Can someone please tell me what is in Antarctica?
I’ve got a friend is obsessed in conspiracy theories. I try not to listen to his shit.
Hes just told me to google this place and asked me why countries are afraid to explore this place and a lot of them have signed an agreement to not go near it.

I don’t know this he told me to look into it and I can’t be arsed with his theories.

Hes saying there is an ice wall no one can go behond! He’s talking about flat earth and why planes don’t dip when they go around it. If the world is spinning a thousand mile an hour why do we land in the same spot if we go up in an helicopter for a minute then land back down.

Honestly I have had to leave. I’m not sure if it’s the wine talking with him

Snow, ice, some mountains, penguins, a few scientists, and a lot of empty space. No impenetrable ice walls.

Your friend has fallen down the conspiracy rabbit hole. He's gone full loony.

pintofpkss · 05/10/2025 20:47

Exactly what I said you really have gone down the hole. No wonder he gets so depressed about things

You could always ask the little man in green in this thoroughly accurate drawing.

First one down, it’s copyrighted so I’m not copying it.

Now I know why my friend, who worked for many years at the British Antarctic Survey as a PA, never went out there although she qualified. I thought she just didn’t want to be cut off from normal life for six months.

Either that or your friend is mistaken.

He's not mistaken, he's ignoring facts and reality. It's not an error, he's made a choice.

Octoberaddsagale · 05/10/2025 20:53

My post wasn’t serious, sorry. It’s a shame your friend is, though. You must be worried about him.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 05/10/2025 20:58

What's in Antarctica? A fuckload of ice sitting on top of a continent. The ice is literally miles thick in places

Countries are not afraid to explore the place. Multiple countries have permanently manned research bases there. There are also seasonal camps, including the commercial Union Glacier Camp where you can visit.

His stupid "gotcha!" questions about why planes don't dip and why helicopters don't get blown away, shows a stunning lack of his knowledge, atrocious understanding of what gravity is, poor understanding of basic weather patterns, and overall a massive inability to think through the implications of his claims.

He's a spectacularly gullible idiot. He's the living embodiment of the Dunning-Kruger effect. And he's not worth arguing with because you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't use reason to get in to.

Periperi2025 · 05/10/2025 20:59

My friend works out there. Judging by his photos it's mostly ice, snow, penguins, seals, and amazing blue sky (but that might be because he's not outside taking photos on non blue sky days!).

WonderingWanda · 05/10/2025 20:59

There's ice, mountains, research stations and melting glaciers. The antarctic treaty was signed to protect one of the last remaining wilderness areas in the absence of it's own population and to prevent war breaking out over nations trying to lay claim to it. The treaty is due for review in 1948 and I'm sure there will be increasing pressure from many nations to stake a claim on it's resources. It not a secret doorway to the edge of the flat earth.

Anyone else expect this to be a baby name thread?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/10/2025 21:08

This is why I wouldn't go there...

My BiL has been there for work. Your friend is speaking shite. 😂

Lmnop22 · 05/10/2025 21:17

I’ve been. It’s just ice and penguins. No wall. But you know that (I hope!)

pintofpkss · 05/10/2025 21:17

I honestly can’t win trying to talk to him that’s why I had to leave. It’s like he has an answer for everything and not letting me get a word in. I didn’t realise he was this bad

There are no polar bears in the Antarctic. It is fabulous, absolutely stunning, with hundreds of whales - I was lucky enough to go 2 years ago.

BMW6 · 05/10/2025 21:30

There's absolutely no point in trying to reason with him OP. You could ask him to stop talking about this shit as you're not interested or walk away from the friendship if he won't.

It's sad but I fear your MH will take a battering over time.

sign him up to British Antacrtic Surveys diaries. He can follow the flights of their twin otter aircraft flying down there for the season, hear stories from all the different trades and scientists who work there. Many other countries have their own bases down there too. He's gone mad.

There was an expedition there last year where a bunch of flat-earth proponents were invited along. The aim was to observe the summer sun not setting for over 24hrs, something that should be completely impossible if the earth was flat with the north pole at the centre and Antarctica spread around the edge

All the big flat-earth advocates - ie, the ones who earn their living promoting this to their gullible followers - refused. Some others did go. To their credit, one or two of them came back admitting that they might be wrong. The rest of the flat-earth community then castigated the converts, claimed the entire thing was faked, and even said that what they saw wasn't the sun but a fireball sent by Satan to deceive them.
