Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

@Seaside3 "You're welcome. It's always interesting what people think they know when they haven't really checked."

Having got that little dig in, your day was complete! Did you exhale with satisfaction at a job well done and settle down to a nice cup of tea after?

Rip off you can make it for much less money

I would make my own (and have done in the past), but the price of a big piece of fillet steak to feed six is pretty outrageous to begin with. The other bits are not too expensive, but there is quite a lot of work to make it. A nice turkey for Christmas is really expensive now too.

But what if you really can't be arsed with all the faff of making it yourself? Definitely not a rip off then.

A pub local to me was selling lobster and frites for £95 in the summer, and selling out. I think the OP underestimates the amount people are willing to pay for food to be honest. I agree, £32 per person isn’t expensive; as an alternative going out for Christmas lunch could easily cost £195 a person :)

But that's just 32 pounds for a main course, and only 110g of beef per person at that. Then you've got all the sides, gravy, and dessert, and maybe a starter, and probably wine etc.

latetothefisting · 12/10/2025 11:41

Honestly, I think the Classic Vegetable Selection (Serves 6) | Christmas Food to Order at M&S for £30 is even more of a shocker!

As posters have said, you could argue that decent cut of meat plus filling, and time saved making the filling, pastry, etc explains the cost of the wellington.

But how can you justify the mark up on this! The potatoes are literally JUST potatoes with goosefat and black pepper. Carrot and swede mash = what, one or two carrots, and half a swede, with a splash of cream and nutmeg. Given the supermarkets were selling off whole BAGS of carrots for 9p last year (and in some cases giving them away for free), you're talking of something that it would cost at absolute most 50p to buy all the ingredients - that's a 900% increase!

(based on dividing the £30 equally between the six dishes so £5 each).

Surely there aren't many people out there where the 'prep' of sticking some sort of fat/oil in a try with potatoes is beyond them? Or adding some bacon to a tray of sprouts? Even things like the mash/braised cabbage could be made in advance and then reheated.

Edited

It’s fillet of beef, with porcini mushrooms, chicken, truffles, red wine gravy and hot water pastry, someone needs to buy the ingredients, have the premises fo store them, a chef needs to cook them, they need to be stored again, the order needs ri be taken the product loaded on a cold storage van, someone drives it to the location of the customers choice, someone needs to then store it there, someone needs to fhen man the till and go get it, sell it to the customer.

the fact you can buy two carrots cheaply is quite frankly irrelevant.

Not the point of this thread but it's got me really excited for Christmas.

Also free advertising for M&S, I'm considering the beef Wellington. I try to make them all the time and it never works out quite right. There is also lobster and salmon Wellington in the catalogue that looks fab.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Me too! I have been googling M&S beef Wellington!
I was considering going out for Christmas lunch but that is £100 per head. A very good quality beef Wellington would be cheaper and probably nicer too

What annoys me is it's the only one they offer.
Waitrose has 2 options, one is their No.1 range at £65, the other is a Michael Roux at £95.
The different price points suit everyone, a much better way to do it, while including their own celebrity chef!

It isn't the only one they offer.
They have beef Wellington in store that are cheaper. The £195 price is from their collection Christmas food to order range.
You can get m&s frozen beef Wellington for £60

The M&S Christmas food brochure is food porn marketing at its best! I wouldn't buy the TK version only because I can make my own and it has taken me a few years to master it.

Now you come to mention it... it was wine though.

It was actually a general observation. There's loads of misinformation on this thread and lots of people correcting them. It's not personal!

There's the old joke about clearing your plate because children are starving in Africa and the bemused reply of how does clearing my plate help starving children.

By all means send the money you would have spent on the turkey or beef wellington even, to one of the charities if you want to help, sucking the joy out of Christmas doesn't help at all.

ERthree · 12/10/2025 13:25

ImAPreMadonna · 11/10/2025 16:33

It’s madness.

Agree that no one has buy it but what a lovely way for a supermarket to underscore the ‘haves’ vs the ‘have-nots’. Lovely spirit of Christmas that.

Not everyone can afford a new car but those cruel car show rooms are full of them.

did you actually read my post? Or did you see the word carrot and have some sort of apoplexy?

I literally said exactly what you did...that there is time, effort, expense and skill (plus wide variance in quality of meat) involved in making SOME dishes like the beef wellington thus could be argued justifies the cost, but those elements do not apply to simple dishes like mashed carrot/roasted potatoes....There are only so many ways you can add bacon to a sprout.

i.e. yes, it's irrelevant; aka there's no correlation; aka the same argument doesn't apply = that's exactly the point I was making.

Some posters on here need to go back to Topsy and Tim and re-learn reading comprehension from scratch.

We're also eating out on Christmas Day and won't be getting much change from £550 for the 4 of us

Christ! @Arraminta where are you eating and what are you eating? Does that include booze?

It’s Xmas day, do you expect all the staff to work for normal rates! A three course meal in normal days would cost you 50-60 quid.

people seem to think it’s just about the food and all the staff who work, to make it, store it, serve you it, buy the ingredients, pay for the venue do it for the goodness of their hearts. It’s not a soup kitchen.😂

Yep M&S honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis !

I dont see what that has to do with anything?

Curb all non essential spending until everyone can afford everything?

Garron has waded into the great beef wellington debate. ⚠️ he swears a lot.

Honestly? Food has got really expensive. A very large turkey from our butcher would cost about £120.

Hosting Christmas is expensive and hard work. Inviting a few people to stay over the Christmas period can easily add up to £500 on the online food shop at Waitrose / M&S. It’s part of what makes Christmas stressful.

A few people have mentioned the cost of living crisis. I am not certain that this is a crisis - more that from now on our standard of living is going to be lower. Food is not going to get any cheaper.

Obviously not but @Arraminta is spending nearly £140 pp so I'm curious what you get for that.
