To be concerned about my neighbours?

My neighbours are a young couple with a toddler. I normally seem them but I haven’t for 3 days now. All their lights and curtains hahe been drawn but their cars are still on the drive and haven’t moved. Or am I over thinking? It just seems a bit unusual. We are rural and you can’t really get to anywhere without a car, not even local shop. Also they’re not abroad or anything, as I actually spoke to the lady neighbour the other day and she said someone from the council was meant to be coming round

Couldn’t hear any noise or the dog. It’s just strange because their living room window can be seen from my landing. And the light is always on at night. And it isn’t. Perhaps they are abroad, but they didn’t mention it. Any holidays in the past they have let me know when I’ve seen them, just so I can keep an eye out on their house

But you still haven't requested a welfare check? Surely there have been enough posters with negative experiences of missing/deceased neighbors and relatives to convince you to do that?

TicklishMauveSquid · 07/10/2025 19:21

Kind of changes things if landing light is normally on at night but now isn’t as it indicates they’ve gone away, although if it was a last minute trip that they didn’t ask you to keep an eye out on the house for, it begs the question of where’s the dog as a taxi wouldn’t take a dog, I’d have thought, and their cars are still there. Family could have picked them up though.

Did they ever mention family in the area?

I would err on the side of caution and call the police for a welfare check anyway. They know what to look for and can gain entry without causing too much damage hopefully. Family may be annoyed but I couldn’t have a potentially tragic outcome on my conscience, although it’s probably past that stage.

Do you know the full names of the couple to look them up on social media or any friends of theirs that they link to before doing that?

If you don’t know, you could check the land registry website and get the title info of the house which will give the name of the owner/s. Costs about £3 I think.

If it’s a council property, I would have rung the council today and asked for a housing officer to check.

No, the curtains have stayed drawn. And no lights on at all, for 3 nights

It is not unreasonable to ask the police to do a welfare check.

TicklishMauveSquid · 07/10/2025 19:28

Sorry just seen it was the living room light that’s on at night, not the landing (ours is always on all night for DC but we wouldn’t leave it on while away).

So you will have seen that because they had it on in the lounge in the evening.

So there is a possibility that they turned off light before going to bed and have not been downstairs since the last night you saw them then.

I’d definitely call police and ask for a welfare check quite urgently.

I would be calling the police and social services and hammering on the door, you cant be too sure nowadays as lots of crazies about.

vitahelp · 07/10/2025 19:40

I’d have called the police by now. I live rurally too and feel quite protective of neighbours since we are quite isolated. I would be worried about carbon monoxide poisoning.

tartanhaggis7 · 07/10/2025 19:42

why not contact the council let them know you are a concerned neighbour and things are not normal tell them its stressing you out and do they know anything if they are a decent person they should help!!! hope everything ok

Bluedenimdoglover · 07/10/2025 19:46

Just knock the door. It's neighbourly, not nosey, to be concerned when things are unusual.

tartanhaggis7 · 07/10/2025 19:48

im sure everything ok years ago my m8 was not responding @ hoose i eventually broke the back door window got in no sign got glazier oot to fix window £75 2 weeks ltr he comes round with receipt for bloody window moaning its not the same type of glass!!!! 2 weeks in corfu spur of the moment gratitude 😎😎😎

Greysowhat · 07/10/2025 19:53

Knock already ! ! !

Well1mBack · 07/10/2025 19:55

Are they maybe toilet training their child? We spent over a week in the house with the blinds shut as DC was naked and peeing everywhere.

Wherethewildthingsfart · 07/10/2025 19:57

Death in the family and curtains closed as a sign of respect?

Do people actually do that? Do the deceased appreciate it?

Lots of posts on here that have made me chuckle. Do you all watch a lot of detective programmes?

Has anyone suggested that the foxes may have got in and eaten the entire family?

What?! I'm going to say, that's really very unusual. Didn't you have to go to work? Take the child out for exercise and fresh air?
Also, why naked?

I had to get a welfare check done for my next door neighbour, the police smashed his front door in (sadly he had died) .

Yes, this is what the police do (happened to my uncle. Nothing wrong with him apart from being dead drunk and he was furious). Surely health visits, GP surgery etc would have mobile numbers for the parents?

Ladygardenerinderby · 07/10/2025 20:04

I’d be exactly the same as you , I’d defo go and knock you can pretend you’ve a parcel gone missing or something. Not to worry you and positive they’re just ill and hunkered down but an elderly neighbour of ours years ago we noticed her blinds weren’t being closed and opened . We went over and she had passed away , she was old and had no family but since then I’m a bit vigilant over stuff like this

LouiseK93 · 07/10/2025 20:08

Not if its carbon monoxide poisoning

Why the council? Its the police who carry out welfare checks

Shitshowcentral · 07/10/2025 20:23

Very concerning. You really ought to be following this up as a priority

FlorenceAgainstTheMachine · 07/10/2025 20:28

Yeah honestly, I’m quite laissez-faire about things but I’d be ringing the police for a welfare check.

Sasssquatch · 07/10/2025 20:31

Do you have gas if you’re rural? If you do I’d be a bit more worried I think.

Don't you like to open them in the morning, and let the sunshine in? Greet the day? Open the windows?.

Well obviously not. Spoiler.....other people are different to you.
