To feel like the tide of public opinion has turned against the pro-palestine protestors

JKLolling · 07/10/2025 21:36

Every social media feed I have is full of irate people commenting on pro-gaza protestors.

From people commenting on Greta Thunberg sharing the picture of the starving hostage and claiming it was a Palestinian (wtf was she thinking?!) , to the student saying Israelis should 'go back where they came from', there are thousands of angry comments. Lots of the protestors hiding their faces too, and on a local Uni group people are trying to name the protestors seen today and get them removed from their courses

I'm disgusted with what I've seen today, and it feels like the tide is turning and people are seeing these protests for what they really are: an opportunity for hate-filled morons to get together and intimidate people. I feel like they've completely ruined their cause just because they couldn't wait a day to protest.

Mumsnet is genuinely one of the most extreme places on the internet/social media to be honest and the tide is very much anti Israel. Most people who are not extremely biased or quite racist can see that what Israel has done is one of the most heinous things in our lifetime - more uniquely so because our government has backed them to do it. Any kind of concept that liberal democracy type values are superior has been destroyed. I’ve seen people I would never have imagined be so anti Israel and angry at what they have seen. You’re probably looking at your own echo chamber - most people worldwide are outraged. Most people admire the bravery of Greta and the flotilla. Most people would read your post and be quite disgusted. But not on mumsnet.

Have you considered that MN is one of the very few places on the internet where you cannot curate what you see? Where content isn't fed to you by an algorithm to present you with stuff you agree with? Where you don't follow friends and see their content first?

People need to think before posting 'everyone on my social media agrees with me'.

Planning to protest on October 7th, following through after the Yom Kippur murders in Manchester, marching with faces covered….

It sure looks more like antisemitism than it does a peace protest.

Also not sure how protesting in London helps. UK has already decided to recognise Palestine as a state. What do they expect Khan or Starmer to do? What does it do other than frighten and harrass our domestic Jewish population?

I expect them to sanction Israel, put pressure on Netanyahu to stop the bombing, declare a genocide, publicly support the arrest of Netanyahu and halt all arms sales to Israel.

That goes both ways, no?

on the CITME threads you really do see the split of peoples opinions. But the difference is, it’s about the same five posters who are incredibly pro-Israel. It’s very different posters each time who are anti-genocide.

Oh I don't doubt that there's widespread condemnation of Israel because what they are doing is objectively awful.

But 'everyone I know thinks Greta is brave and the flotilla is marvellous' is definitely a feature of the algorithm.

I could pop on Twitter now and find you lots of people who think that Greta is a tit and should have stuck to climate change campaigning. I could find you lots of people circulating the fact that she posted a picture of a starving Israeli hostage thinking it was a Palestinian prisoner. Lots of posts about the arrest of a Holocaust denying member of the flotilla who was arrested on arrival back in the UK.

I am not basing it on my friends etc. I am basing it on the media landscape, on worldwide opinion, on the millions who turned out all over the world, on polls on British opinion, on the fact that people have seen starving and blown up babies and that there is the biggest amputee population in the world and also on the fact that the UN and every single charity on the ground and genocide experts have said there is a literal GENOCIDE. Most normal people realise that the feelings and opinions of a few who are not outraged and disgusted by this are irrelevant.

So no, the tide is not turning against normal people who protest this depravity. And frankly if your feelings of discomfort are trying to dictate to others not to protest the genocide then seriously ask yourself why you are so depraved and soulless? One day you will Be ashamed of your views and if you did it publicly it will come back and haunt you.

Yes, but those opinions tend to be based on misogyny. So it’s quite easy to write them off as stupidity.

SumUp · 08/10/2025 01:55

Yes, I hope that the majority hold more nuanced positions.

Police forces should be freed up to protect the UK’s Jewish community, not diverted to protesters who will achieve nothing positive for suffering Palestinians.

It’s very unfortunate that the resources to these two groups are in direct competition. They are two very separate issues - British Jews have nothing to do with what is happening in Palestine, saying one group is more important than the other suggests the police get political with their resources.

On other threads about this topic the pro-Israeli posters have been very open in saying that they believe some human lives have more value than others.

So to summarise ..
Mumsnet is full of extremists and/or racists, Israel is the worst country in the world (??), it's all the UKs fault, liberal democracy is finished and everybody thinks Greta and the futilla are the bravest thing ever.....

Meh...not really, and your post sounds sinister.

Who said that and what did they say?

EasternStandard · 08/10/2025 07:55

Generally the conflict has roused awful feelings against Jewish people. I’m listening to a father talk about a Dr who tweeted about supremacy etc for vulnerable patients. Really terrible stuff.

Father is Brian Leveson, Times Radio

The difference between people like you, and most other people, is that most people can see both sides have suffered. The Israeli people lost 1200 of their family, friends and community in a brutal, unprovoked, slaughter - many were kidnapped and treated horrendously, some for years. Some died in captivity.

You can only empathise with Palestinians. You aren’t recognising the hurt on both sides. The cruelty on both sides. To not empathise with Israelis for what happened on 7th October is cold and concerning.

People SHOULD empathise with Israelis. As they should Palestinians.

Stop talking about “Israel” as it all Israelis wanted to get involved in a war was Palestinians. I’m pretty sure the majority are very sad it’s come to this.

The bias is unreal.

The thing is, of course we empathise with Israelis. 7/10 was awful.

But it is not a justification for what has happened since.

soupyspoon · 08/10/2025 08:07

Israel was victim to a major terrorist attack by an organisation and people who want to decimate them.

Decisions they have since made about the strategies they've used in war have been extreme and in some cases criminal, hence the legal implications that are likely to follow once this is all over

They were and continue to be at threat of decimation by Hamas and followers of Hamas, and Im still looking for evidence that Gazans dont support Hamas.

The Arab states around Gaza dont seem to support Hamas funny enough.

HappyGolmore2 · 08/10/2025 08:10

Your feed is showing you what you want to see, based on the words you search for. Start searching positive key words around the rise in condemnation of the genocide and growing protests and you'll see that you're stuck in your news bubble.

JKLolling · 07/10/2025 22:48

Really strange that I've started a thread on the disgusting behaviour of protesters who are acting this way in public and on camera because I dislike it and have noticed that they are being widely condemned and disparaged in a way that wouldn't have happened even a couple of months ago?

Sadly no foreign government paid me for this post (would have been nice with Christmas coming though)

It’s called an algorithm. You’re in an echo chamber.
Support is still strong for Palestine.

Teathecolourofcreosote · 08/10/2025 08:15

I have never understood why they aren't stop the war or peace marches.

That I could support. But chanting 'from the river to the sea' is to support more genocide.

Yes within that there is recognition for Palestine and a two state system. But that isn't what those chants mean.

There's also very little criticism that those making decisions for Hamas are doing so from a different country in luxury. How can that ever be right? To continue to subject your people to a horrific life while in your luxury apartment in Qatar? Is this not part of the problem with any peace deal?

The minimising of October 7 upsets me. Oh it's not that bad because more Palestinians have been killed. It was a horrific act and the taking of hostages was deliberate as a negotiation tactic for war.

Of course there have been negative actions from Israel before this which deserve to be called out but nothing can ever justify what was done on October 7 - it was planned and coordinated with knowledge of what it would bring. The Palestinian people deserve to be free of hamas and I fail to see how people chanting their support for Hamas in London is really helping them. Rather it emboldens a terrorist organisation prepared to use civilians as human shields.

Are whipped into this kind of frenzy by any other war, like Sudan, Yemen, or the massacres of Druze and Nigerian Christians by any chance?

I bet not.

What particularly stands out for you in this war that you think you can judge other people for not agreeing with your views?

I don’t think it’s a genocide btw (in what genocide were civilians warned to evacuate and the enemy facilitated aid?) and think the protestors on our streets are a bunch of deranged Jew hating morons with nothing better to do.

Im not ashamed.

I don’t think the tide is turning. Lots of pro-Israeli propaganda and money flowing into social media and forums to try to drown out the truth and give the illusion of a change in tide? Yeah, that’s happening. All over mumsnet at the minute. Strange, isn’t it? There’s multiple subtle pro-Israeli threads daily at the minute. Really strange.

Well at the moment out if 400 votes 57% agree, so not exactly the same 5 people is it.

It's a bit like the trans issue: 'everyone agrees transwomen are women' errrr no they don't, most people are just terrified of saying anything because of the vocal nutters terrorising everyone else.

Did they ever have majority popular support?

Great to see cancel culture alive and well though- express a perfectly legal opinion and we will have you removed from your Uni course. Because that can only ever be used by one side, and the worm of public opinion definitely isn't fickle and can't turn at any moment. 🙄
