Edinburgh Waverley station needs me.

Here are the facts:

  • I go to many train stations, I never ever get confused elsewhere.
  • I never go to Waverley without walking round in a big loop in a state of confusion.
  • From observation I am not the only one.

I am prepared to provide executive advice. Payment terms are a baguette from upper crust, a bag of percy pigs from M&S and some scottish fudge from, well, somewhere that sells good fudge.

This is not actually an AIBU, because I am not being unreasonable. I am on a train leaving Edinburgh having finally found my platform. See you next time for the same fun again Waverley!

Nope. Say you board a train at Haymarket. If the train is going out of Edinburgh, you're less likely to get a seat, although it's not impossible. If the train is going into Edinburgh, you can sit down for a maximum of four minutes before you arrive at... Waverley.

So a train that goes through Haymarket never goes beyond Waverley. That is a good fact, I didn’t know that. Ok, I’ll grant you that the seat advantage is therefore limited.

It reminds me of a no go zone like a robovac has. Must not breach the boundary!

To be fair, Waverley is a combination of Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central. Queen Street trains go north and east, Central goes south and east.
Waverley covers north, south and west, it therefore has many more platforms.
I’ll get my anorak ….

😂

TheNightingalesStarling · 08/10/2025 22:24

Wavelet is just a representation of the sheer complexity of Edinburgh though. DH says you need to be careful when ordering an user that its not sending one to the point 10m above your head on a different road...

I have never seen wacky hat man! Do you have to show a certain level of puzzlement before he appears?

Either that or he is on platform 13.

i have travelled to and from Waverley many, many times and I have never seen him either.

BoredZelda · 08/10/2025 22:27

I got off the train at Waverley and could see the next train I was getting on. It was literally 10 seconds walk away. It took me 5 minutes to get there because you had to go aaaaaaaaaalllllll the way along the platform, right down to the bottom, turn back on yourself and walk aaaaallllllll the way back. Then across and down and round and turn 3 times and howl al the moon.

I only just got on it, and even then I had to beg and plead, despite the people on the first train claiming they have phone in our delay and the trains would wait a few minutes.

I hate it with a vengeance.

Excellent! 👌🏻

I don't find it too bad now, but only tend to use the easy platforms. Platform 7 is an arse though...and it's always the one your train goes from when you're running late, and have too much luggage, a potted plant, 7 bags of percy pigs and a coffee. They make you walk half the way down to holyrood before letting you get on the train.

I recommend the magic secret exit that brings you out by John lewis. To avoid the hell that is waverley steps and the north bridge junction. Obviously only of any use if you want to go to John lewis.

Shhhh, let us not talk of that entrance...it's the one I always use (easiest to get to from my end of town) and I quite like not having to brave the madness that is Princes St. 🤐

Namechanged555 · 08/10/2025 22:33

This is hilarious. I think it is because i get lost wherever I am. I love that in Waverley everyone else is the same :-)

GoBazGo · 08/10/2025 22:33

Does anyone know the usual platform for trains to Preston (Great Western)? And landmarks to look for? TA.

@TallOrLong

Once you’ve got Waverley ship-shape (love that station, mainly for the Wetherspoon’s), please will you come and sort out Leeds Railway Station?

Sorry, I forgot about the Aberdeen/Dundee to London trains. They definitely go from Haymarket to Waverley then beyond. I think.

GoBazGo · 08/10/2025 22:40

I’ll keep an eye out. Is Wacky Hat Man a poster or a person who frequents EW? Sorry can’t remember all posters names.

That is actually the perfect explanation!

HGC2 · 08/10/2025 22:46

I usually depart from one of the hidden away platforms or the one you have to jog to the end for, imagine m confusion when yesterdays train left simply from a main platform by pret!

ThatCalmFinch · 08/10/2025 22:47

Never had a problem with Waverley, nor Gare du Nord, nor St P but attempting to find my out of Paddington underground to exit in the main station has been traumatic. I also ended up walking in a circle for 20 minutes last week trying to find my way south to the river from Bank/Monument station - all exits from both stations seem to lead to each other.

Op will you consider expanding your role to cover confusing London underground stations?

Leeds is the GOLD STANDARD. Well in terms of logical, consistent ordering of platforms.

I agree there is work to be done on the pain of thinking you are at adjacent platforms but not factoring the need to ascend and descend Everest in order to make your 2 minute connection.

Also the longest platforms ever, I’ll also agree 11a and 11b does not make it clear they are in different timezones.

I think the issues in Leeds are beyond signage, they are not going to be solved by some percy pigs and a marker pen.

venusandmars · 08/10/2025 22:49

Absoloutely. I travel every few weeks on the main train Edinburgh to Glasgow. Today it went from platform 10.

Platform 10 was closed.

It actually went from p9, temporarily renamed as p10!!

MoltenLasagne · 08/10/2025 22:51

I once took nearly 15 minutes to find platform 18, and was terrified I was going to miss my train, only for them to announce it was delayed for 30 minutes when I got there. I could have got the next train from a different platform but decided it wasn't worth it and stayed put.

Glad to see they're planning on making it more confusing - maybe suggest taking inspiration from New Street and adding random glass walls to stop you walking into the next zone...

I get this train sometimes so negative marks to me for not realising! The robovac has escaped the boundary after all!

Use Waverley often and have done for years. In fact, will be there this weekend en route to London. I find it ok apart from the up/over/down bits. And the waiting room has a lovely ceiling.

I remember when you drove in down the ramp and actually parked in the station!
Now I have to lurk outside opposite Brewhemia and get shouted at by taxi drivers.

To previous posters regarding Haymarket...

The phrase 'getting off at Haymarket' is akin to withdrawal (pulling out early). Well at least it was in my school girl days!
