So I’ve been divorced a year and finally came round to the idea of getting a cat, I think he will be a good companion for the kids and I as we have just moved into our own house. I picked him up a few days ago and he has been great, however my mum has really falllen out with me as she thinks he will ruin the house? I on the other hand had to stop myself from getting his brother so that they can be together?

WhyArePiratesCalledPiratessss · 05/10/2025 17:47

I swore i wouldn't get another cat once my current one dies but... kittens!!!!!
I might need a pair of them.
I feel this might be an acceptable work around... ❤️❤️

Sorry I am going off topic but the brother seems to have quite swollen tummy? Any ideas?

And they won’t wreck the house?

Oh yes, definitely get his brother! They'll be much happier together. I'll be totally honest,kittens/cats can damage stuff in the house. Some are worse than others. Net curtains are quite often a target for kittens, they like climbing up them! Also armchairs/sofas are often targeted for stropping their claws. This can usually be avoided by providing a couple of scratching posts or boards. My current cat has never clawed the furniture, thankfully, but she has targeted quite a few cardboard boxes that had flat pack furniture in! As for pooing or weeing around the house, the vast majority of kittens are so easily trained to use a litter tray (or go outside to do it,if they're going to be an outdoor cat) that it's really not an issue. I've had cats all my life, and have never ever really had to train a cat to use the litter tray. I just showed them where it was and they got the message! Good luck with them! Photos are obligatory on Mumsnet btw!

I always call the vet if I’m concerned about anything - much better than googling or asking on here. Our vet doesn’t charge for phone consultations.

Cute kittens by the way - I have 2 boys who are siblings but not littermates (18 months apart) and they get on really well.

Two cats are definitely better than one! We adopted this brother and sister pair three weeks ago.

Have they both been de-wormed?

itsmeafterall · 05/10/2025 19:12

Cats need training. The string use of 'no' and 'get down' will usually work.

Re scratch furniture I've put some see though sticky back plastic on my sofas and bed frame so they don't scratch on it.

2 together is definitely preferable. Go for it. Your mum is bonkers as cats are brilliant 🤩

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 05/10/2025 19:15

In having de ja vu because we just got two kittens and my mum keeps referencing then wrecking the house, am I sure I don't want to give them back etc etc
Strange!
Anyway, our two are settling in well. They have damaged a couple of things but one was when they were separated after one needed an operation and the other ripped up the carpet at the door separator!
The male keeps peeing on blankets.

Apart from that they are good! They are just babies after all.

RealPerson · 05/10/2025 19:18

I have two cats. They did play together when they were kittens, and I think that was a nice kittenhood for them. However now they are both grown they don't interact very much.

Worms maybe ?

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 05/10/2025 19:19

Hmm.

My two girls occasionally do wee wees behind the bedroom curtains and in a little corner of the kitchen, they have scratched at carpet when they have been locked in a room, they have stolen chops, they have shredded the legs of a dining room chair and the side of a sofa.

They bring in gifts of mice and birds and a squirrel.

They are forgiven every single time. Sadly your mum is a little bit right. However, she will one day get over probably being a dog person.

ohfourfoxache · 05/10/2025 19:21

Oh I’m so glad you got his brother too! (We rescued a mummy cat and 2 of her kittens, and before them we had a brother and sister - it’s wonderful having another family in your home)

It could be a change of food, but I would recommend talking to your vet

I got two girl siblings, I was told it’s better to get two together. They are 8 now, they played so much when they were younger. Now they sleep together and mostly get on well. Go for walks together. They scrap occasionally but not badly. They’ve never wrecked anything in my house. I love them to bits, they are so funny

Cantstopthenoise · 05/10/2025 19:34

I have 2 cats that were a bonded pair in the same litter, they are 2 years old now and we have had them since they were kittens. My Mum was initially opposed to us having one cat once we had moved out of my ex-partner's house (he had cats that made messes in the house, dogs that were shoved outside etc) and I wasn't allowed to claim any of his pets at the time despite one of the dogs being "gifted" to me on my birthday one year, but she relented when she saw the kittens and is pleased that we got them neutered and spayed early on (one of the cats at my ex's had several litters of kittens), trained them not to make messes in the house and so far my Dad has only replaced the wallpaper once when the cats scratched it.

Zempy · 05/10/2025 19:48

Has mother been informed? I would be tempted to forget to tell her and just let her see double when she next visits.

If she overreacts just ask her “are you quite well?”

namechangetheworld · 05/10/2025 20:25

We got a brother/sister kitten duo and it was the best thing we ever did. They sleep together, groom each other, play together and keep each other company when we're out.

No damage to the house yet and we've had them six months. No accidents either. They're not allowed in the lounge or bedrooms without us though, because I'm mean and don't want the potential for stuff to be wrecked when they're left alone. They had free reign of the kitchen/utility, dining room, playroom and spare room when we're out though.

julesagain · 05/10/2025 20:26

Oh do go and get his brother. I took on a brother and sister who had been found without their mum last year and they were about six weeks old at a guess. They have become the most adorable cats, funny and determined and are known as Dude and little miss Sassy pants although their vet records say differently. They also get on brilliantly with our two Border Terriers.

thecatneuterer · 05/10/2025 20:33

Stoptakingmysellotape · 04/10/2025 11:55

Cats are solitary and don't "need" company but if they are bonded in a pair they will be able to live together. Check whether your kitten and his brother are actually bonded first, as otherwise you'll end up with 2 stressed cats who may soil the house as a result. But I homed a bonded male pair who were awesome, adored each other and we had them both until 15 and 16 years.

My mum also told me not to get them but I'm an adult and it's none of her business so I just ignored her. Just make sure you can afford 2 cats before getting another, both of mine had complex health conditions as they aged and it's not cheap.

Cats aren't solitary. Anyone who spends any time observing feral colonies will understand that. Some cats, particularly those separated early from siblings, are scared of other cats. But most cats are very social - spending lots of time together, playing and sleeping together.

Two kittens are always better and happier than one, and also probably less destructive as they play together rather than with the furniture.

As long as you can afford twice the vet bills and, of course, get them neutered at 16 weeks.

How old are they ?
Rescued or from a family home?
Have they been vaccinated and wormed?
Have you checked the litter tray and bedding for worms?
What food are they eating?
Are they drinking plenty of water?

MedusasHead · 05/10/2025 21:09

A swollen tummy is often a nasty case of worms. From experience, get them checked by a vet and deworm regularly. Two siblings is definitely better than one. I’d only ever had single cats until my two now, and it’s a sheer joy. They can be a bit destructive when they’re adolescent but the phase passes quickly.

Overratedd · 04/10/2025 11:54

And they won’t wreck the house?

No one can guarantee that. I have multiple cats and they haven't wrecked my house but I imagine that's partly due to the fact they have virtually unlimited access to the great outdoors. If you want to get the brother too, and you can comfortably care for both, then go for it! I have two siblings and theyre wonderful idea love them and my DC do x

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 05/10/2025 21:14

Omg just seen updates! How beautiful! Agree with pp check for worms just put the treatment on them both x

Davros · 05/10/2025 21:19

You’ve settled with this one, don’t get another. They often don’t get on, even if they’re siblings. Double vet fees, double food and supplies, double shit to deal with
