For being a bit bored and slightly irritated by people constantly being offended by a word!!

Why is it that a word used by someone from a different..part of the country, upbringing , culture , education or decade offends so many people? Why do we all make such a big deal about not liking a word that someone has used to describe something?
What ever happened to sticks and stones????????

what a coincidence that you name change to have a dig at another thread. you yourself used epi as an example.
well seeing as you have namechange, are new or at worst a troll. trying to educate you seems to be a waste of time imo.

MsSparkle · 04/06/2008 19:55

My dp calls disabled people cripples

Although he is disabled himself so i guess that's why. He also calls old people geriatricks (sp?) but in a jokey way!

2shoes · 04/06/2008 19:56

lovely

MsSparkle · 04/06/2008 20:02

I know. I think alot of people would be offended by some of things he says! I won't go into that though...

xlr8 · 04/06/2008 20:09

Fio, what a pointless response! Quite obviously I am ABLE to read or I would not be able to reply to you would I?!
However at least it is a step up from fuck off.... Well done.

2shoes, Yes it is JUST a coincidence , they do happen you know! As for the rest of what you said, I havn't realy got a clue what your point is..

Seashell71 · 04/06/2008 20:29

the "F" word... = formula! I know many mnetters are horrified by it!

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 04/06/2008 20:40

so for the days our "child looks normal, can't work it out, will be a twat" t-shirts are in the wash we need a "yes it is your right to use the word spaz, mong and epi - but if you do so it is my right to lamp you one"

perhaps someone can come up with something more succint?

2shoes · 04/06/2008 21:03

xlr8no you don't get the point at all.

xlr8 · 04/06/2008 21:09

Well 2shoes I get the point of this thread, because I started it, whatever else it is you are talking about, perhaps you could take it else where.

Glad to see you agree with me

pmsl YOU REALLY ARE A NUTTER

xlr8 · 05/06/2008 15:57

NUTTER-noun: meaning, mad - mentally ill

I'm quite sure that those that are unfortunate enough to suffer from a mental illness may well be offended by your use of this word!!

perhaps you should practice what you preach.
I think I have made my point now.

OP posts:
2shoes · 05/06/2008 16:02

proves my point
they are not just words. funny how you don't like them being used against you

2shoes · 05/06/2008 16:04

what a shame you have to hide behind a name change

mistypeaks · 05/06/2008 16:05

From nutter, the occupation of nut-gatherer.

pagwatch · 05/06/2008 16:14

riven. rolf at 'norms'

the 'oh they are just words why can't we chill' arguement is so flawed. If it weren't then any number of racial slurs and religious slanders would be greeted worldwide with 'get over it'.
i am very pleased with you that you do not find certain words offensive. I actually agree that at times it is far better for me to just roll my eyes at the ignorance of some people and ignore them. But that does not make it OK to be offensive. And beyond that I am not sure what your point is.
the use of these words is nearly always intended to hurt the most vulnerable. My DH has never heard anyone sneer at my son. Possibly because he is nearly six foot tall and built like a brick shit house. Funny then that my son has and i have.
The problem with your arguement ( well one of the many) is that you would have these already vulnerable people made more so by placing the responsibilty upon them to 'get over it' rather than placing the responsibility upon society to try and prevent the use of such words.
You are trying to wrap your opinion up as being laid back and cool but actually you are just advocating a bullies charter where the most offensive insult is to be born because to object is to risk that current insult of being "PC".

You have not proven anything. Other than that you want the world to accept your view of life and that others should not be insulted because you do not personally feel that insult.
There have been some very interestingthreads on here in recent days upon the nature of empathy. rather than baiting the parents of children who are regularly subjected to quite foul slurs you could disappear for a while and read those.
there's a love

xlr8 · 05/06/2008 16:36

Pag,
look, I am not saying we should all go around using racial slurs and saying whatever the fuck we want to people.
I am saying that if we all stop making such a big deal about the use of a word and insisting that people must check the origin of a word before using it, then those that are TRYING to purposfully offend or hurt someone with a word, will just get bored with not getting a reaction, and quite possibly stop using it.

But should we be attacking people for the use of a word with innocent intentions?
Quite a few people on here had no idea where epi originated from, so should we string them up if they use it in a different context to it's origin? of course not!

Words like nutter are used everyday, and just mean different things to different people.

Just found this, am speechless and very fucked off. Now come on girls...lets get ourselves back to the SN section where we belong .. Clearly these norms (love that!) are a breed apart

pagwatch · 05/06/2008 17:04

But it doesn't work like that does it.
And your premis seems to be based on the assumption that some slurs are worse than others.
Are you seriously suggesting that people should get over it if someone calls then for example a paki? That we should universally ignore that and then the NF will just stop using it?
If you believe that I think you are a little mistaken. And if you think paki remains inappropriate then all you are really saying is that some slurs are worse than others.

The use of these snyde verbal insults are invidious because they create a climate where a certain group can be quietly sneered at and looked down upon. I think it is no coincidence that people with learning difficulties are some of the most vulnerable in almost every respect. Increasing numbers of assults are occuring and access to even basic things like health care is compromised because their lives are seen as less - not as important as NT people. The name calling the 'dudeification' of offensive times like spazz and retard are a growing sign.

I understand the point you are trying to make. And for what it is worth I have never had any issue with the mistaken use of words I find difficult from well meaning people.

But like many things in life the theory is far removed from the practice. You wish people to step away from their reaction to offensive words but I still maintain all you would achieve is to allow really nasty abuse of vulnerable groups some cover.

xlr8 · 05/06/2008 17:20

PAG 'And if you think paki remains inappropriate then all you are really saying is that some slurs are worse than others. '

'But like many things in life the theory is far removed from the practice. You wish people to step away from their reaction to offensive words but I still maintain all you would achieve is to allow really nasty abuse of vulnerable groups some cover.'

You talk much sense pag.
You are right ,because I do think that 'paki' is inappropriate, so I guess I am saying that some are worse than others.

I'm quite sure that my ideas won't change the world, but, perhaps those on MN that jump at a person for the use of a word, may just think twice, that it may be innocent!
It would be a start anyway!
