They’ve got millions . Make them pay some of those millions to a women’s charity.

BBC STORY:

A charity run organised by the East London Mosque Trust has excluded women and girls aged 13 and over from taking part.
The Muslim Charity Run, which was held in Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets on Sunday, said on its website: "Our inclusive atmosphere ensures that every individual, from the youngest to the oldest, can take part and make a difference."
It added: "This is open to men, boys of all ages and girls under 12, but everyone is welcome at the park to cheer on the runners."

It can be a single sex event but admit children of both sexes. Maya forstater, who admittedly isn’t a lawyer but does head up sex matters which is an advocacy group relating to sex/equality act, thinks it is legal, just as it is legal to have women only events that allow young boys.

I took part in a women only running event last year. Should that be banned too?

You’ve missed the part about girls under 12 being allowed.

But as Muslims sport is often divided by sex. There are plenty of women only sport groups and activities.

It's really OTT the way everyone is going on about this one piddly fun run. It's run by a mosque.

If you're not Muslim or you don't attend that mosque I don't see why it's anyone's concern. Are the women of that mosque having problems with it? If so then fair enough.

Sickleg · 13/10/2025 17:30

First thread is at 40 pages. I’m asking if AUBU to call for legal action

OP posts:
Vinvertebrate · 13/10/2025 17:31

The legal position is that the race is unlawful under the EA2010 (based on the information here).

Women-only - fine (proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim)
Men-only - fine (as above)

Men and and boys of all ages plus females <12 - ooof, not fine.

Boohoo76 · 13/10/2025 17:32

Anyone who thinks this is OK has a serious problem. Many years ago, at university, I took part in a Balloon debate where one participant argued that women and girls should not be allowed an education. It’s depressing that we haven’t moved forward and that people are still defending those that support discrimination against women.

Bambamhoohoo · 13/10/2025 17:34

Who could sue them?

nomas · 13/10/2025 17:34

Our local mosque has separate events for women only.

The recent ones are:

  • British MMA classes
  • Cupping therapy
  • Basic Life Support
  • Archery
  • Karate
  • Car maintenance workshop (separate for men and women).
  • Urdu classes
  • Islamic studies GCSE
  • Quran lessons

And most of the events include a lovely free meal.

I'd want to know what the East London Mosque offers women before making a judgement.

greenleafy · 13/10/2025 17:35

Seems alright. I've been to events which are women only, but children (of either sex) are permitted. It's the exact same thing.

Me thinks the OP's shit stirring.

It's fine as long as they organise a separate event for girls/women over 12.

NoSoupForU · 13/10/2025 17:36

Muslim women don't exercise with Muslim men. Religious rights exist, and are allowed for under equality laws.

Women and men only spaces are also allowed to exist. For example, there is a women's only floor at my gym. Whilst some women use the bigger communal space downstairs, I've never seen a muslim woman outside of the women only floor.

Do you not care about women's rights? Or do you only care about some women?

ELO10538 · 13/10/2025 17:22

I assume by "sued" you mean "prosecuted".
If you feel that strongly, make a complaint to the Charity Commissioners and the Police rather than post on MN.

No, she means sued. The Equality Act is civil law, not criminal law. Nothing to do with the police or prosecution.

AInightingale · 13/10/2025 17:37

Absolutely not being unreasonable. Silent acquiescence and compliance now will create bigger problems later on.

Sorry but your comments are beside the point . Doesn’t matter if we’re not Muslim. Doesn’t matter if the Muslim women “don’t mind”. How dare those men disregard the laws of this land. How dare they exclude women over 12. They need to be made to understand UK law in financial terms. I.e. a massive fine. They have millions & can afford it.
I bet our country will be too pathetic and weak and afraid of upsetting people to do anything.

We have women only swimming in our local pool, but little boys are allowed.

Exactly. We are in the UK. A Christian country.

What do you mean by "these men" and "UK laws" and "law of the land". Anyone would think you're racist and viewing Muslims as foreigners 😏

There is a specific exception which makes this lawful (Section 193 (7)):

It is not a contravention of section 29 for a person, in relation to an activity which is carried on for the purpose of promoting or supporting a charity, to restrict participation in the activity to persons of one sex.

The charity could have organised a male only run but there's no lawful mechanism that I can see for what they're doing.

I’m not shit stirring. I’m advocating for Muslim women’s inclusion in a running event instead of just being there to cheer the men and girls under 12 on.
But interested in legal view. If I’m wrong I’ll just have to accept

" it's fine"? How on earth is it fine to discriminate against girls and women in a supposedly inclusive event? Religious organisations don't have the right to pick and choose our laws based on what they decree as ' correct'.

DramaLlamacchiato · 13/10/2025 17:44

This event is discriminating on 3 characteristics:

religion
sex
age

they may be able to justify an event for Muslims or even an event for Muslim males but what would be their justification for the age discrimination as well? That their religion sees females who’ve hit puberty as lesser? Is that likely to be a legitimate justification
