Why is it that a word used by someone from a different..part of the country, upbringing , culture , education or decade offends so many people? Why do we all make such a big deal about not liking a word that someone has used to describe something?
What ever happened to sticks and stones????????

I love a quiche want to share one?

pagwatch · 04/06/2008 17:37

one of the boys at DS1's school called his brother a retard.
having brought him up well and being a highly educated and sensitive young man my DS1 smacked him in the mouth and split his lip.
The boy threatened to report DS1. All the boys who witnessed it said that if he did they would report what the boy had called DS2. Said boy knew he would be in a big pile of pooh from school who would not tolerate such a word.

Still not sure how i feel about whole incident except very proud of DS1's classmates - and a little curious as to how great it must feel just to twat someone in the mouth who said something like that instead of having to always be the bigger man. ( particularly when the start the tedious psuedo intellectual 'but it is just a word and language is a vibrant thing blah blah blah'. Actually if they use "PC" at anypoint I think it should just be a free hit. But thats just me.)

(should add that DS1 has never ever hit anyone before or since.

2shoes · 04/06/2008 17:40

pagwatch i think they just get to the enough is enough stage. ds put up and shut for ages now he just decks them. you can't educate some people and sadly it is their dc's that pay the price, with cut lips in the end.

lucyellensmum · 04/06/2008 17:57

cunt, fuck, bugger, arse, pig, cock, dick, wank/er shit

None of these words offend me

Words used to belittle people pertaining to disability or race offend me deeply

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 04/06/2008 17:59

I'm clapping your ds pagwatch (and yours 2shoes).

pagwatch · 04/06/2008 18:00

lucyellnsmum
go to your room this instant !

edam · 04/06/2008 18:10

Bless you fio, ditto!

xlr8 · 04/06/2008 18:20

FioFio
"and I suggest you fuck off. You dont deserve my intelligence. You started this thread because you have a problem with 2shoes and the whole PC thing about disabilities. I havent got time for you and once again i not 'suprised' mumsnet has not deleted it. They seem to find some kind of joy in this kind of ruck"

I shall say this one more time... I STARTED THIS THREAD DUE TO A DISAGREEMENT WITH A FRIEND, I MERELY USED THE OTHER THREAD AS AN EXAMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has nothing to do with 2shoes!
And I can't remeber ever saying anything about being pc or disabilities.

Again, my suggestion is that you read the whole thread properly, and don't go making up things in your own head about what YOU think I mean.

Well, the most recent example being 'epi'.

GreenElizabeth · 04/06/2008 18:29

Edam, I apologise. I deleted the post as soon as I had read the thread properly. I read the first post and thought, ho hum. Added 2 and 2 and came up with five.

edam · 04/06/2008 18:32

Thanks, Green. Was rather put out to be compared to a poster whose views are nothing like mine. (And who is clearly not a pedant!)

2shoes · 04/06/2008 18:33

xlr8 why the name change???

BoyzntheShire · 04/06/2008 18:39

i dont see whats so hard to understand; that if lots of people are offended by a word, its just polite/human/intelligent not to use it.

duh.

xlr8 · 04/06/2008 18:54

2shoes you have already asked me about the name change, and I have already answered it.
AGAIN---the name change was due to the fact that the friend that had annoyed me last night comes on MN.
