Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Is this supposed to be a joke?

No. Not at all. Love to spread out in bed!

Helloautumnagain · 16/10/2025 19:26

I’m can’t imagine coming through the menopause whilst sharing a standard double. When DP isn’t staying over, I basically roll from one side to the other over the course of the night in search for a cool zone.

Toadetta · 16/10/2025 19:28

Me and DH have a standard double bed but with a king size duvet. Otherwise it's like tug of war.

butterpuffed · 16/10/2025 19:29

I couldn't care less who sleeps in a double [me] and who sleeps in larger ones , what's cracking me up is the attitude of 'God NO , I couldn't bear to sleep in a double' 😂😂

SusiQ18472638 · 16/10/2025 19:29

We have a king, if we ever stay somewhere with a double I hate it!

kodakpp3 · 16/10/2025 19:32

Many of who met partners etc at college/uni will have slept happily if cramped in single beds!

Happy days.

Gruffporcupine · 16/10/2025 19:34

God no. DH is 6 foot 4 so me and DC3 would be on the floor if we didn't have a big bed

Shoxfordian · 16/10/2025 19:36

Dh has a standard double in another bedroom and I sleep in a king.

I couldn’t sleep in a standard double on my own even! Too small!!

How is that even possible? My fat ass has loads of room in a standard double.

Lovemyboston · 16/10/2025 19:45

A King size bed is only 6” wider than a double! We have a double and use the king size bedding we had when we changed back to a double. Really not much difference. Although we are average size, so that might make a difference. Must admit tho, we stay in an apartment white often in twin beds and I always have a lovely sleep. (Don’t tell hubby) lol x

CelestialCandyfloss · 16/10/2025 19:48

I'm on my own but I have a King... the cat stretches out and takes up all the room lol. I'm thinking of moving and it might be to a new build so I might get a double but I'm sure it would be impossible with two, I feel. Mind you when I was young skinny and in love my boyfriend (also skinny but 6ft tall) shared a single bed for months! 😂

dontmalbeconme · 16/10/2025 19:48

DH and I prefer a standard double. We're also OK with a small double or, at a push, if we must, a king. Any bigger than a king, we might as well have twin beds, which isn't our preference, and we'd avoid.

Married knocking 30 years, I'm definitely fat, DH is top end of healthy weight, but we're both under 6'. Also, seemingly unlike most couples on Mumsnet, we genuinely enjoy being together, including sleeping closely, working from home together etc.

Whyamiherenow · 16/10/2025 19:48

We have a king bed. My parents are appalled. They have been together fifty years. Always a standard double and they aren’t small people. I think it’s just preference.

Lovemyboston · 16/10/2025 19:50

Quite, not white. Doh!

QuizzlyBears · 16/10/2025 19:56

We are both tall and have a super king for the length (in a new build, plenty of space, it is possible!) - but could absolutely manage with a double, we enjoy sleeping closely and usually end up on one pillow together anyway 😂 I also have a cleaner who does my bedding though, and I think I might love the bed a little less if I had to battle with that size linen!

soupyspoon · 16/10/2025 19:57

No.

King size for me

Single bed for him in another room

lol.

snoopyfanaccountant · 16/10/2025 19:58

We have a standard double and in 31 years it has never been a problem.
Our spare room bed isn't even a full size double. MIL's DM had 3/4 bed that she wanted rid of and we had an unfurnished spare room so we acquired the bed. We had to replace it due to an insurance claim after a burst pipe above our spare room and we discovered that it was the most expensive bed in the house.

SwarmsofLadybirds · 16/10/2025 19:59

We have a king. I'd love to upgrade to a super king one day but the bedding puts me off! Changing the bedding is a bloody nightmare as is, the shenanigans with super king sheets must be quite something.

MoonBugs · 16/10/2025 15:08

Yes we have a standard double, dh is extremely tall, and we usually have our three year old in the middle with us too at some point in the night.
It’s fine.

Same. Couldn’t fit anything bigger than a double . Rooms too small

ChocolateCinderToffee · 16/10/2025 20:03

I am a large person and I fill my standard double.

Kazzybingbong · 16/10/2025 20:03

People actually do sleep in double beds! My mum and dad always have and when we viewed our house, they had a double and it honestly looked minuscule.

Husband and I absolutely cannot share a double. It would be hell with his fidgeting, jerking and snoring. We have a superking but even that’s challenging. We usually end up in separate beds because of it! And I much prefer it. No earplugs, no sleep headphones, it’s awesome.

DucksInARowingBoat · 16/10/2025 20:06

We tend to stay in hostels and cheap hotels and cope fine with the standard double (or even small double) beds. Short term it's fine even though my 6"6' husband's feet stick out the bottom. 🤣

dottiedodah · 16/10/2025 20:07

We have come back from a sleepless night in a well known chain .not sure if mattress too small .4 ft 6 .6ft at home. Or just uncomfortable. My DGC used a 4ft o ins for 60 odd years!.

Talkingdonut · 16/10/2025 20:07

We have a super king size at home. OH is 6ft 6 and we have two labradors in bed with us. We went on holiday (without the dogs) and had a king-size. I honestly never realised just how much he fidgets at night!! It was fine for the week but super king all the way for us at home!

MyAcornWood · 16/10/2025 20:07

My in laws have a standard double, it does seem rather small but then I’m used to a superking. We’ve stayed in a couple of holiday cottages with standard doubles and altho I don’t mind squishing up to my husband (we’re both relatively clingy sleepers!) the length is a nightmare. I’m 5’8 and DH is somewhere just over 6’ and doubles are just too short!
