Why is everyone such a wet lettuce?

Hand-wringing over badges. Upset over name origins. The list goes on and on.

Are people just bored and want some attention online or something?

It's my own fault for reading threads on here, and having other social media I guess!

Can’t speak to my GP. Have decided to go NC.

Perhaps the Ombudsman or your MP?

JohnTheRevelator · 01/10/2025 16:14

Yes I agree. So many people that I had previously thought of as tough and robust are turning into fragile snowflakes.

FirstNationsEnglish · 01/10/2025 16:14

Most of the above 😂☝and wondering if I have I discovered the first normal, sane, rational fun thread of the day? Loving one of the comments about working class resilience. Sending kindness to all lettuces both wet and dry, and anyone triggered, out there.

CharlotteLightandDark · 01/10/2025 16:14

Totally agree many people on here are the wettest of lettuce’s, it’s pretty irritating

3luckystars · 01/10/2025 16:16

How to dry a wet lettuce thread.

I honestly beleive people are not as upset or pussed off as people think they are.

People use mumsnet, other forums like reddit and SM, to just express their inner musings sometimes, or their mild annoyances. It's often out of boredom and a curiosity to see if others think the same way.

Then for some reason, especially on mumsnet, everyone thinks this person is aBsOlUtElY fUmInG and say things like "if this is your biggest problem then you're lucky" or the classic "are you OK?" when the person is actually relaxing on their sofa with a cuppa, perfectly fine.

Of course then, because everyone starts speaking to the person like shit, because it's the Internet and thry can, the person naturally gets defensive, further reinforcing the "OmG you're so angry" idea. And so it continues.

I think generally people don't have the confidence to voice these feelings IRL but still have them. The Internet just brings it all to the surface really. It's always been there and it's actually not that deep.

no idea! I had to re-do my work 'harassment' course last week because I said something that wasn't harassment wasn't - but apparently younger colleagues might struggle with the idea that 2 adults can discuss politics in the pub afterwork and disagree on core beliefs without leading one/other/both to feel 'harassed' by the other!

I saw a video yesterday about how to get mentally prepared for winter. Splitting out the weeks into zones and what needs to be done in those to get through mentally.

Or you could….go about your life as usual with a coat and hat and turn the lights on earlier.

I always think downhill to Christmas from now and then the same to Spring once we pass the shortest day. Glass half full or glass half empty I guess.

Seriously, someone’s offended over anything and everything now. I literally couldn’t give less of a fuck about anything anyone does

I saw a video yesterday of a woman in Florida losing her mind over two ducks mating in a pond in a public park. After yelling at the male duck "get off her!!" many times, and "is everyone just going to just stand there?", she waded into the water to physically separate the ducks. I'm not sure what's happening to many of us, but we don't seem to deal well with reality anymore. So many are losing the plot.

Reminds me of the old joke about the diferences between Southerners and Northerners.
"Very bad weather is forcast for the next few days. Southerners are advised to stay at home; Northerners are advised to wear their big coat".

Londontown12 · 01/10/2025 16:23

I was having this exact convo about people yesterday out walking the dog lol with my DH !! I agree people are not resilient anymore and the awareness videos Jesus Christ don’t get me started !!!! Get outta bed go for a walk and get your head outta ya phone 📱 ❤️

You can't even wish for snow on here without someone carrying on like you are personally manifesting a conga line of broken hips and wrists at A&E.

This made me laugh so much! Thanks

you choose the wrong social media.

Yeah mines full of cats, babies swearing and Peacemaker stuff! Hours of fun!

I know someone who spends the year worrying about next season clothes for her and her family. She has to be 'prepared'.

It's not about picking up clothes at bargain prices through the year either.

.... moaning about what other people are saying on social media that you choose to read.... The list goes on.

VoltaireMittyDream · 01/10/2025 16:29

I thank my lucky stars all the time that I didn't grow up with social media.

I was a fairly miserable and oversensitive child / teenager, but I wasn't being told what to do and think 24/7 by millions of desperate 'influencers', looking to turn up the volume on my fears and insecurities and anxieties in order to monetise them.

I just watched a lot of MTV and felt a bit bored and alienated, and cracked on with stuff.

I was able to grow up to be fairly pragmatic, with a realistic sense of perspective, because I didn't have total strangers crapping into my mind all the time with a mixture of rampant capitalist hustle and unhinged ideological proselytizing.

If I were growing up now I have no doubt I'd be a total mess. So I can't really blame people for being 'wet lettuces' now - there's very little space or support for people to learn to think critically and independently.

BeanQuisine · 01/10/2025 16:30

The last refuge of a moaner is to moan about all the moaners.

ginasevern · 01/10/2025 16:33

"I'm not sure what's happening to many of us, but we don't seem to deal well with reality anymore. So many are losing the plot."

Agreed. And I don't think it's going to end well.

notacooldad · 01/10/2025 16:33

It's an improvement on last week's problem of someone's mum thinking they don't open their curtains "correctly"
Say what?? 😆 🤣
That is hilarious!

I always think downhill to Christmas from now and then the same to Spring once we pass the shortest day. Glass half full or glass half empty I guess.

This is what I do but my God, January and February are so incredibly long and tedious..

And then if we have a late spring and it doesn't start warming up until May I just feel like it's been winter forever.

It does take some mental planning to "get through" it sometimes 😅

You could just try and just enjoy the days without wasting them by wishing they were lighter!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 01/10/2025 16:34

@Notdanishsusan- I started reading your post thinking “
oh yes I’m mentally preparing for winter”, but what I mean is, while I’m going about my life, I’m making my mental “to do” list of stuff to get sorted before the winter starts so I’m not inconvenienced by my own inability to plan ahead.

(public service announcement for non-hysterical people, put your heating on this week for a short while just to make sure it works. If it doesn’t, it’ll be much easier to get an engineer out to fix it and more pleasant to live without heating while you wait for them to get new parts etc than if you wait for the first cold weekend in November when everyone puts their heating on for the first and discovered it secretly died over the summer. Am I now going to be asked to spare a thought for those who don’t have heating?)

Also if you are the sort to get stressed about doing the big shop at Christmas when the supermarkets all have people in them (also doing the big shop), perhaps put in an online order for Christmas week now- you can hold the delivery slot with a couple of bottles of champagne then edit later. Then you won’t have to be panicking about going to Tescos at 6am on Christmas Eve because your food must be the freshest but also you don’t like crowds.

Which supermarket enables you to do this, please?

Tesco only let's me book about 3-4 weeks ahead, maximum
