“Alot”

Appreciate I’ll be called all the arseholes for this one. But I am actually interested.

I see this constantly. On here. In real life. On another thread, there is an apparent “commercial lawyer” using it.

Why? Where does it come from? How are people looking at “alot” and thinking it’s a word? Aren’t you having to fight the autocorrect to use it? I did. It autocorrected my title more than once.

So. If you use “alot” - why?

People grow them in their alotments

To make a matching set with “abit”.

I saw 'afew' on here the other day!

It’s bad but not as bad as noone.

My phone auto corrects a lot to alot. I have to look out for it & correct it back!

It’s up there with “his” rather than “he’s”

If I want to type "were" my phone autocorrects it to "we're"

So annoying

People don't always hit the space button accurately.

I don't use alot but quite like "abit." Sorry 😊

A large number of people are thick and lazy as shit and have no intention of trying to improve their spelling.

On here you see it all, so many people who don't know the difference between "their", "there" and "they're", use apostrophes in the wrong place, use "loose" when they mean "lose", and use "his" for "he's". So "alot" just adds to their demonstrations of stupidity.

I find it bizarre because my grandchild knew how to spell all those words correctly at primary school.

As you say, autocorrect flags it up so people must just ignore that.

@Buxusmortus I was guilty of using alot, it wasn't until spell checker that I realised I had been writing it wrong. However some words I write spell check autocorrects wrongly like were and there.

Ect ect ect ect is my most hated.
Brings ectoplasm to mind.

'Que' is also used often when people mean 'cue'.

It was my Secondary school English teacher's pet peeve. I like it alot though.

It's wrong but people's spelling, grammar and punctuation are shocking nowadays.
You see - alot, incase, thankyou (when used as a verb).
"A huge thankyou to John" - is fine
"Thankyou very much" - is wrong because it's a verb. It should be - "Thank you very much".
