Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We have a 7ft bed 😆 love a big bed! Can’t be doing with people too near me when I’m sleeping! A double bed just wouldn’t do, both my kids have double beds..

CantBreathe90 · 16/10/2025 18:12

We have separate rooms 😂 He snores loudly. Shudder to remember actually sleeping in the same (king sized) bed - rolling, fidgeting, boiling hot... I despise not having my own space to sleep in.

I couldn’t sleep in a standard double on my own even! Too small!!

I’m 5’ and slept my entire life in a single as my accommodation has always been cramped and then when I finally got my own home where the bedrooms are quite large, anything smaller than a King would have looked odd so I had to buy that size. However, most nights I can be found just clinging to one edge and occupying just over a third of the bed - my muscle memory is so strong haha, it just feels unnatural to do anything but! 😅 It’s a crazy waste of space I realise and even the decorator passed comment on “that’s a large bed for such a tiny person” lol. It looks lovely though and I imagine if I do find a partner again it’s pretty great then as it offers a lot of space to comfortably sleep 🙂.

Seaitoverthere · 16/10/2025 18:14

my Sleeping in a standard double days are behind me, I’m not having less than 3 for for myself as you would in a standard double and I’m not sharing a duvet anymore so it is super king with a double duvet each after a trip to France where we had this and that was that when we came back.

DH moves around a lot and steals duvet. This combined with menopause overheating plus insomnia and inflammatory arthritis where I need an arrangements of pillows, we need the space to be comfortable and not disturb each other.

I don’t stay anywhere if it has a double bed, king size minimum.

SilverStateLady · 16/10/2025 18:16

Yeah…..I’m a small person, but my DH is an actual giant 😂 He’s 6ft5 and an absolute unit, so a standard double is impossible. We’ve got a US spec King which is slightly bigger than a U.K. spec Super King. That’s comfortable and long enough so his feet don’t hang off the end 🫠

RachTheAlpaca · 16/10/2025 18:19

I'm really shocked by this.
We have a double and have plenty of space!
We previously had a small 4ft double too and had loads of space then also!

If we stay at a hotel in a giant bed, we end up right at the end together as it's too big for us

Enchanta · 16/10/2025 18:21

Super kingsize for the last 20 years I guess. On the odd occasion we've slept in a double, it feels absolutely tiny, just because you get used to something.

We deliberately went big to co sleep safely with our babies, and now we just love it.

Grumpybear33 · 16/10/2025 18:21

Nope. Super king size and we’re both skinny. Hate having to sleep in a standard double when away from home.

Mate. Top marks for misery olympics there

Ha ha totally pointless comment wasn’t it 🤣

Kirbert2 · 16/10/2025 18:23

Just a bog standard double here. Couldn't fit anything bigger plus furniture in the bedroom.

Usernamenotav · 16/10/2025 18:23

A single is like 3ft wide and a double only 1.5ft wider so can't see how 2 people coild comfortably sleep in a standard double

Lj8893 · 16/10/2025 18:23

Yep. We sleep in a standard double (no room for bigger), DH is overweight and I’m obese (probably morbidly) and we get on ok. I mean I could sleep better without DHs snoring but a bigger bed isn’t going to fix that!

scaredfriend · 16/10/2025 18:26

I do. Neither DH nor I are overweight though (I’m average, size 12, DH is quite slim and only 5’11”).

Belladog1 · 16/10/2025 18:30

I adore my partner, but the one place we are totally incompatible is in bed asleep.

I'm menopausal and get hot flushes, he is a bigger chap and if I fall asleep cuddling him he can't sleep because I'm on his side of the bed and he cant move. If he cuddles me I hate it as a hot flush might strike and I can't get him off me. I end up clinging to the edge of the bed and he gets 3/4 of it.

We are in a king size bed, and if we ever live together full time, I'm getting a bigger bed!

LiarAtAWitchTrial · 16/10/2025 18:31

We have a 4'6'' double and I feel like we have loads of room. I'm quite small and slim, but dh is tall and slightly overweight, and he finds the bed fine.

We have slept in beds of a range of different sizes. When we were students we used to sleep in a single bed together most nights, that was a bit of a squeeze!
There is a king size bed in the spare bedroom at my parents house and we often stay in it. It's fine but not that much different to the double.

We have slept in a super king and didn't like it. I can't reach him to kick him when he starts snoring. Might as well be in separate beds at that point.

Legomania · 16/10/2025 18:34

My parents are/were tall and had a European style double (ie two full sized single mattresses) so a standard UK double has always seemed tiny to me.
I also can't stand to sleep cuddled up, so (amongst other reasons) when DH and I moved in together we bought a super king straight away. It has indeed ruined us for normal sized doubles, even rolling over I find I have to shift back so I don't fall out.
We are completely average sized by the way.

Imagine if our grandparents and great grandparents who lived through world wars and sheltered underground at night as they were bombed could read this thread.

Oh yawn. What a silly comment.

SALaw · 16/10/2025 18:36

We built an extension to get a room big enough to get a super king size.

CluelessAboutBiology · 16/10/2025 18:36

We are two very well-upholstered adults and we have a standard double. Fits us but can be snug when the cats join us.

Londonrach1 · 16/10/2025 18:36

Yes. Room not big enough for anything bigger

buffybots · 16/10/2025 18:42

I have a superking to myself Blush

LaughingCat · 16/10/2025 18:42

God no! Superking here and we’d be down with an emperor. Standard double was made for hobbitses.

user1496146479 · 16/10/2025 18:43

God no! Superking all the way here & hate if we end up staying anywhere that has doubles etc

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 16/10/2025 18:46

I slept in a standard double with my partner for over 20 years until we moved and could fit a king size in the bedroom.

GreyCloudsLooming · 16/10/2025 18:47

We have a standard double and it is fine. My parents have always had a small double.
