i live in London and we’ve had our heating on since mid September. It’s usually set at 23 degrees but I’ve turned it down a bit for now until it gets colder. I’ve also turned it off at lunchtime a few days.

23 degrees is so warm!

JBJ · 12/10/2025 21:02

Mines on thermostat to come on at 17 degrees between 7.30am and 9pm. It was on when I came down this morning at about 8am, but it was blooming cold last night.

89redballoons · 12/10/2025 21:03

Not yet, though I was just thinking it's a bit chilly and could do with putting it on soon. 9° here in SW, but we had the bathroom window open all afternoon and it's let the cold in.

youalright · 12/10/2025 21:04

Ours turns on automatically if it drops below 20 so been on for about a month now can't believe how many of you haven't had your heating on yet

Zanatdy · 12/10/2025 21:04

No, it’s 24 degrees in my living room today (a flat). Need air con until mid Sep but dismantled it now but been too warm today. Bedroom is more 22.

cinquanta · 12/10/2025 21:05

No central heating on but I lit the fire in the sitting room if that counts.

tulippa · 12/10/2025 21:06

No, not yet. It's 18 degrees in the living room so not needed. I haven't started wearing my thermals yet which is the next step before the heating goes on.

curious79 · 12/10/2025 21:07

I've had a couple of evenings where Ive had it on to take the chill off. But not for hours

HScully · 12/10/2025 21:09

Not yet, I'm in the north, it was 4 degrees this morning. But I was warm enough in bed and just make sure I wear appropriate clothes.

Currently the thermostat says 16.5c Im fine in pyjamas and a dressing gown.

Catwalking · 12/10/2025 21:09

Yep but only 1 by sofa, because our house easily gets damp & only has single glazing (rented). A week or 10days ago had to move my car v. early it was icy! so mines been on a tiny bit since then, house in daft ‘frost pocket’ even tho in S of UK!

23 degrees is so warm!

Not for me! 😆😆

TheeNotoriousPIG · 12/10/2025 21:11

Not yet (NW), and I still have the windows open! However, I have solid shutters, which keep plenty of heat in at night (and the moths out), as I discovered in the year when I lived here with very little heating and hot water (LPG issues).

If I do feel at all cold indoors, a fleece is enough to keep the chill off at the moment.

I suspect that I won't have it on until we're heading towards Christmas. I work outdoors, so I start falling asleep if I'm sat down in any central-heated buildings!

Olive567 · 12/10/2025 21:12

No. It's still 19°C inside without heating and i have the window ajar all the time. I have dug out my woolly dressing gown this evening however.

Financeisfun · 12/10/2025 20:27

My heating is set to 17 when I turn it on. That's my perfect indoor temperature. In the winter months it'll often get down to 12 indoors during the day when I'm working from home. I'm ok at that temperature but thats when the fingerless gloves come out. I hate central heating. It feels stuffy and heavy. I much prefer cooler, fresh air.

You sound like me, this is my ideal.

I feel ill when I go in people's air tight boiling homes in winter

familyissues12345 · 12/10/2025 21:14

No everyday, no. We’ve put it on for an hour a couple of times, just to warm the house a bit, but generally it hasn’t been that cold.

We live in the Home Counties

Philipthecat · 12/10/2025 21:18

No. I wanted to today but have resisted. Hoping to get through the month but I doubt I'll manage it, the temperature has really dropped here (the last of my outdoor tomatoes were lost to frost yesterday).

lazyarse123 · 12/10/2025 21:19

I put ours on for an hour this morning. It was 10 degrees and I had on a thickish nightie, dressing gown and my winter throw. Dh was bemused because I don't usually feel the cold. Then about 2 hours later I'm in a summer dress because the sun came out and warmed everything through.
We live in a park home and the insulation is non existent. Cold in winter, boiling in summer. One good thing is we use bottled gas and so far it's cheaper than piped gas.

Anakan · 12/10/2025 21:22

For me it's not about the time of the year but the temperature. If thermostat below 20, it goes on.

youalright · 12/10/2025 21:22

I agree why are people sitting in cold houses

lazyarse123 · 12/10/2025 21:24

Double post.

Because not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to afford the heating.

Many families have no choice but to save it until the coldest months.

What is cold and what is hot is subjective. Some people’s bodies also seem to struggle to cope with adjusting to warm and cold temperatures.

Or maybe they can’t afford to turn the heating on

GreyChicken · 12/10/2025 21:27

I have the heating set to 17, the heating has automatically come on a few times.

CrushingOnRubies · 12/10/2025 21:28

Yes but the thermostat is set to 21 degrees so it will come in if it dips much below that. Takes the edge off

Which is understandable if thats the actual reason but mumsnet is usually full of high earners but if everyone commenting on this page are struggling to manage their benefits obviously thats different
