To finally agree with a junior doctors strike

Horsehow · 06/10/2025 18:20

Junior doctors have decided to strike as they are being overlooked for jobs / training posts which are instead given to international applicants. I’ve always abhorred their money grabbing strikes in the past, but support this one 100%. UK doctors should be recruited where possible, and international graduates only turned to where we cannot find a suitable recruit in the UK.

The 10 Year Health Plan for England executive summary which was published in July had only this to say on the matter: "[we will] work across government to prioritise UK medical graduates for foundation and specialty training" i.e. over 10 years - since it is a 10 year plan.

Since then it has been patiently (at least at first) pointed out to you that according to GMC estimates it will take until nearly 2035 with the most optimist modelling to see any improvement in the proportion of UK graduates in the NHS workforce.

Yet you and Mumsneedwine have been dominating threads like this for months with comments such as ""Wes" is listening" and "priority for UKGs is coming".

At the risk of sounding like Mumsneedwine, I knew Peter Prinsley (I guess you mean him) very well, we were juniors in the same place. He was, and presumably is, a thoroughly decent chap, but he gave no hint of having magical powers.

At this point I don't automatically call you a liar (even though you do to me 🤷‍♀️). But it's v good to know you like Sheffield and UEA. He's a v nice man.

Scotiasdarling · 24/10/2025 18:59

And just because you disagree doesn't make you right.

I love the last line of your post though.

EasternStandard · 24/10/2025 19:01

mumsneedwine · 24/10/2025 18:55

@Scotiasdarling Seville has been very rude, very patronising and accused me of many nasty things. Innocent they are not.

Just because you disagree does not make you right. Debate is a good thing. This thread has educated many people, who can make up their own minds as to their feelings on UKGs prioritisation. Because they disagree does not mean they have the readinv ability of a 9 year old, or like teaching calculus go fish.

I can’t see anything that means these insults are valid anyway.

If there’s a compelling argument they wouldn’t be needed.

mumsneedwine · 24/10/2025 19:01

I never said it did. Everyone entitled to an opinion. Without abuse or rudeness.

PurpleFairyLights · 24/10/2025 19:12

Scotiasdarling · 24/10/2025 18:47

I hesitate to re enter this bear pit, because the last time I criticised you I was piled on by people accusing me and an entirely innocent poster (Sevillian) However I must say and perhaps you don't mean it, but your posts do come over as low level threatening.

There was this mornings ultimatum to Wes Streeting that 'He has until December.'
Now you are accusing Marchesman of bringing the profession into disrepute because he was mildly frustrated at a teacher who couldn't or wouldn't understand grade inflation. Were you thinking of the GMC? I think they have more to worry about than a doctor being short tempered with someone who isn't their patient.
And then 'He has lost the doctors trust, he will regret that'.

I'm afraid it's very unpleasant.

The December comment was not an ultimatum as you know. It was a statement of fact. Oriel opens on December.

The comments are bringing the profession into disrepute. I doubt many people will find comments directed at @mumsneedwine a female, chemistry teacher such as teaching calculus to a fish or reading age of a 9 year old appropriate.

mumsneedwine · 24/10/2025 19:17

@PurpleFairyLights I think it says more about them than me 😁. To be fair, teaching calculus to a fish might be easier than teaching it to year 11 last thing on a Friday before half term.

Scotiasdarling · 24/10/2025 19:19

Actually no one said she has a reading age of 9. I don't know her so couldn't possibly comment. I said that the average British adult has a reading age of between 9 and 11. Mumsneedwine has chosen to believe it was about her and take offence.

Unfortunately these unpleasant comments often divert the threat away from UKMGs being given priority for specialty training.

How insulting to the British public.

Sevillian · 24/10/2025 19:22

I have wrongly accused you of precisely nothing mumsneedwine.

I have also not been 'very rude'.

If I have done that even once, or been very rude even once, you need to evidence it before you say it or you definitely risk someone reporting you (again).

Sevillian · 24/10/2025 19:23

However, I'll accept patronising :)

Scotiasdarling · 24/10/2025 19:27

I'm afraid I don't see how something true can be insulting.

Sevillian · 24/10/2025 19:27

mumsneedwine · 24/10/2025 17:50

Love that I have some kind of vested monetary interest, would you care to explain @Sevillian or is it just yet another personal attack ?

You referenced people being angry with any restrictions for IMGs because it would affect their commercial interests. The heavy hints through all these threads that some posters have something to gain, presumably financially, was something I was refuting (as far as I can, given that I can only properly know about myself).

Sevillian · 24/10/2025 19:28

Scotiasdarling · 24/10/2025 19:27

Yes and that's exactly right. That's the basis of the law of defamation.

OneMorePiece · 24/10/2025 19:29

As for the changes to speciality training, not sure if they go far enough with regards to UKMG prioritisation. It's difficult to balance the interests of UKMGs and IMGs so I am guessing Wes Streeting is perhaps hoping he is perceived as having tried to prioritise UKMG interests.

Whether or not prioritisation happens depends on so many other factors like pressure from lobby groups, other parties' positions on the issues, etc. What would be more helpful is if Wes Streeting (rather than writing letters) outlines how exactly prioritisation is going to be implemented so that resident doctors have some clarity instead of having to wait for the 10 Year Plan, etc to work out where they stand.

Right now it all looks like performative politics!

To avoid the risk of the government losing more support, I hope Wes Streeting outlines exactly what he is doing to prioritise UKMGs while protecting the interests of doctors already working in the NHS.

Sevillian · 24/10/2025 19:31

PurpleFairyLights · 24/10/2025 19:21

Unfortunately these unpleasant comments often divert the threat away from UKMGs being given priority for specialty training.

The thread is discussing whether on not that's appropriate and a legitimate reason to strike. Therefore counter arguments can't be a diversion or a derail.

PurpleFairyLights · 24/10/2025 19:32

OneMorePiece · 24/10/2025 18:40

See the link below with regards to PLAB.

www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-our-registers/plab/recent-pass-rates-for-plab-1-and-plab-2

There has been a huge increase in the number of IMGs since 2020. I would expect a similar level of demand from IMGs in the next recruitment round despite talks of prioritisation of UKMGs. More IMGs than ever have done and passed both PLAB 1 & 2. I am not surprised that resident doctors are planning on striking again given all this uncertainty relating to their training. The number of IMGs taking PLAB2 have increased from over 3000 in 2020 to just under 20 000 IMGs in 2024.

Not sure what the situation is with the CREST forms. Presumably IMGs can still have them signed off overseas like last time? It's unfair to UKMGs and IMGs who are already working in the NHS if the recruitment cycle is still allowing this. Also this sort of signing off is open to fraud. It is better to have these signed off by people already working in the NHS.

Totally agree about IMG CREST forms being open to fraud and how unfair that is to UKMGs and IMGs already working in the NHS. This could be very dangerous just like lack of DBS standard of vetting as seen by GMC not doing checks properly.

Regarding PLAB unbelievable that UK graduates are seen as deficient but PLAB not mentioned.

So stick to the facts. Because she you agree with people claiming we want the NHS 'cleared out' you are not right. I have been called many things by you and others, your memory is rather short. But others can also read, better than most 9 year olds. Oh and I'm not defended. Being dyslexic I know my exact reading age 😂

Scotiasdarling · 24/10/2025 19:37

Mumsneedwine please stop attacking Sevillian when you're cross with me. People might think you aren't reading the name the top of the post.

stuffedpeppers · 24/10/2025 19:41

Luckily the Phase 1 training review recognises that changes in the past have been good for some areas and detrimental to others - MMC, MTAS, run through training.
One size does not fit all, having one portal for entry and not accepting that different specialities need different attributes and therefore nuance matters.

Mums and Purple you advocate for a system that has been tried and found to be faulty in areas and good in others. You blame failure to progress on IMGs not recognising that not getting what you want first time may be multifactorial not just because of PAs and IMGs.

I am not pro IMG or anti UKMG but I am anti guaranteed training and a job from the age of 17 and it is not the fault of those young people who want to be doctors from where ever they come from in the world. that more medical schools means more competition. I am not disgusted by people who come here and train and go back home, or UKMGS who train here at tax payers expense and then leave for Australia, NZ because they want to.

One size does not fit all so please stop playing allegedly uncaring consultants, IMGs, PAs and anyone else who comes in your cross hairs.

Recognise peoples lived experience may have as much value as your own and try not to insult anyone you do not agree with - and yes you have insulted me over all of these threads on numerous occasions.

mumsneedwine I don't boast about many things but I have a superlative memory and always have done, for as long as my parents and those around me can remember. It's so good it frequently startles people, even in my advancing years. So there. Thus I need evidence of the things you're spitting out - either that or recognise that you'll be reported. I have not wrongly accused you of a single thing, anywhere.

Similarly I have on not one single occasion referred to you wanting to clear out the NHS nor agreed with that comment.

Your post is not coherent. In a literal sense. You might want to edit or delete.
