To get 2 kittens?

So I’ve been divorced a year and finally came round to the idea of getting a cat, I think he will be a good companion for the kids and I as we have just moved into our own house. I picked him up a few days ago and he has been great, however my mum has really falllen out with me as she thinks he will ruin the house? I on the other hand had to stop myself from getting his brother so that they can be together?

Don’t get another kitten thinking that they will be company for each other. Kittens are very affectionate when got as a pair - I took two brothers from the same litter 9 years ago - but as soon as they got to about 9 months - total disinterest and in fact they occasionally scrap and hiss at each other if they’re both wanting the same sleeping spot. Cats are solitary animals when they reach maturity and one cat will be absolutely fine on its own.

I agree with this. We got a sibling rescue pair and they hated each other.
In fact one had huge stress issues, licking until he had bald patches, never at home. We tried everything. It was only when his sibling died that his stress vanished amd he started to spend time relaxing in and around the home.

And they won’t wreck the house?

Get them some play equipment to keep them amused. Your love for them will outstrip worries you may have about your house. A cat is not big enough or strong enough to “wreck the house” .

Have you decided yet OP. ?

Oh how lovely. You need to pay the tax now! Photos!

FuzzyWolf · 05/10/2025 14:58

Kittens can be quite destructive but they are lovely and much happier with another kitten to play with. I’d get his brother as well.

I know! She sent me a message last night saying she thought I had more sense! I actually love him and he has settled in really well.

what are cats like together? Is it worth getting them both?

Definitely get two. A sibling relationship is really good for both cats and owners.

You'll get a dual zoomie session though 😊

LadyHexham · 05/10/2025 15:06

As long as you toilet train it so it doesn't crap in my garden, do what you want.

Katflapkit · 05/10/2025 15:21

I am very much into interiors and aesthetics but I think if you buy into kids and pets/cats you have to be a bit flexible with white glove mentality. I brought home twins to 4 one year kittens. It was a bit wild. No regrets and no injuries. Right now I have 2 teenagers and my late mum's cat. Get the other kitten - you know you want to.

GoodQueenBess · 05/10/2025 15:23

@Katflapkit (and others), read the OP's updates.

Missed the bloody update. Whoo Hoo. Kitten central at your place. Best wishes to all of you

Boomer55 · 05/10/2025 15:49

If you get her brother, make sure you get him neutered. As adults, they have no idea of being related. 😳

This.
I followed advice to get two kittens together but should have just got one.
As soon as they become adults they stopped playing and cuddling up with each other.
They tolerated each other at best, but eventually competed for territory, both of them showed signs of stress at various points (weeing in the house, overgrooming, etc).
One of them died a few months ago, I was (and still am) heartbroken but the other cat is loads happier.

Southshore18 · 05/10/2025 15:53

you are a grows ass women with kids and a house. You can do the hell what you want. Congrats on the kitten and yes, absolutely get the brother. They will keep each other company too! They need lot of attention and having a playmate is fab for them!

Get two! It's the law 😆

Seriously. I've had two sibling kittens for the past couple of months, and they are SO much easier than the single kitten I had previously.

Of course they'll wreck the house. But the singleton did far more damage than two. Which is odd.
But I guess it depends on what 'wreck' means to you?

Ohhh crossposted! They're adorable.

I haven’t told the kids yet that I got his brother, they will have a shock when they come home from their dads 🤣

Just gorgeous, oh let us know their reaction

CatChant · 05/10/2025 17:01

They are adorable!

What a lovely surprise for your DC. They won’t forget this homecoming in a hurry.

GoodQueenBess · 05/10/2025 17:02

Yay! They'll think they're seeing double.

Do these cute kittens have names?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 05/10/2025 17:04

You should always get kittens in pairs. Kittens will entertain and play together so far less likely to wreck the house if you have two than one kitten who will get bored and lonely.

Blueuggboots · 05/10/2025 17:25

Oh yes, get 2!!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/10/2025 17:32

Well done on getting two - they are indeed gorgeous.
Will they wreck your house? Quite possibly but I'm sure you'll forgive them 🤣

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 05/10/2025 17:44

They are so sweet !

You mum should like a worrier
