Currently away for the weekend, is this acceptable?

Would appreciate views on whether or not I am being unreasonable in thinking en-suite facilities are not acceptable.

We have paid £440 for a weekend break in the UK. I am not happy and asked to move rooms but was told not possible as fully booked.

Don't know if I am being unreasonable and others would find this shower room acceptable or I am not being unreasonable and it is not what others would expect.

Currently away for the weekend, is this acceptable?

To me its horrible. Id be furious. It looks like a cheap accessible bathroom. Not luxury in the least.

I can assure you that accessible bathrooms are generally far from cheap!

NewAgeNewMe · 06/10/2025 19:29

I think what this thread shows is that disabled people (of which I’m one), really have to often put with a lot less, even when paying through the nose for it.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 06/10/2025 19:31

It really does.

Ellmau · 06/10/2025 19:32

The picture looks like the Bannatyne Spa Hotel in Hastings, but I don't think all the bathrooms are the same.

toddle19 · 06/10/2025 19:36

They should have told you prior to arrival. For some people accessible bathrooms when not needed can be triggering, for example if you’re a carer for a family member and away getting respite you don’t always want to be reminded of these things. I would have complained while I was there and asked for some kind of compensation. But you can always do it retrospectively, worth a try.

Surprised to see all the comments about shower curtains being unhygienic. In the past I have worked in places where the shower curtain was taken down and washed -just like the bed linen- after each guest, so there was always a completely clean one when someone checked in.
At least the room shown in the photo seems clean, with no mould and nothing broken! It would be good if the hotel could think of ways to make all their bathrooms (incl the 'accessible' ones) look/ feel a bit more welcoming

Accessible bathrooms need to meet certain criteria. I’m disabled and work for a building firm which does a lot of accessible shower rooms. We pride ourselves on making them as lovely as possible which is fine in someone’s personal home but ones for public use need to be Doc M compliant and be suitable for many different abilities.

Laurmolonlabe · 06/10/2025 19:45

It's a wet room , there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. if you have no evidence your husband was not told you don't have a leg to stand on.
The pictures are not your actual room you can't really complain TBH

Moimoimoimoimoimoiandanother · 06/10/2025 19:49

Oh, it's grim. I'd hate it!

Do you work at the hotel?

OP I'd be absolutley gutted if I was expecting a free standing bath with a telly on the wall that I could have a little wind down in, glass of wine in hand and got a wet room with a shower curtain that soaked the toilet instead.

Just wanted to upload photos from the website in terms of what the hotel advertised in terms of bathrooms.

If this was the bathroom advertised with the room your booked then yes I would be miffed!

Do me a favour!
We booked a deluxe room with no mention of an accessible bathroom.
The bathroom someone else has posted of an accessible bathroom in York is lovely.
Not sure why you comments are so vitronic unless you work at the hotel (the staff were not great either)!

🙄🙄

there was nothing vitriolic in my post.

no, of course I don't work in the hotel. How on earth do you imagine a staff member woukd just happen by your post on MN.

Do you have a confirmation email stating your DH booked a deluxe room? Or just your DH ' not remembering' if he was told it was accessible' or not?

dcthatsme · 06/10/2025 20:30

That is a functional bathroom - like a Travelodge or Ferry cabin showerroom. It isn't a pampering experience, unlike the bathrooms you shared. Did you hear back from the hotel?

IsItTheBlackOneOrTheRedOne · 06/10/2025 20:33

I hate wet rooms, so impractical and a really stupid idea unless you need an accessible one. You’re not BU but I prob wouldn’t let it ruin my trip x

Is it a boutique hotel in Birmingham ? We ended up with the accessible bathroom at one we stayed in, which looked almost identical to the one in the photo. Lovely hotel, but I can understand your disappointment if you were expecting a long soak in a big bath.

BuckChuckets · 06/10/2025 20:43

Has everyone missed the fact you've checked your booking and it says deluxe room, not accessible room? Keep us posted, OP, hopefully the hotel compensates you in some way!

AbbeyGrange · 06/10/2025 20:46

having a bath is part of a luxury weekend away for us

I love baths at home, but the thought of lying in a bath were numerous strangers have been standing before (doing goodness knows what) makes me feel yuck yes I know they're cleaned but still...

Catpiece · 05/10/2025 10:49

Sorry it looks grim. I wouldn’t be happy either x

I know it’s not what the OP expected, but this bathroom is not grim. It’s a daily part of life for many of us with mobility impairments. And which we’re often forced to pay more for in hotels, if there is even one available.

It’s functional. It’s not grim.

I may be in the minority but I like accessible bedrooms as they’re usually bigger. In Rīga, I adored the Hilton’s accessible bedroom, it had an amazing view, massive bathroom and was a good few m2 larger than the one we’d booked plus we were well looked after generally.

I can understand being disappointed if you weren’t expecting it when compounded with other issues you’ve raised through the thread.

Loolabell42 · 06/10/2025 20:55

If you were expecting a luxury bathroom and have been given this one without being notified then YANBU. I would be disappointed too. If nothing can be done then try to just enjoy the weekend away.

We stayed at one very similar it did its job, I think if a bathroom puts somome off a romantic weekend it is probably the person they are with

FutureMarchionessOfVidal · 06/10/2025 21:02

Oh my goodness- having looked at the posted images from the website, it is clear that you have been provided with a completely different bathroom (and thus room experience) from that which you were entitled to expect! Completely different! The hotel must have known this- it is really deplorable that they behaved in this way.

I can see OP that you are in a difficult position in that revealing the identity of the hotel may breach your own anonymity- but honestly I think people need to be really wary of this place. It is so wrong to take people’s money & disappoint them in this way.

This is an issue about false advertising & payment for facilities that have not been provided, not about the standard that disabled people are entitled to expect in accessible bathrooms.

Laurmolonlabe · 06/10/2025 21:05

Nope I've never worked in hospitality. I'm surprised you have never seen a wet room before- we had our first in Greece about 20 years ago.
