough as her grandparents who lived through the war, no doubt.

heatdeath · 16/10/2025 20:13

we do! dh is 6ft2 & length not an issue. We actually had a king sized but swapped about 15 years ago because it seemed like a waste of space. We an an enormous (super king?) on holiday recently & it just felt ridiculous.

BuildbyNumbere · 16/10/2025 20:13

I’m sure many people do if they don’t have the space to accommodate anything larger. Silly question really.

Puregoldy · 16/10/2025 20:16

Used to have a king mainly because the children kept getting in. Now I have a double and it’s so comfy I do love it more when I’m on my own. I don’t live with dp. He has a king and mine is more comfortable but it’s down to the mattress. Neither of us are tall if it makes a difference.

Cornishclio · 16/10/2025 20:16

My DH is tall so we have a King size and always book one if we go away.

Unpaidviewer · 16/10/2025 20:17

Standard double here. We have shared a single quite a few times as well. Neither of us move much in our sleep.

ravenclaworslytherin · 16/10/2025 20:17

We have a standard double and never had an issue. We often have the 3 year old and five year old in bed with us as well

LouiseTopaz · 16/10/2025 20:19

I used to then we got a super king and I couldn't ever go back

MinnietheMini · 16/10/2025 20:19

We stayed in an Airbnb in Brighton-Le-Sands and the only bed for the two of us was a SMALL double. It was horrendous to be mis-sold in this way. The place was filthy too. Awful experience.

Midsizegal29 · 16/10/2025 20:19

We have a standard double bed. Would love a king size one day but we’ve never had the £££ to buy a new frame, mattress and bedding, or a room big enough to put it in until we moved. It’s never been an issue, and we both sleep well.

LightandBreezy · 16/10/2025 20:22

Tbh I didn't think @didntlikeanyofthesuggestions was being snarky or virtue signaling - it's potentially a valid point in the sense that we're fine with whatever we are used to. My GGP's were poor so had a double they shared with 14 kids and slept in shifts to make it possible 😅Also a kingsize is only 10 cms wider than a standard double so not really a huge difference? I don't share so all beds are fine for me - have a double and a kingsize at home but quite like the secure feeling a single gives me. I just don't really like sharing as I'm such a delicate light sleeper 💅

tartyflette · 16/10/2025 15:40

Not much of a surprise, they’re cheaper and many will also be sold to single people or couples who sleep separately.

My 3 teen children had double beds. Was useful I'd people stayed we could turf them out and have a double for guests. Dh and I have a superking. Luckily all bedrooms are big enough for doubles

trainedopossum · 16/10/2025 20:23

Yes, standard double for big DH and me plus his wedge pillow and extra pillow for his hip and my huge u-shaped maternity pillow for my back.

DH had a sprung superking when we were dating and it moved around a lot and I didn’t sleep well. I was always losing the duvet and cold at the edges. We replaced it with a double memory foam mattress and it’s great.

We have slept in a small double before when we were away for the weekend.

Daftypants · 16/10/2025 20:25

For years we shared a 5ft wide bed ( I think that’s a queen size not a king size )
We have managed in a double when staying with family but it’s not really comfortable for us .
Now we have more space ( children left home ) so we have our own rooms , DH has the queen size bed and I have my own double bed and it’s bliss

RadiatorDrying · 16/10/2025 20:26

Not RTFT but I think the issue is that once you've become used to sleeping in a superking there's no going back. I have a superking at home, have a king in my second home <awaits Mumsnet hate> and that feels small by comparison. I'm 5' 6" and 9 stone (partner is larger but she's not with me all the time) but I love the space. Neither of my bedrooms are large but I'm happy for much of the room to be bed - you spend a third of your life in bed and sleep is essential to happiness so it's a sensible investment.

We have gay male friends, both tall if slim men and they have a standard double and I'm always amazed by this and wonder how they don't feel hemmed in. When I was a child everyone had a standard double but I look at them now and think they're incredibly small. Both my kids have had small doubles since they were young, I just don't see the point in single beds if you've got the room for anything bigger.

If I'm looking for a place to stay away from home I always filter searches by bed size - I won't book anything with less than a king as I know it would just feel too small. I remember as an undergrad 30 years ago two of us sleeping in a single seemed both feasible and romantic and I just think well, we were young then 😀

MouldyOldBaps · 16/10/2025 20:30

I suspect you have a mattress problem rather than a size problem. We only had a standard double and two kids were often added to it by 6.30 in the morning!
A bad mattress always does ‘roll together’. We then had a king size which was great until 20 years later and we clung on to the edge every night. A new mattress resolved it immediately.

FunnyDoginLahLahLand · 16/10/2025 20:32

Yeah we've been in a standard double together for many years with no problem. (Also like PPs we shared a single as students, and co-sleeping when kids were tiny). I think it's what you're used to, rather than any moral superiority.

I'm realising from this thread that I do need a king sized duvet though.

somenerves · 16/10/2025 20:33

We do! I find a king too large 😂

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 16/10/2025 20:35

Is a double bed in the UK equal to a full-sized bed in the USA? Or is it more like a queen? Our full size here has a shorter length than a queen or king. Queen and standard king have the same length. California king is shorter but wider.

We have a queen and I am frequently on the couch as DH makes noise, steals covers and makes the bed hot. We had a king on vacation and it was wonderful, but no room in the bedroom for one.

Maray1967 · 16/10/2025 20:37

Thirty years married and we’re still in a double! Duvet must be a king size though, and the mattress is great.

When we stay in a hotel and it’s a king size bed it’s a real treat though.

Shamrockshirley · 16/10/2025 20:37

I’m becoming increasingly convinced it’s all in the mattress. I also cant stand touching anyone when I sleep. I get too hot, so am far happier on the floor than in the dreaded double bed.

We DO! Crazy I know.

Also we are not small. I'm 13st hubby is 14 1/2.

We wanted space in our bedroom for other furniture - at the moment there is also a standard single in our room, as our son who is learning disabled sleeps in our room. We used to co sleep but he likes his own bed now. He technically could have his own room but we like to make sure he's not up to no good (he's a wanderer).

Personally I find it comfortable but husband occasionally moans I'm elbowing him and stuff. He doesn't seem all that bothered though.
