Can anyone advise….is buying a Title plan from the gov website anonymous?

My sisters boyfriend is the most dodgy person I have ever known in my entire life.

He says he owns a property. I don’t believe for a second that he does.

I want to buy the £7 title plan from the gov website to find out life information about this property.

I just want to know if whoever owns the house could possibly
find out that I’ve done so? If they can, would my information be shown?

I need to be careful as this guy is potentially dangerous, while I’m pretty certain he doesn’t own the house, he will know the owners so I just want to cover my back.

Thank you

AFAIK when you buy those sorts of documents from the government, along with things like birth certificates or wills, the people concerned are not notified. They are public records which anyone can access for a lot of different reasons.

Seems a bit extreme though. What are you going to do with the information if you are proved right and your sister doesn't care?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/10/2025 09:42

Anonymous unless you have set alerts.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 09/10/2025 09:42

I bought the title plan for ours and a neighbors property as we couldn't place the one for ours. its in my husbands name and he didn't get any contact saying I had paid for a copy. I kept my name from before we married so the applicant was a different name to the owner and still nothing.... did find out our neighbor was parking on part of our garden and gaslighting us to believe it was theirs....whole other thread.

do you have any friends you could get to buy it for you to keep your peace of mind?

HangryBrickShark · 09/10/2025 09:43

It is completely anonymous i believe

Mywindow · 09/10/2025 09:44

And what will you do when you get the info?

and even if your sister does listen and end it (she won’t), there’ll be another dodgy as fu@k man waiting to take over.

you need to focus squarely on your sister and her issues that make her so vulnerable and gullible

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/10/2025 09:42

Anonymous unless you have set alerts.

I believe you can only set alerts as to someone trying to amend the title, not just download a copy of the plan.

Mywindow · 09/10/2025 09:46

say he has fibbed about this
is it really a deal breaker? To be showing off to your girlfriend? I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s a pathetic and silly but hardly the need of the world.

This man has borrowed over 15k from my parents for this ‘house’ to renovate it. It’s not pathetic or silly at all. You have absolutely no idea what this man is putting my family through.

Again

your your focus then needs to be on your parents who you seem to think are gullible and vulnerable

Suffolkposy · 09/10/2025 09:55

It’s anonymous, I have an alert set for my house in case anyone tries to amend the title etc. I recently had to download the title because my neighbour was being a dick about the boundary and nothing was flagged to me about it being ordered or downloaded. So go for it, hope you get your answers.

GloryFades · 09/10/2025 09:56

Even if there’s alerts you don’t see when someone just downloads the title - it’s just if someone tried to change it or register a charge. I have alerts in my property, did not get a notification when I downloaded the docs from a different account or when my solicitor presumably accessed them for the remortgage.

It’s not anonymous as the land registry will know you’ve ordered it, but there’s no way for the property owner to know anyone has downloaded it. I’ve downloaded loads over time for nosiness reasons, including family members…

I agree with what you're doing. As others have said, the search is anonymous

Have you done a Clares Law search too?

It's anonymous if you use an anonymous email address etc?

I’ve done it, he doesn’t own it as suspected. I don’t actually think he knows the man who owns it either.

clares law is my next step. I don’t think he is violent, he’s actually extremely shy and doesn’t say much but I know from personal experience that means nothing.

I need to gather as much information as I can at the moment.

You have to put your card details to pay for it? Which are in your name presumably?

If you went out of your way to get a nameless prepaid debit card maybe that would work, if that’s a thing?

DiscoBob · 09/10/2025 10:15

Whether he owns the house or not he's got their money. The house ownership or lack of won't change that fact. They won't be any more or less likely to get it back if he's dodgy he probably just wouldn't pay them back regardless.

@Mywindow if OP can get hard evidence that the man is a liar, it’ll be a easier for her to persuade her family that he shouldn’t be trusted.

@DiscoBob but now OP has proof of his lie, she can hopefully ensure her parents don’t give him any more money.

daisyflowersx · 09/10/2025 10:44

There’s absolutely no chance my parents are going to get their money back. They both know that.

There is a hell of a lot more to this story, I wouldn't even know where to start. He has conned every single member of my family in some way - myself included.

my next step is to go to the police and is truly believe my mum could be in danger

BumpyWinds · 09/10/2025 10:57

I was going to say the same as others here.

Completely anonymous (even with alerts - that doesn't tell someone if a document has been downloaded - just if someone is trying to change something).

I agree that you should do a Clare's Law application. They won't tell you anything, but if there is anything to report, they will contact your sister. They also won't disclose who made the application.

Just because someone isn't violent, it doesn't mean that they aren't controlling or abusive in other ways.

Chillychock · 09/10/2025 13:51

I suspect to people like your sister and parents OP, you could go to them with a dozen files of evidence against him and they’ll look at you blankly and say “but he’s lovely, what are you going on about @daisyflowersx

Yeah there is that. What a horrible situation. What an arsehole he is.
