For being a bit bored and slightly irritated by people constantly being offended by a word!!

Why is it that a word used by someone from a different..part of the country, upbringing , culture , education or decade offends so many people? Why do we all make such a big deal about not liking a word that someone has used to describe something?
What ever happened to sticks and stones????????

x posts.

epi is offensive as an insult / description... what is funny about epilepsy?

SNoraWotzThat · 04/06/2008 01:03

If I'd heard epi and a slang word I would of thought it was sort for epic (massive, cool) that kind of thing!

Like "an epic, massive, science fiction movie"

But what do I know?

xlr8 · 04/06/2008 01:03

HumphreyCushion , I am not suggesting that it IS a word an itelligent adult would use, It was an example of the sort of words you hear from all types of people. But is it offensive?

NoBiggy · 04/06/2008 01:05

I hadn't heard that in RL for, probably decades. And the person that would regularly say it would refer to her foster brother as "baby coonhead". Make of that what you will.

It's not my place to be offended by it, I feel. If epilepsy sufferers say it's out of order then I can't argue.

NoBiggy · 04/06/2008 01:08

xlr8, I'm hoist on my own petard there.

I rest my case.. At what point did I say epilepsy is funny???
I didn't, did I?
I used it as an example of words that you can't say because paople think they are sooo offensive, when it fact these days the word 'epi' is used when a person is say ..causing a scene.

OP posts:
NoBiggy · 04/06/2008 01:18

Now, I'm wondering...I wouldn't say don't have an epi. I'd feel really uncomfortable. But I can imagine saying, for example, when recounting a tale, "I nearly had a fit". Or describing someone being "in fits" of giggles.

Because epi sounds disrespectful I think. And fit sounds less specific.

controlfreakyagain · 04/06/2008 01:20

but a person having an epileptic fit isn't "causing a scene", they are suffering from a serious medical condition..... do you think it's ok to call someone you consider is feeble a "crip" then??? what's the difference? (and if you do think that's ok then you can bog off)

NoBiggy · 04/06/2008 01:26

Going to bed now...don't stop I want to read more of this tomorrow.

xlr8 · 04/06/2008 01:28

WEll, I agree Nobiggy. I personally wouldn't use the word epi either, however, nor would I be offended if someone else did!
I do use the word fit in a similar context to you.

And for the record to those that want to crucify, I suffer from epilepsy ( amongst other things)!!

OP posts:
xlr8 · 04/06/2008 01:37

controlfreakyagain.... AGAIN ..IT WAS AN EXAMPLE of the, now, new use of the word!

I'm quite sure I know that it is a serious medical condition, not only as a sufferer, but also as a friend to a fellow sufferer that died in the night choking on her own tounge!!!

controlfreakyagain "(and if you do think that's ok then you can bog off)"

Again I rest my case with you, because if I don't agree with you then apparantly I can just bog off.... Well done..

i wouldnt use epi - but i occasionally use fit.

growing up calling someone a liar was tantermount to murder ( shit you not) not in jest - never.

now i frequently say " OMG your such a chuffin liar, you did say you would make me a brew....."

i also use " don't be so chuffin stupid" when refering to someone doing something stupid

alsthough i accept i am calling the person - not the act

and i dont give a shit you bunch of stupid epi liars

xlr8 · 04/06/2008 01:53

OMG Custardo, you and your comments should be removed immediately!!!!!!!!!

but people say throwing an epi, you can't throw an episode can you? you throw a fit.

Not all fits are epilepsy, you can have a fit of temper, so I would say "fit" is reasonable but "epi" is on a par with "mong" or "spaz" and therefore offensive.

mistypeaks · 04/06/2008 10:08

I still to this day see red if someone calls me a liar. And bitch. If I do something daft around the house (quite frequent ) DH has been known to call me a "dozy mare, dopey twat etc - all in jest - he called me a silly bitch once in the same jesty manner and I flipped. He's never used that word again. We all find different things offensive I guess. but there are blanket phrases and words that you should never ever use.

What pigleto said. 'Throwing an epi' is on a par with spaz and other similar words/phrases which just aren't acceptable these days. I am not generally someone who considers herself to be overly PC, but I'd say that's way past the line I consider to be acceptable.
