To find salary offered an insult?

Willowtree5 · 16/10/2025 14:20

As part of a restructure, I have been asked if I would take on three direct reports (I currently don’t manage anyone, but have in the past - big pull of current role was no line management responsibility).

I said I’d consider it - whilst I know I can manage people, it does add to my workload and the ‘mental load’ of dealing with all the crap around sickness/absence, 1:1’s etc.

My manager said she’d establish what additional uplift to my salary would be possible and let me know.

They’ve come back with an offer of £125,000 (current salary pre bonuses £105,000) which I find frankly insulting given the workload this would add.

AIBU to tell them to stuff it?

If you really can command that sort of salary and think you're worth a lot more if you line manage, then tell them you'll walk away unless they improve the offer significantly.
.
Your posts do come across as goady. If you have that much confidence in your ability (and good for you) why are you seeking validation on Mumsnet when you know many people on here won't earn anywhere near that sort of money.

So just get on with it and tell them to fuck off if you think it's an insult.

ExposedCankles · 16/10/2025 18:14

YANBU to say no considering the tax implications etc.

YABU to describe it as insulting to a bunch of people from presumably every walk of life on here. Describe as such to your friends in your own bubble but pretty crass to describe a £20k pay rise as insulting for lots of people who are trying to get by on much less. Not cool.

Wexone · 16/10/2025 18:15

Firstly we haven't been told what industry OP is in so we don't know the rate she should be paid
Secondly everyone knows each industry is different - wages vary vastly across the board
I earn 80k i have no one reporting into me, my job is heavily involved in regulation and making sure things are complaint. My boss has three people reporting into him, including me, i know he definitely doesnt earn 120k he earns more than that plus bonus. And you know what he rightly so deserves it. He covers two vastly different areas, knows the system inside out always there for help and support and works every hour.
My Sis has 5 people report into her, has to travel alot and works long hours and she only earns 5k more than me, i think she is underpayed for the stress she deals with
Op i dont think its worth it however the concern would be the restructuring for me, would you be made redundant? can you renegotiate the increase? can you bench mark your role

No

Unless he’s no longer alive, perhaps you should fix that.

I think it sounds a really decent rise and it could lead to career progression.

My DH managed 150 people and earned 185k including his bonus.

I bet he didn’t line manage 150 people……..

Such a shitty thing to say.

The DNHS, eh? Tattle a bit quiet, op?

Horserider5678 · 16/10/2025 14:55

I earn a similar salary to you and manage 25 staff 🤦‍♀️

I earn £95k and manage six. It’s almost like people get paid differently depending on what job they do isn’t it!

LoyalLeader · 16/10/2025 18:18

Given that this is part of a restructure, the fact you were offered any salary upside at all is actually something. I don’t think you could have realistically expected more. Is this a “take it or leave it” offer? Be mindful that the redundancy payment might not be as generous (again, due to restructure) and that all your colleagues who will leave the company will be competing against you for jobs on the market. I’ve been in the exact same place very recently, not a pleasant situation to be in.

Why do you say that?

usernamealreadytaken · 16/10/2025 18:21

LooseCanyon · 16/10/2025 18:17

Such a shitty thing to say.

But not as shitty as a man who doesnt pay to support his children, or a woman who accepts that shitty behaviour 🤷‍♀️

TorroFerney · 16/10/2025 18:21

YourPeppyAmberTraybake · 16/10/2025 18:20

Why do you say that?

Line manage infers direct reports, at 150 youd have managers reporting to you or the spans of control are too large.

Victim blaming is shitty.

Unless he’s no longer alive, perhaps you should fix that.

Cucy · 16/10/2025 18:23

How much were you expecting?

Surely £20k more is a massive jump in one pay rise?

What was the previous employer on?

I never understood the logic of people who claim they live in London so need over £100k.
The majority of people I know who live in London earn less than £40k.

You have absolutely no idea what the story is, and it’s nothing to do with you or what OP asked. Wind your neck in.

Schoolchoicesucks · 16/10/2025 18:24

If I earned £105k without having to line manager anyone I would cling onto that as the dream.

An extra £20k isn't to be sniffed at - I line manager 3 people for about that much more than they earn.

If you say no, what will the impact be?

CountryChristmas · 16/10/2025 18:27

You’ll lose most of that due to loss of personal allowance etc, so if you feel it will add so much more stress to your job, then I wouldn’t take it. Managing people really changes a role and it sounds like you would prefer a role without it.

Nobumsonthetable · 16/10/2025 18:28

sosorryimnotsorry · 16/10/2025 14:40

Nobody needs over £100k sorry YABU. I would expect anyone over £100k to be having huge responsibilities including managing people. You are just being greedy

Tell me you don’t live in London without telling me you don’t live in London 😂

MellowPinkDeer · 16/10/2025 18:29

I got three new direct reports with no notice last week. That’s 7 in total. I got zero. I think you’re being a bit ridiculous tbh!

Irenesortof · 16/10/2025 18:32

Obviously you don't have to accept that offer if it doesn't feel worth your while, but I have to say it looks fine to me.

steff13 · 16/10/2025 18:34

I don't think it's insulting, per se; it's just about a 19% increase, and it's only three people. The difficulty involved in managing people very much depends on the people you're managing and how hands-on you're actually required to be. If you're comfortable with the role, I'd counter with 140K and see if they'll meet you in the middle.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 16/10/2025 18:34

Seems like a reasonable enough uplift. I’d be wary however of the tax and other implications. You’ll lose your childcare allowance unless you put it all into your pension.

It's not "only three people", though. It's a completely new job addition.
