£195 for a beef wellington!

Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

Tone deaf in a cost of living crisis, although their usual customers can most likely well afford them.
Otherwise, watch them get sold off for £1.95 on Christmas Eve when they are stuck with so much excess stock.

Not everyone is struggling right now. People who are won’t be doing their shopping in M&S.

Mookie81 · 12/10/2025 08:09

What annoys me is it's the only one they offer.
Waitrose has 2 options, one is their No.1 range at £65, the other is a Michael Roux at £95.
The different price points suit everyone, a much better way to do it, while including their own celebrity chef!

Just did a quick google.

Sainsbury’s has one for £45 and Morrisons does one for £40.

So there are cheaper options out there…

They are made to order and then delivered to the markies location you chose for collection. Ain’t no one stocking shelves with 200 quid beef wellingtons lol, can’t beleive you thought that. The ones on the shelves will be the 60-85 quid ones. 😂

Exactly M&S Christmas food is ordered online and there's a time limit for placing orders.

Didimum · 12/10/2025 09:05

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:32

Yep M&S honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis !

M&S aren’t a charity.

That’s not an unreasonable price for a fully made, high quality beef wellington for 6.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 12/10/2025 09:09

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/10/2025 08:01

So if it serves six peope that is £32 per person. Not outrageous for something very luxurious and for special occasion.

To see if the price is fair you could cost up the raw ingredients to see how much you could make it for at home.

A pub local to me was selling lobster and frites for £95 in the summer, and selling out. I think the OP underestimates the amount people are willing to pay for food to be honest. I agree, £32 per person isn’t expensive; as an alternative going out for Christmas lunch could easily cost £195 a person :)

APTPT · 12/10/2025 09:09

These "chef-made to order ones from limited stock"... lmao.

You are the people that Del Boy was selling boeuf bourgignon to.

Hohumdedum · 12/10/2025 09:09

If the meat is amazing quality I think it's worth it.

The best quality steaks I've ever had have been a completely different experience to a bog standard cheap one.

INCLUDING THE TAIL! Omg, that sounds YUCK!🤢

Sorry, reading that brought out my inner teen. What on earth do you do with a cow's tail???

It’s not the actual tail of the animal - it’s a term that refers to the narrow end of the fillet.

namechange3005 · 12/10/2025 09:34

I couldn’t get worked up over this 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shops sell things at different prices, to cater for people who want to spend that kind of money. A wellington costing £200 when the cheapest option is £60, is like a shop having a £6 bottle of wine and then a £20 bottle of wine. And there’s definitely wine at a higher price than that!

SpottyAardvark · 11/10/2025 17:33

Good grief, no wonder M & S are going down the shitter charging prices like this!

They’re not. Far from it, in fact. M&S has been turned round by the current management and is now extremely successful again, particularly their food business which is growing & expanding further & faster than ever. They know exactly who their customers are, and exactly what they want. Their massive, showpiece store at Fosse Park near Leicester is unbelievably busy, and has been since it fully re-opened last year.

Edited

I was about to comment with exactly the same thing. You can't move in that store in the food bit, regardless of what time you go. It's the busiest place in the whole of Fosse Park. No evidence of a COL crisis there.

They have at least 3 options, starting at 60 quid, then 85, what are you on about. 😂

Calm down, no need to be snippy.
I was on their Xmas food to order page, I only saw the one!

I had to look it up because I thought you were joking but no they are seriously have the nerve to ask that much for it. For that price I would want Tom Kerridge to cook it for me. Do people really have that much to spend on just one meal?

What a daft question! Of course some people have that much to spend on just one meal.

Some people will spend that much on a Christmas tree. Some people will get down a battered old one out of the loft.

I drive a 10 year old Skoda but see people driving around in brand new Mercedes or Porsches. I don't get morally offended or deeply confused as to how they can have an expensive new car when I have an ordinary older one.

I wouldn't spend £200 on a glorified M&S ready meal either but why can't people on Mumsnet ever imagine other people beyond their own income bracket or social circle? It baffles me!

ExtraOnions · 12/10/2025 11:09

I’m thinking of getting it .. I didn’t have a summer holiday due to family reasons, and I’ve got some backpay coming. We are finishing the year £11k up overall, so have decided on an “extravagant Christmas”. I don’t feel the need to apologise, we generally lead a fairly modest life .. never felt the need to chase the big house & big car, Mortgage free at 50.

My point being, we all make different choices - some people spend £180 on Ballyage (sp), or a pair of shoes — good for them, it’s not for me, but so what.

When we were growing up we didn’t have a pot to piss in, bailiffs round, electric cut off etc.

roundsquares · 12/10/2025 11:13

I saw this when I did my order yesterday.

I didn’t think much of it, to be honest. I’ve never tried Beef Wellington but it looks right up my street so if there was one that served 2 or 4, I would have been tempted. We have no need for something that serves 6. I wouldn’t attempt making it myself as I’m not a super confident cook and I’d get flustered with the steps taken and wouldn’t want to mess up an expensive cut of beef.

I don’t think it’s as ridiculous as a lot of people have made out but it’s a decent, “luxury” option for those who want it.

The same can be said for many things, whiskies etc. My husband likes nice whiskey, I despise it. He’d spent £££ on a bottle as a treat, I wouldn’t spend £10 on one for myself.

Honestly, I think the Classic Vegetable Selection (Serves 6) | Christmas Food to Order at M&S for £30 is even more of a shocker!

As posters have said, you could argue that decent cut of meat plus filling, and time saved making the filling, pastry, etc explains the cost of the wellington.

But how can you justify the mark up on this! The potatoes are literally JUST potatoes with goosefat and black pepper. Carrot and swede mash = what, one or two carrots, and half a swede, with a splash of cream and nutmeg. Given the supermarkets were selling off whole BAGS of carrots for 9p last year (and in some cases giving them away for free), you're talking of something that it would cost at absolute most 50p to buy all the ingredients - that's a 900% increase!

(based on dividing the £30 equally between the six dishes so £5 each).

Surely there aren't many people out there where the 'prep' of sticking some sort of fat/oil in a try with potatoes is beyond them? Or adding some bacon to a tray of sprouts? Even things like the mash/braised cabbage could be made in advance and then reheated.

One or two carrots aren’t going to feed six people but putting that aside why get so antsy. Some people don’t want to peel and prep veg. They just want to bung it in the oven.

This gives them the option.

You (and I) will prep the veg and my roast potatoes will be better than those. But there will be other things we’ll both spend money on that the veg buyers wouldn’t.

I agree, but probably not quite as cheaply. £7.50 spent on veg.

I watched it recently. Mike appears with two identical plates of brown slop. "Here's your stew, Denzil. That's a pound." Goes and smiles at some other customer, handing him the plate. "Beouf bourguignon? Two pound fifty."

Bobnobob · 12/10/2025 12:35

Handmade and responsibly sourced with everyone involved in the chain getting a fair price? If there are people out there who can afford it then I’m happy for it to be sold at that price. It won’t be sold to me! If I want a beef wellington I will pay the Tesco price for the ingredients and make it myself.
