Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Bloody hell - this has given the biggest laugh today!!!!
Me and my DP have a standard double and we manage even though neither of us is small - plus we often have to make room for the cats too.
We actually see a king size as a luxury if we stay away and are never bothered if it's a double bed. The mattress quality is what bothers us most. If it's a bad mattress then we won't sleep regardless of the bed size.
I find myself rather bemused by this post tbh 🤔

Same, at couples who suffer in a double.

Cannot understand anything less than a superking.

It isn't that hard to understand, surely?

I'd never fit one into my bedroom
They are expensive
etc

Worriedalltheday · 16/10/2025 18:50

We have a superking and always have. Dh and I are slim as well, but I still feel we struggle in a double.

Are you really tall? I can comfortably star fish in a double.

Me too but then I have it all to myself plus a king size duvet.
In the highly unlikely event of ever having a man in my bed then I would want the widest bed possible!

Evaka · 16/10/2025 18:52

Yeah, we slept in a double like clowns for a few years. Hellish. Im a light sleeper and we're both quite tall. Super king all the way.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/10/2025 18:53

We had a standard double until three years ago, now a king. Dh is over six foot, and I’m a taller lady. Was fine. It was what we were used to.

MyDogLikesKayaking · 16/10/2025 18:54

We are very average sized people and have a superking at home. Our sleep quality when we stay at both sets of parents -who have double beds in the spare room - is shocking. When we go away we filter for places with at least a king bed.

A standard cot - not cot bed is 60cm wide
A standard double be is 135 wide.
So there is 15cm in the difference.
Think of a ruler. It is a foot (12inches) in length or 30cm.
Half a ruler is 15cm or 6 inches.
Divide it by 2.
So an adult gets 3 inches more in a standard double bed than a baby gets in a standard cot.
😮
By my reckoning, but I might be wrong.
I love our Super King bed.

It's not a double. That's what bothers me the most. The public accepted a lie!

So true! An actual double is a king.

Sagaciously · 16/10/2025 18:56

I think our bed is a standard double. We like it! Our house is really old and the rooms are all weird sizes with sloping ceilings.

When have a holiday house with a huge bed but we feel a bit lost in it, the same goes in hotels.

namechangetheworld · 16/10/2025 18:58

We cope just fine with a double plus king sized duvet, and we're both chubby and often have a 6 year old wedged in there.

There are some right bloody princesses on here😂

Swiftie1878 · 16/10/2025 15:06

I couldn’t sleep in a standard double on my own even! Too small!!

That’s hilarious! So you’d not like a single bed then…

Permanentlytiredout47 · 16/10/2025 19:04

DH and I have a double and it’s perfect for us. We’re definitely in the cuddly category weight-wise.
We are on holiday in a massive bed right now and it’s too big!
Plus I hate putting the duvet cover on a double duvet, let alone anything bigger!

Nope. I would say more like folk with low standards.

2 chubby adults and a kid in a double is grim.

opencecilgee · 16/10/2025 19:07

Always annoys me when hotels have double beds

surely most couples need a King

King size and Super King are longer than a double by around 10cm. The difference is noticeable for any one over 5ft 8.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 16/10/2025 19:11

Best place we’ve ever stayed had two king-size beds ziplinked together, separate duvets. A joyful amount of sleep space! I’m in the double-is-too-small camp. We most recently stayed in one at a friend’s but our 3yo wanted to join us; we couldn’t even turn over without disturbing everyone. A miserable night’s sleep.

Faithless12 · 16/10/2025 19:13

We have a king size now but had a double. We can happily sleep in a small double at a relatives house. I don’t like a super king bed.

ChocolateBoxCottage · 16/10/2025 19:20

I don't like being breathed on while I'm trying to sleep. I need a no man's land in the middle of the bed.

Acedth · 16/10/2025 19:20

My husband and I, and our spaniel, sleep cosy and comfortable in a 3’3” wide bed (standard double is 4’6”)

SeaGlassDreamer · 16/10/2025 19:21

I’ve only ever had a double bed and I could do with losing a few pounds. It’s fine.

Notmyreality · 16/10/2025 19:21

Hell no. I’ll keep my super king pls.

thisishowloween · 16/10/2025 19:23

No, way too small! We had to share one on holiday once and it was SO cramped.

We have a king sized bed. Wouldn't ever consider going smaller.

BIossomtoes · 16/10/2025 19:24

We hate super kings. I texted my bloke to ask him if he wanted a cup of tea the last time we had one in an hotel.
