What do you set your heating at?

Please settle an argument with me and my mother.

What do you set your heating at? Is it different in the day and the night?

Just trying to gauge what the 'norm' is here. We are South East (not that that makes any difference - temp is temp).

For me - 20 in the day, 17 at night. My boyfriend (who lives with me) is 22 day, 19 night so its gone up - I wouldn't want him feeling the cold.

My mother thinks a house that is 14 is perfectly reasonable, and not on at all at night. She rarely puts in on. This worries me desperately as father has had pneumonia and they are in their mid 70s. She is convinced I, and 'my generation' are wussies, and heating is bad for you, and they are normal and I 'feel the cold more than most'.

I guess I want to prove to her that that last line is inaccurate, and she puts her bloody heating on this winter, as I am super anxious about their health (particularly my dad). On a selfish note, I loathe going round there as I sit shivering, whilst being given a blanket and told 'oh dear, you do feel the cold don't you'. Like Im some sort of alien. The offer of heating is never there, and when it is put on, it is with much complaint, and mum performance huffing and fanning of brow. Ugh. Drives me nuts.

Why would you have the heating on at night when you are in bed ??

Mantari · 13/10/2025 15:18

Between 18 and about 19.5 in the day and evenings depending on various things. Never on overnight.

Eta: 14 is way too low for an older person, especially with pneumonia!

Allseeingallknowing · 13/10/2025 15:20

Below 16 centigrade you’re at risk of respiratory disease, according to official figures. Our is set at 18 downstairs, 16 upstairs.

dementedpixie · 13/10/2025 15:20

Ours is always off overnight even in winter
When it's properly on (using a timer) it's set around 19/20⁰C
Thermostat is currently at 17⁰C so it's not kicking in that much yet

ImFineItsAllFine · 13/10/2025 15:20

19 in the day and not at all overnight.

OP your parents risk damp and mould (which is massively bad for your lungs) if they really don't run their heating enough, have you tried approaching it that way with them?

Sharptonguedwoman · 13/10/2025 15:22

About 17- 19 deg. Currently for an hour in the mornings and 3 hrs in the evenings.

MoreThanRubies · 13/10/2025 15:22

18 in the day, not at all at night, unless very very cold. And I consider our heating to be on the low/mean side - we’re definitely a wear-a-jumper house. 14 is too low for health reasons.

allmycats · 13/10/2025 15:22

19 daytime and 14 at night. It’s on thermostat and not come on at all yet. In winter we often use the wood burner which heats up to 23/24 and also keeps whole bungalow around 19/20.

I have tried approaching it every which way. And also firm, worried, I sent a huge list with links about dangers. Ended up in a massive fallout last year. Mother mentioned how dad 'nearly died of pneumonia' last year, and I had to bring it up again. Told her how worried and anxious I am. I really felt she heard me. Went round yesterday - it was like an ice box, and no offer of heating for me as a guest.

It is causing me a lot of anxiety tbh.

Off.
My house went down to 9° last winter.

JBJ · 13/10/2025 15:24

17-18 in the day then 10 at night, although it never comes on overnight.

GreenSedan · 13/10/2025 15:25

18 in the day and off at night. I can't sleep in a hot room.

I haven't switched it on at all yet though.

carpedaim · 13/10/2025 15:25

17-19 in the day and off at night.

MoreThanRubies · 13/10/2025 15:25

Adding that my parents in their 70s (very hardy country people!) have a toasty kitchen and log burner in the living room. It’s not a generational thing.

HeddaGarbled · 13/10/2025 15:25

I turn it up when I’m cold and down when I’m hot. Just because it’s set at 20 or whatever, doesn’t mean that’s how warm it feels in different rooms or with different activity levels. It goes off at night on the timer.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 13/10/2025 15:26

18.5 around the clock

User060427 · 13/10/2025 15:27

19 in the day and off overnight from 10pm to 6am.

Justwingingit2005 · 13/10/2025 15:27

We have 20 in day and 17 at night.
My dad is mid 80s and he has it on 20 all the time.

RaraRachael · 13/10/2025 15:27

10 during the day and never on at night. I overheat very easily so don't have it timed to come on in the morning or I'd wake up with a headache.
I just put it on and off when I need it.

amibeingaknob · 13/10/2025 15:28

Thank you everyone.

Im going to show mum this thread. I know that people in their mid-70s should not, and commonly do not, have houses that are 14 and below. She is convinced otherwise.

It sounds from this that regardless of age, and medical condition, people aren't doing that anyway. This will help (I hope!)

off overnight and window is open every single night. I hate a stuffy bedroom.
if I’m in and sitting watching tv/relaxing it’s 18 otherwise 16.
occasionally in the height of winter I put it up to 20 but that’s rare.
if someone is round I make sure to ask if they’re warm enough and will turn it up but it’s straights back down when the go

Surely the temperature in your house never drops below 10, which is danger level?

If I had mine on at 10 it would never come on! The house rarely gets below 12.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/10/2025 15:29

We don’t have it on overnight, the thermostat goes down to 5 at bedtime. Our ‘average’ daytime temp is between 18-21. Above that is unusual for us. 14 is way too low, I feel chilly just thinking about it.

We are holding out until 01 November before turning ours on at all this year. It’s currently 18 in my upstairs office with no heating on.

UrsulaBelle · 13/10/2025 15:29

18 for an hour in the morning and 18 between 4 and 10.30pm. Off the rest of the time. I wear a cardigan and have a fleecy blanket on the sofa. I'm never cold at night under my duvet. 14 would be too cold for me.
