Have you got your heating on yet?
I have just today for the first time.

Of course! Our boiler failed mid-September, so we were really cold until it was replaced last week.
The optimum temperature that has been set is 21 degrees, so we need heat to achieve that.
I don't understand why people wait for a specific date, regardless of temperature. If you're cold, turn it on - don't look at the calendar!

23 degrees is so warm!

Abroad during the summer we set the aircon at 27. It’s a nice temperature.

SepticPegsSepticLeg · 12/10/2025 21:31

Windows open during the day to air out but need the heating on in the evening for a couple of hours. This house is colder inside than outside sometimes.

nellietheellie75 · 12/10/2025 21:31

I've had mine on throughout September. I hate being cold. Currently it's nice and toasty in here. Won't tell you what temp it is😂I'd be like an icicle if it was below 20

Higglea · 12/10/2025 21:32

Yes - go by temp not date

AmIBeingWeird · 12/10/2025 21:32

No it’s currently 21.7 degrees in my bedroom without using any heating at all this autumn

Bloozie · 12/10/2025 21:34

Occasionally. It’s on now. I’m cold…

BetterthanAI · 12/10/2025 21:36

No but don't go by what other people do because if a person has health and / or mobility problems or a baby and it's difficult to get clothes dry after washing them then naturally it makes sense to keep a house fairly warm.

cinquanta · 12/10/2025 21:37

PeonyPatch · 12/10/2025 21:33

😳

But in the UK our central heating thermostat is set at 17.

Pllystyrene · 12/10/2025 21:40

I've been putting ours on for an hour in the morning but we're in an old house and it gets damp and mouldy quickly when it starts to get cold. So it's more on for the houses benefit than ours at the moment.

GreyCloudsLooming · 12/10/2025 21:41

I agree why are people sitting in cold houses

Because it’s not cold at 19 or 18 or 17 degrees… If it hits 15 and I feel cold, then the heating will go on.

Cost.

Pllystyrene · 12/10/2025 21:43

I'll be honest though, I would definitely have the heating on more if I could afford it!

60andcounting · 12/10/2025 21:48

I do understand if someone doesn't put the heating on because of finances, but if you are cold put it on. Why wait til a certain time? If there was a heatwave in February I wouldn't think oh no, the heating isn't going off until March.

Put it on when you're cold and turn it off when you're warm.

GinaandGin · 12/10/2025 21:59

I've had mine on for the past month. I can't stand to be cold . My is set at 24 and I have warm clothes on. I'm really cold sensitive

Heylittlesongbird · 12/10/2025 22:01

It really does depend where you live. We're in a southern county and it doesn't need it. I have had thick bedsocks and winter knitwear on already, but the days seem quite variable, this afternoon was lovely. I did check what temperature the thermostat was clicking at tonight and it's about 18 degrees.

We are away for half-term and my aim is not to put it on until we get back. So a Halloween heating switch on I guess.

I was really crotchety when I went to Tesco's on Friday and dragged my coat out of the cupboard. I'd forgotten how when I bend over the trolley one of the buttons always seems to get caught in between the trolley gaps and I have to detach myself. Yay, another 6 months of this I thought, as I turned my attention fully on my first world problems.

This is what I was referring to earlier. Not everybody copes with heat and cold in the same way.

If my husband was left to his own devices, our thermostat would probably be set at 14. At the other extreme he seems perfectly happy to have the house at 30 during the summer.

needastrongoneagain · 12/10/2025 22:06

This is surely just an individual thing? My husband, due to a significant health condition now needs a warm house as it’s really bad for his joints for him to be cold. I also feel the cold. I’m also vastly in credit on our utility bill. Our house is probably warmer than our neighbours house. I’m honestly not worried about the temperature of his house and I’m sure as hell he gives no shits about the temperature of ours! These threads baffle me 😊

DingDongJingle · 12/10/2025 22:08

My heating is on all year round, set to 18 degrees. Obviously in the summer months it doesn’t come on. When the temperature drops below 18 degrees, it comes on. I never want to be colder than 18 degrees in my house.

Okiedokie123 · 12/10/2025 22:08

Haloween · 12/10/2025 19:59

It was 4 degrees this morning.

Outdoors maybe but not indoors! It’s the indoor temperature that’s relevant imho (because you don’t put on a raincoat to sit in your lounge when it’s raining outside…. If you do need to do that I’m concerned about your roof 😂)
It’s 17c in my house which is a bit of a nip but time for a chunky jumper and cosy socks not the heating. Not yet! Hoovering, exercise, baking are also excellent “I’m not putting the heating on yet” activities.

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 12/10/2025 22:12

I put my heating on when I feel cold, not by the calendar l
If I feel chilly in June it goes on, If I'm warm in December it doesn't.

Dutchhouse14 · 12/10/2025 22:12

God yes!
Also have our open fire going right now

Whatafustercluck · 12/10/2025 22:27

I've had it on a couple of times for a 45 minute boost, when it's felt particularly cold. Haven't needed it on regularly.

Heylittlesongbird · 12/10/2025 22:35

Just for light relief, we visited a stately home today. There was a lovely little room (about the size of my sitting room tbh) which they used to have a fire in and the narrative said it was the only room they could keep warm back in the 50s, so they all settled in there of an evening, then they had to put their overcoats on to leave the room and run upstairs to bed.
