Antarctica

Can someone please tell me what is in Antarctica?
I’ve got a friend is obsessed in conspiracy theories. I try not to listen to his shit.
Hes just told me to google this place and asked me why countries are afraid to explore this place and a lot of them have signed an agreement to not go near it.

I don’t know this he told me to look into it and I can’t be arsed with his theories.

Hes saying there is an ice wall no one can go behond! He’s talking about flat earth and why planes don’t dip when they go around it. If the world is spinning a thousand mile an hour why do we land in the same spot if we go up in an helicopter for a minute then land back down.

Honestly I have had to leave. I’m not sure if it’s the wine talking with him

I’ve been, it’s cold.

He’s just said to me I’m not clever I know nothing and I need to join kier starmers party because I getting brainwashed by the government.

He has fallen down a conspiracy hole. There is loads of this online, probably written by AI, so no basis in reality. All you can do is stick to real life. Has he eaten recently? Been out for a walk, etc. Refuse to talk about this stuff and keep things real.

And that's why conspiracy theories are popular. They allows poorly educated and/or thick people to think they've got secret knowledge that "proves" they're actually smarter than everyone thinks they are. It's an ego boost. But they're not smart enough to be able to tell that what they believe simply doesn't add up to a coherent theory.

HarbourClankCat · 05/10/2025 21:44

I first became interested in Antarctica in the 80s. There have been multiple governments across the world in that time and generally the interests in Antartica have stayed more or less the same. He must really think Keir Starmer is some kind of special hero!

BMW6 · 05/10/2025 21:46

His arrogance is astounding!

Apart from this batshittery is he a good friend?

Imisscoffee2021 · 05/10/2025 21:50

Does his name begin with a J? I had a long chat with a colleague who believed in the conspiracies you describe 😆

I am a big fan of the heroic age if antarctic explorers and a great book called Hoosh about the culinary history of Antarctica (yes there is one!) So my knowledge is based on this, but it's something of a neutral land mass where science prevails and no country has a claim to it by agreement. It's actually a well explored place considering there's not much there and how incredibly hostile the landscape is.

I will say what I said to my colleague J, there are real terrible things being parading in front of us in plain sight by the powers that be, but by all means continue to believe what you want about the Antarctic conspiracies 😅

Pedallleur · 05/10/2025 21:50

I've seen Alien Vs Predator so I know what's under the ice/snow.

outerspacepotato · 05/10/2025 21:54

The Thing!

Shape shifting stuff from outer space and creeping horrors that you can't pronounce their names.

Yes, he really is a good friend. Before tonight we never really spoke about stuff like this. He had his views and I had mine. Never argued or got into debates about it. I knew he believed in some shit but we never brought it up. I don’t even really know how this started.

He's sent me about 5 videos about it all. I’ve not watched them and just messaged him saying I’m not interested and if he still wants to be friends we will speak tomorrow, BUT not about this. I don’t want to hear it anymore

Countries have signed an agreement document. The Antarctic treaty which agrees no militarisation, no dog sleds, no building, no mining etc etc. the reason not many people go there is because it is a massive wildlife reserve and climate research centre.

Having said that you can visit as a tourist on the peninsula. I'd suggest he goes and sees for himself. You probably won't see him again if he wanders off into the icy wilderness to find out but I doubt it'll be because he's fallen off the edge

Seriously it's not hard to find counter arguments. Some people are beyond help!

I've just made a note to myself to talk about biased articles and fake news in my geography lessons again this week.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 05/10/2025 22:24

Lots of ice, penguins, seals and whales. I was there in January.

Honestly. Miles of nothing. Its an incredible place and I'm so glad many countries realise how precious and important this place is for all of us and want to protect ut.

Fingers crossed that lasts - looking at you, Donald, and your meddlesome nonsense.

I'm sorry about your friend. Truly its a magical place.

Thissickbeat · 05/10/2025 22:45

Penguin Post Office.

WonderingWanda · 05/10/2025 20:59

There's ice, mountains, research stations and melting glaciers. The antarctic treaty was signed to protect one of the last remaining wilderness areas in the absence of it's own population and to prevent war breaking out over nations trying to lay claim to it. The treaty is due for review in 1948 and I'm sure there will be increasing pressure from many nations to stake a claim on it's resources. It not a secret doorway to the edge of the flat earth.

they are actually freezing again at present but they think it might just be some sort of anomaly and not a new ice age!!

mathanxiety · 05/10/2025 23:35

I voted YABU for listening to the crank for more then thirty seconds.

Unless you’ve been and seen with your own eyes if whatever the conspiracy theorists claim is there actually exists or not – then no one truly knows for certain.

I'm sure some of the many people who actually work down there would have mentioned it! I had a friend who visited a couple of times with people from her workplace, she didn't come back with batshit tales.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 06/10/2025 01:48

Periperi2025 · 05/10/2025 20:59

My friend works out there. Judging by his photos it's mostly ice, snow, penguins, seals, and amazing blue sky (but that might be because he's not outside taking photos on non blue sky days!).

h friend works out there too and I’ve got these pics as well.

@pintofpkss Sounds like your friend is a flat earther.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 06/10/2025 07:14

Nutmuncher · 05/10/2025 23:39

What flat-earthers claim is impossible. Simply impossible. It just doesn't add up to anything approaching a coherent theory and would require a vast conspiracy among sailors, pilots, space agencies, communication network providers, cartographers and a thousand other disciplines to carry off. And is still easily disprovable by going to the seaside and watching ships disappear over the horizon.

There's a value to keeping an open mind but one must be careful not to be so open that ones brain falls out. Flerfers are gullible idiots believing bullshit theories pushed by a mix of cynical liars and religious nuts.

VeganStar · 06/10/2025 19:20

My DN is exactly the same. She posts videos of flat earth theories on our family page all the time.
I sometimes read the comments on the videos and they are all as batshit as each other.
They think Antarctica circles the world as a giant ice wall and that the Earth is covered by a dome called the firmament.
They say asteroids and meteors cannot enter our atmosphere because of the dome. Also by the same token we didn’t go to the moon since nothing can get past the dome.
I’ve challenged them for photographic proof of the edge of the world but unsurprisingly they’ve come up with nothing, but then if they can’t enter Antarctica they can’t take any pictures can they 🙄.
It’s come to the point where I don’t open her videos as they just do my head in.
Her thing at the moment is we are all ruled by reptilians. Give me strength 🤦🏼‍♀️

Pigriver · 06/10/2025 21:07

FIL has become like this. Not with Antarctica but during lockdown became a COVID denier despite initially shitting himself, isolating then moving to the Irish countryside. Now he's anti Big Pharma despite relying on daily meds to live and believes all kinds of AI nonsense. If I ever try to discuss this with him it actually hurts my brain. Gets all 'gotcha! See you didn't know that did you? Call yourself a teacher? I thought you knew everything.....' etc etc etc 😮‍💨 there ain't no arguing with stoopid.
He also doesn't believe that ADHD is 'a thing' and his nephews are just naughty despite every male in the family being exactly the same including him!

CoffeeCantata · 06/10/2025 22:49

Penguins but no polar bears. The Arctic has the polar bears but no penguins.

I prefer penguins.

JAA17 · 06/10/2025 22:53

PrincessofWells · 05/10/2025 21:26

There are no polar bears in the Antarctic. It is fabulous, absolutely stunning, with hundreds of whales - I was lucky enough to go 2 years ago.

Ah, ha. PrincesofWells, we have caught you out. [Points finger accusingly.] It is you that is the conspiracy theorist.

The Pingu cartoons clearly show Polar Bears and Penguins playing together. Trust the science.

OldBeyondMyYears · 06/10/2025 23:06

Well I’ve actually been to South Georgia (went on an RFA ship when I lived in the Falklands). No impenetrable ice walls…but it was icy 🥶🤣
