Currently away for the weekend, is this acceptable?

Would appreciate views on whether or not I am being unreasonable in thinking en-suite facilities are not acceptable.

We have paid £440 for a weekend break in the UK. I am not happy and asked to move rooms but was told not possible as fully booked.

Don't know if I am being unreasonable and others would find this shower room acceptable or I am not being unreasonable and it is not what others would expect.

Currently away for the weekend, is this acceptable?

Google AI confirm £220 per night is not, objectively, “cheap” people are just showing off I’m sure.

Just wanted to upload photos from the website in terms of what the hotel advertised in terms of bathrooms.

Surprised to see all the comments about shower curtains being unhygienic. In the past I have worked in places where the shower curtain was taken down and washed -just like the bed linen- after each guest, so there was always a completely clean one when someone checked in.
At least the room shown in the photo seems clean, with no mould and nothing broken! It would be good if the hotel could think of ways to make all their bathrooms (incl the 'accessible' ones) look/ feel a bit more welcoming

If you definitely booked and paid for a different room then by all means complain. But it sounds like you didn't and your husband agreed to an accessible room, so you really have no grounds for complaint.

The bathroom itself is completely fine. The comments about accessible bathrooms being unhygienic, unattractive and cheap are in very poor taste and are showing the ableism that pervades our society.

Really? You have no idea of my circumstances so please don't bother commenting on my post again, so unnecessary.

Just checked our booking confirmation which shows my husband booked a deluxe room, no mention of it being an accessible room or having an accessible bathroom.

Wow. That’s lovely.

Id be very disappointed if I’d turned up and ended up with the showeroom you got and not this.

Accessible bathrooms are ugly. For those who need them fine for those who don’t you end up showering banging your leg off a plastic seat on the wall.
And no Bath!!

Complain
If they don’t apologise and give you money back I’d put in a bad review.

The question is why bathroom designers don’t think that disabled people should have lovely attractive bathrooms really.

Go ahead and complain and request a refund/partial refund. Don't settle for a discount for a future booking etc.

Keep it factual with a dash of feelings, because feelings can be questioned:
Thiis was our booking confirmation
We were not told about the accesible bathroom.
We were not given another room, a compensation or any solution when this was pointed out.
You're dissapointed as it's not what is shown on the website as the expected decor of the bathroom, you feel it didn't provide you the experience you paid for. Also, the lack of responsiveness from the reception team left you deflated blah blah

You appear to have missed the point that many of us were making. It being accessible is no excuse for the room in question to be ugly and cheap. A disabled person has as much right to expect a high spec room as an able bodied person.

It’s not that they/we dont
There's not much you can do when they must have shower seats and grab rails all over the place. Those things are needed but detract from the overall design. They take away the sheek nature of a design.

That's no excuse not to have the rest of the bathroom pleasing to the eye.
My bathroom has grab rails, a toilet rail, shower chair etc. and I manage to make it look nice.
Another poster posted photos of her very nice wet room. No reason why hotels can't do the same.

Plastic seats and grab rails detract from the overall design though
and they have to be plastic as weight is an issue
Ive designed many accessible bathrooms and WCs using exactly the same materials and fittings as elsewhere but as soon as the fittings and raised WC go in it’s ruined. IMO

Does that mean they have to have horrible white hospital type tiles, no marble sink units, no nice lighting or fixtures? No, it doesn’t.

I could not agree more, I think it is dreadful the way elderly and disabled people are treated. I work in the NHS and do voluntary work in a care home so I see this first hand and it is something I feel strongly about.
However my post is about whether or not my expectations in terms of the bathroom were reasonable or unreasonable.
I work very hard for my salary and to me £440 is a lot of money to spend on a weekend break. It is also quite difficult for my husband and I to get time off together at the weekend so I was disappointed it was not the experience I was hoping for.
I just wondered what others thought of my expectations, I didn't want my post to turn in to a discussion around what is acceptable for disabled people for whom I have every sympathy.

It does remind me of facilities in hospitals. To be fair, I had a nicer en-suite during my last stay in one

mysoulmio · 06/10/2025 14:04

Im totally with you OP. I dont know what is wrong with some people on here, trying to make out youre not rich enough, ableist etc when all you wanted was a nice weekend away. Truly pathetic. As EVERYONE said, disbaled people deservce nice bathrooms and experiences as much as able bodied people, but as someone who has designed bathrooms has helpfully contributed, there are always going to be some compromises due to legal standards forn accessible bathrooms and having to cater for all types of disability. Thats a shame for them but does not apply to you.

What have the hotal said after youve shown them the booking confirmation that doent mention accessible bathroom and the photos of what you had been led to expect from their website? A significant refund I hope otherwise name then and review accordingly l.

I don't think that matters; I suspect the OP would still be complaining if the bathroom were kitted out in marble and decorative tiling, simply because it's an accessible bathroom, which doesn't have a free standing bath (the room would probably need to be at least twice the size to allow for space for a wheelchair to move about).

I also suspect that the hotel will probably maintain that the OP did indeed book a "deluxe" bedroom - guess what, even people with disabilities can book premium rooms in hotels if they wish, just in case anyone was thinking we're relegated to bog standard rooms looking out at a facing wall. DH and I recently stayed in a premium room in a hotel, with river view, for our anniversary weekend, and yes, the bathroom was much the same as in OP's bathroom.

OP has already that the hotel is fully booked this weekend. And I have pointed out that, since turning away bookings to leave rooms standing empty isn't good business sense, then if the accessible rooms haven't previously been requested by people in need of them, then they will made available for general use i.e. for able-bodied people. Which means that, inevitably, some poor bastards 😢 will be allocated, and have to suffer, the "misery" of a bedroom with an accessible bathroom. Which has a toilet. And a sink. And a shower. Just not a bath.
If it weren't the OP and her DH, then someone else. That's what happens when hotels are fully booked when you stay. I'd try on a quieter weekend another time, OP.

I've already pointed out twice on this thread why the OP has been "unlucky " enough to have been allocated an accessible room. I shan't bother a third time.

What do you think it meant? But as you say, yu'd ask not assume, like the OP's husband bizarrely did and think it meant pet friendly.

I'm not sure how if he apparently regularly travels and stays in hotels for work that he wouldn't know this.

Edited

Thank you so much for your, lovely, kind, helpful comments! 🙄
