To be utterly disgusted by the woman cutting down yellow ribbons commemorating the October 7th victims in Muswell Hill yesterday morning

When Jewish people are being attacked and murdered on their way to synagogue on Yom Kippur

When you literally can’t move or look in any direction without Palestine Palestine Palestine in our faces

On the eve of the anniversary of the worst atrocity committed against Jewish people since the Holocaust, a small, unobtrusive memorial for the victims of that unthinkable, barbaric attack was destroyed yesterday by a despicable woman who turned up with scissors and cut the ribbons down, one by one.

Ribbons for women and girls who were raped and murdered.
Ribbons for babies ripped from their parents’ arms and slaughtered.
Ribbons for men beaten to death.
Ribbons for the hostages still suffering every moment.

And this disgusting individual took it upon herself to come along with a pair of scissors and cut each one away. Her excuse? They “condone genocide”.

Let’s not pretend for a moment that that was her true motivation. It was a revolting demonstration of the antisemitism that has become so shamefully rife in this country that it sickens me.

This woman needs to be named and shamed for the loathsome person she is.

Israel don’t intend to allow a two state solution.

Really? I think you are wrong. Israel will support a peace plan. As we will see in the coming days I imagine.

Hamas it’s fair to say are not keen on a two state solution. They would rather ‘wipe every Jew from the planet’ so it’s probably not going to be with a Hamas government is it.

Given that you disregard the centuries of Jewish settlements in the region, and reduce an entire country down to ‘settler’ status - as if they can just be moved on at some point, it doesn’t sound to me like you have any intention of supporting long term peace.

What is your solution then? Assuming you don’t just want a continuation of mass causalities indefinitely.

Gosh where are you? I'd love to see some F* Hamas stickers. Totally opposite to what I'm surrounded by every single day. Swastikas and pro-intifada stickers everywhere here.

(Appreciate I'm a massive minority but I've never felt this more than now and it's intriguing to learn that there's somewhere where I'd feel less lonely)

Same.

They aren’t separate that’s why. You are supporting a known terrorist organisation.

If you genuinely care about the people of Palestine as I do, give to charity. Sponsor the rebuilding. Get behind the peace plan so more lives will be saved. Don’t stand and scream racist slogans. Simple really.

Of course they are.
There are children, with limbs blown off. Mothers who can't feed their children. And you cannot see them as separate people from adult male terrorists? Really?

It's exactly this way of thinking that leads to people cutting yellow ribbons for innocent victims.

You've donated to Palestinian charities? Which ones?

I live in an area with loads of ribbons and posters and it has been relentless these past 2 years - every time they are removed more appear in their place. In another nearby area they stickered and graffitied an entire shop front because the flat above it had a palestine flag. Have a memorial in your houses and places of worship. You cant turn the entire street into a political statement, it's an area shared by people of all backgrounds and no group is more important than another. And it is indeed a political statement - why must we be reminded every single day of an attack that happened 2 years ago, while Israel kills, kidnaps and maims thousands every week?

I also live in an area where these ribbons are absolutely everywhere. Every gap on every street railing, every lamppost, everywhere it can be attached, or alternatively yellow ribbon stickers all over post boxes and walls. Locally, the ribbon has been extended to show a support of Israel rather than a support for the hostages, so it’s lost its meaning.

Any house or business that has a pro-Palestine flag in their own property is named and shamed on local Facebook groups and several have been vandalised and businesses boycotted, but these ribbons are just as political and they have been left up with my local authority unable to bring them down as it gets bombarded with claims of anti-semitism.

That said, if that lady pulled down those ribbons today, then that was highly insensitive of her. Regardless of personal views, a day remembering those lost and taken is not the day to stage a protest.

I won’t engage because you have said the innocent Palestinians are Hamas, and you’ve made up some long argument of what I’ve apparently said when I havent.

FWIW I want to see Hamas removed, Gaza rebuilt and Israeli withdrawal from both Gaza and the West Bank. I’d also like to see Israel curtailed in their attacks on other nations in the surrounding region.

Winederlust · 07/10/2025 12:53

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 07/10/2025 11:56

Tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians are dead, many more starving, many more disabled, whole cities flattened, infrastructure destroyed... and yet Hamas still exists. Slow hand clap for the Israeli govt.

I don't think the argument here is that Israel is justified in its continued attacks until hamas no longer exists.

But if Israel ceased fire tomorrow (which it absolutely should btw) that won't put a stop to the tensions. The conflict will still exist while Hamas still exists.

AhWeNoss · 07/10/2025 12:53

Pretty sure it was Israel that broke the last ceasefire…

I'm pleased that the real motives of the pro Palestine movement are becoming obvious to everyone

Sorry? The motives other than 'stop this sickening genocide, and the slaughter of thousands upon thousands of women and children'?

After the Hamas mass murder, yes.

VisitationRights · 07/10/2025 12:55

She is an awful human being.

And for the person uncomfortable with stickers, Fuck Hamas, they are a terrorist organisation and anyone supporting them does not reflect British values so I don’t care if someone is offended by those stickers.

On 18 March of this year? Really? I must have missed the mass murder that caused Israel to break the ceasefire.

What an awful thing to say. Where as I dont agree with cutting the ribbons down maybe you should spare a thought to the children with no parents or no arms or the dead children, women and men who have been killed .Jewish ppl are not the only group who suffer hate. Ask the black community what they suffer, women, shall I go on? Muslims are also suffering hate right now but im sure you would be silent here. the world isnt about a ribbon. Its about peace for everyone.
The Israeli government and settlers have been abusing the Palestinians for many many years but you're up in arms about one person cutting some ribbons. Both sides need homes and somewhere safe to live, the Israeli government have been illegally occupying gaza and Both hamas and the Israeli government are vile and disgusting. Its all vile from both sides and has to stop.

It’s ribbons tied to a fence. If you find a memorial for the victims of that awful attack so troublesome you really need to take a good hard look at yourself.

Does the 9/11 memorial bother you too? How about the 7/7 Memorial in Hyde Park? Do you look at those and forget about the victims of those attacks and instead anguish over the plight of the civilians of Iraq and Afghanistan who died as a result of the resulting war and retaliatory attacks? Or do you save that self righteous morality policing for Israel?

Why?

I think what she did is disgraceful and no memorial should be defaced in that way.

All loss of civilian life due to war is a tragedy, however, the loss of civilian life after 9/11 is nowhere near as disproportionate as what is happening in Gaza.

There were an estimated 432,000 civilian deaths across Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries as a direct result of the war on terror over 20 years - less than 0.5% of the population of Iraq and Afghanistan alone.

An estimated 67,160 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza - 3.2% of the population. As a proportion of population that is six times more than were killed in the Iraq and Afghani wars and has taken place over 2 years and not 20!

There were also no British, American or other coalition politicians calling for the forcible displacement of the entire Iraqi and Afghani populations, so the two really aren't comparable!

Lou802 · 07/10/2025 13:01

Both sides have behaved hideously, both sides want to be rid of the other side , both sides want things their own way, both sides excuse the things they do, both sides only want a peace deal if it hugely favours them.

Honestly they have more in common than they realise!

Cutting down the ribbons is inappropriate but sometimes these things become too big and start to take a nasty tone, not sure if that is the case here. Personally i don't really like these memorials that are just basically going to become litter. Why not plant some flowers in memory?
