Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

Would you eat chicken breast filets 2 days out of date?

I take it you didnt follow the racist riots in NI earlier this year. All immigrants in the areas effected were targeted. As well as a leisure centre sheltering those driven from their homes.

I did follow them. I'm an avid X user because its the only place you can see the full footage as it unfolds.

You said: 'Any brown face will do.'

You've now said: 'All immigrants in the areas effected were targeted.'

So thank you for contradicting yourself and proving my point that you have no evidence to suggest people who fly flags are targeting people of colour based entirely on their race.

Simplestars · 05/10/2025 17:48

@UrticaDioca fly a bigger more colorful 🌈 flag.
Love and peace✌

I would interpret Unite the Kingdom as anti racist and in opposition to the St George flag epidemic.

Stephen Yaxley-Lennon used Unite the Kingdom as the name of his latest rally when he very much wants to divide the kingdom.

Americano75 · 05/10/2025 17:48

Jesus, at least you know to avoid them like the plague.

I’ve never heard of this expression in relation to Tommy Robinson until this thread TBF.

I had. OP, the flag will blow down in the next storm.

The problem isn’t going away even if reform get in. We have an aging population and short of encouraging everyone to have 3+ children the only solution is increased immigration.

I wish people would differentiate between immigration and illegal immigration/ small boats.

We may need skilled migrants in the future but like Australia, we may need a 'points system'.

The anger at the moment is because of illegal immigration and unskilled migrants who don't or can't contribute to the economy.

What’s the offence with ‘unite the kingdom’ written on a Union Jack?

It is a political slogan used by Tommy Robinson

Anyone who really wants to unite the kingdom would not desecrate a flag by scrawling slogans over it. It is a flag for everyone not one political group.

OH THE IRONY!

Poland has the toughest laws on immigration and does not have the problem that the UK has, because they eject anyone who tries to enter illegally. Poland is about as "far right" as you can get. How ironic.

PS. A cattery that's almost always full won't give two figs that you use another cattery. They won't even know. 🙄

Poland currently has a centrist Liberal government under PM Donald Tusk, former President of the European Council. And the immediate ejection of those who enter illegally is only sanctioned on the border with Belarus, and only because Poland passed a law earlier this year to allow a temporary suspension of the internationally recognised right to claim asylum. This suspension can last up to 60 days (renewable) but even that includes exceptions for minors, pregnant women, those with urgent medical needs, and those at risk of harm. Poland acknowledges that it is waiving its international obligations, and has also convinced the EU to allow this apparent violation of the Dublin Treaty as falling under extraordinary circumstances. It's not intended to be a permanent solution but a stopgap until action can be taken against Belarus from actively mass-importing immigrants from conflict zones to dump at their EU borders. Lithuania has a similar problem and currently has a case pending against Belarus at the ICJ.

And Poland currently has a MUCH larger issue with illegal immigration than the UK has, which is logical if you look at a map, hence the "emergency"

How on earth have we got to a point in this country where flying our own countries flag makes us racist. Honestly speechless.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 05/10/2025 17:57

GabrielsOboe · 05/10/2025 17:28

I disagree with much of what you say.

There is cause and effect of course - Reform is merely a symptom of Labour, and previous successive government failure to control immigration. Once Labour are out - immigration is under control, and people are no longer told how to feel, and that they are ‘racists’, the ‘far right’ as you call them, the issue will probably fade away.

I happen to believe that the vast majority are not racist - insist on telling them that they are however, and is it any wonder people feel aggrieved?

I think you are misunderstanding me. I agree with you. That is my whole point. Most people are not far right and racist. It's not me calling them that, it's all the left leaning progressive types who simply cannot fathom that anyone could be a decent person with a conscience and a heart and yet still vote Reform, or want to be proudly patriotic without being told their country's flag is 'only ever' flown by the far right, and the obvious subtext that goes with that statement.

That's the danger and folly of making outrageous assumptions and accusations about the characters of huge numbers of ordinary, largely decent and blameless people instead of trying to engage with their concerns, listen to them and consider that they might actually have a valid point on a few issues.

At best, the middle class left will admit that not all Brexit or Reform voters are far right racists, just most of them, and the others are well meaning but rather dim and easily tricked. It's the typical knee jerk reaction of so called 'progressives'. It's patronising, lofty and high handed and it will shoot them in the foot yet again, just like Brexit did. Just like Gordon Brown shot himself in the foot with his 'bigoted woman' comment about Gillian Duffy.

What’s the offence with ‘unite the kingdom’ written on a Union Jack?

Really?

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 05/10/2025 17:58

Respectfully, why do you feel so uncomfortable about a flag? This country had the good graces to accept your mother into the country so she could make a life for herself and you. So why such hostility? Would you prefer to see the nation flag of your mother's native country instead? If so, go and live there, not here.

To put it another way; if you want to live in this country, you should be proud of the country and therefore the flag of the country should mean something to you.

I feel offended that you find my nation's flag offensive.

"Oh but it has 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it, that's the slogan of a far-right campaign." The country is extremely divided, as you've demonstrated based on your reaction to seeing a Union flag.

Bikergran · 05/10/2025 17:59

Ask your local Council office to intervene. You probably need planning permission for that.

The flag is not racist. The person flying it usually is.

GabrielsOboe · 05/10/2025 17:44

No worries.

Your story was almost a photocopy of another poster’s story (on a previous thread).

All good.

How can it be? I clearly stated that the cattery in question put up the flag shortly after the recent Tommy Robinson march and that I didn't believe the timing was coincidental. How would me or any other poster have put up a post about it six months ago, considering that the march was less than a month ago. That makes no sense whatsoever.

The cattery was just an example of a business that have made their stance clear and I'm not sure why you are getting hung up on the fact it's a cattery. They may or may not be generally busy, I have no idea.

I quite fancy living in Iran. I've lost my passport, and I'm a bot broke right now, so I'm hoping that when I arrive they will put me in a 5 star hotel and sign me up for benefits. Anyone fancy coming? What could go wrong?

The flag is not offensive. The intention behind flying the flag with the slogans on the flag is offensive.

As a (white) immigrant I dislike your insinuation that we should be grateful for the “good grace to let us in”. I’d say UK should be grateful to have me ! ☺️

Depends on the height of the flag pole. 4.6 metres high is the limit before planning permission has to be sought.

It's funny. You don't like it because you think it's racist, but you can't remove it based on how you personally feel. So you hope there is a technicality the council will find to then remove it.

You have zero evidence to support that.

Lived experience. Does that count for you?

Plus Farage wanting to deport any migrants. Legal as well as illegal.

The slogan means Unite the Racists. I have 100% English DNA and I wouldn’t like it on my street, but it will blow down in the next storm.

I would interpret Unite the Kingdom as anti racist and in opposition to the St George flag epidemic.

That’s what I initially interpreted it as.

Idk, as a child of immigrants, why the flags do not bother me. It’s just national pride?

I know some people are trying to push a racist narrative by doing it. I choose to see the positive in it . I try my best to contribute to society, say hello to as many people who don’t look like me and breakdown barriers with kindness. (As much as I can(!))

There’s far too much hate in the world. It’s only the masses who suffer in the end. I won’t be adding to the hate.

CurlewKate · 05/10/2025 18:07

I’m not a particularly patriotic person-and the patriotism I have does not extend to the flag. But if I was patriotic I would be hugely offended by my flag being defaced with a racist slogan.
