To find salary offered an insult?

Willowtree5 · 16/10/2025 14:20

As part of a restructure, I have been asked if I would take on three direct reports (I currently don’t manage anyone, but have in the past - big pull of current role was no line management responsibility).

I said I’d consider it - whilst I know I can manage people, it does add to my workload and the ‘mental load’ of dealing with all the crap around sickness/absence, 1:1’s etc.

My manager said she’d establish what additional uplift to my salary would be possible and let me know.

They’ve come back with an offer of £125,000 (current salary pre bonuses £105,000) which I find frankly insulting given the workload this would add.

AIBU to tell them to stuff it?

How lucky you are to still have a job after a restructure! And to be offered more money to take on that responsibility. I think you’re being greedy.

Londonrach1 · 16/10/2025 18:40

Without knowing the job is impossible to say but if you want to take the job do if not don't and let someone else take it...

I doubt it's luck.

So, @HollyIvy89 , if I decide I want to restructure your job so you now have a completely different aspect added to it, are you being "greedy" to require proper payment for that?

Hayley1256 · 16/10/2025 18:45

Tbh I'd probs try and negotiate to £140k due to the tax implications

HonoraBridge · 16/10/2025 18:54

After tax, that is not much of an increase. However, in the current (terrible) economic climate it is a big cost for your employer. Look at the bigger picture. But if you don’t want to manage people - say “no”.

LemograssLollipop · 16/10/2025 18:58

What industry are you in?

How much time and input is required by you to manage the additional people?

She said it already. Finance.

Gruffporcupine · 16/10/2025 19:08

Make a counter offer. I would ask for double what they offered, or a 4 day week or something if they refused to match my counter. Otherwise gtf

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 16/10/2025 19:09

Adding three people doesn’t impact your salary that much. I managed 5 people and was on £55k!

Newbutoldfather · 16/10/2025 19:09

It’s a strange and goady OP.

I knew it was finance by your second post. The tone deafness of calling a 20% rise off £100k insulting is very typical of the bubble culture that finance is. I well recall people talking about ‘working for nothing’ in 2009, when their basic was £200k, as bonuses had been banned that year.

It seems a fair offer. You either want it or don’t want to manage the people, but it’s not derisory. I assume it could potentially lead to a higher bonus too.

Manxexile · 16/10/2025 19:10

Tell them to shove it.

You're obviously worth £17 zillion

Sad reality is that this is normal corporate behaviour.

I earn £52k and manage six people. I think you are being greedy.

maybe she lives in London though?

HollaHolla · 16/10/2025 19:14

God. I’m in HE. Team of about 30, and large budgetary responsibilities. Just over £55k. I’m in Edinburgh, which although isn’t London prices, houses are ridiculously expensive. For what it’s worth, the London weighting for my role would take the salary to around £60k.
Given our industrial action over a 1.5% salary offer, I’d bite your hand off for a 20% salary rise, to take on 3 direct reports.

Sickleg · 16/10/2025 19:15

sosorryimnotsorry · 16/10/2025 14:40

Nobody needs over £100k sorry YABU. I would expect anyone over £100k to be having huge responsibilities including managing people. You are just being greedy

You might need if you live in London

Deedeebob · 16/10/2025 19:15

I manage 11 people and don’t even get half of that. You need to calm down

Fleurdalys · 16/10/2025 19:17

Woe is you…
Get a fucking reality check

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 16/10/2025 19:22

Only you can decide whether the extra money is worth the increase in workload or not.

WalkDontWalk · 16/10/2025 19:22

If you don't want to do it, does it matter how much they offer?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 16/10/2025 19:23

Willowtree5 · 16/10/2025 14:43

Have you tried living in London as a single person with nursery age kids?

If you're in London with nursery age kids, does your £105k salary mean you're effectively on less money than if you were on £99k? Or does the bonus make it worth it?

Lostinbrum · 16/10/2025 19:26

I used to manage a team of 4 people and earnt £42k. Fuck off with your brag about how much you earn

Cosyblankets · 16/10/2025 19:29

WalkDontWalk · 16/10/2025 19:22

This is what I said a few hours ago but no response

shuggles · 16/10/2025 19:32

Never change, mumsnet.

newnamehereonceagain · 16/10/2025 19:34

While it looks great, I think the tax would really eat into the increase. Also Nb forthcoming budget end Nov.
I’d want the promoted role, personally, so I might ask for an increased holiday allowance perhaps? Untaxable and worth a great deal to me. But maybe not to you.

Sarhawari · 16/10/2025 19:34

Bloody hell I manage 8 and don’t stop all day in a highly responsible and technical role and earn 44k. I’m in the wrong job!
