Pro Reform or not?

WTAFMF · 01/10/2025 11:40

My husband thinks way more people are 'Reform' than you'd think and many keep it quiet.

I disagreed but lately, with the flags and recent march and conversations at school gates, etc. I'm starting to think he may be right.

Pro Reform = You are being unreasonable
Other Party/None = You are NOT being unreasonable

Wondering what the consensus is on Mumsnet..

No, I'm not pro reform. The media has hyped them up and those people who aren't very bright have been sucked in. Nothing they say makes economic sense and they have five MPs, no more. I live near a town which is now a seat of protest about immigration and the majority of those who rock up share a brain cell between them and aren't from the area. Rent a gob

LittleMG · 01/10/2025 15:45

No to reform thank you. The only time I see anyone from reform in my area they are a thug.

zazazaaar · 01/10/2025 15:50

I'm a bit selfish and want the economy to survive and don't want to only have private healthcare.

I'm also not rich so dont want to be poorer. I studied macroeconomics and know exactly what will be coming with the plans they have so hell no.

Oh and whilst I absolutely love England l'm not even a tiny bit racist or nationalistic.

IdaGlossop · 01/10/2025 15:55

Sadly, Reform say things lots of people want to hear. That's what populists do. The opinion polls may show them streets ahead but I'm sure, on Farage's previous form, there is lots of drama in store before the 2029 election.

Tigerthatcametobrunch · 01/10/2025 15:55

It used to be known by pollsters as the shy Tory factor. Reform will see something very similar, working class people, frustrated with labour not representing their interests, but not wanting to admit outloud where they are putting their vote. So they'll just tell you their undecided.

If I tell you I'm voting reform your going to tell me I'm racist or fascist rather than saying "why", so I'm not going to tell you I'm voting reform.

52% of people voting voted for Brexit. Id put money on the vast majority at the very least to be seriously considering voting reform.

HRTQueen · 01/10/2025 15:56

I agree with your husband

No I am not pro Reform in any way its a party run by people who hold racist views and their polices reflect this, the polices are based on creating more division in the country

Dweetfidilove · 01/10/2025 15:57

I am anti-Reform and wish KS would stop giving them so much mileage.

I despair. Brexit has been a disaster - 4% shrinkage of the economy, influx of irregular migrants who can't be returned to France, SMEs ceasing to trade with EU countries because of all the admin, customs hoops to jump through when sending gifts to EU countries. Farage is all mouth and no trousers.

StarlightRobot · 01/10/2025 16:01

Not a Reform supporter.

A lot of people supported Jeremy Corbyn until the public came to its senses and realised his proposals were completely uncosted.

I have some hope that the public will see through Reform’s bluster and reject them as we draw closer to the next election. I hope this is nowlt wishful thinking!

Locutus2000 · 01/10/2025 16:03

Reform's support is a mile wide and an inch deep.

The UK has seen these fuckers off many times before and I'm sure we will again.

Poster wanted to know if there were likely to be more reform voters out there than polls suggest. I suspect yes, based on previous votes and pollster records.

When looking at political likelihoods you need to separate what you think will happen from what you'd like to happen.

It doesn't really matter whether you think Brexit has been a success or not. It matters what the cohort of people who voted for Brexit think and why.

Maddy70 · 01/10/2025 16:10

I think the opposite. I think that people are beginning to see through the reform lies and see them for what they really are

JHound · 01/10/2025 16:11

MN seems to reflect the polls with many being Pro-Reform.

Me being pro-Reform would be like a turkey voting for Christmas.

thecatneuterer · 01/10/2025 16:19

I'm strongly against almost everything they stand for. Brexit should never have been allowed to happen. Immigration generally does more good than harm.

But , they are the only party that aren't intent on trashing the private rented sector. I still couldn't bring myself to vote for them though.

ilovesooty · 01/10/2025 16:21

I think those who are attracted to Reform are anything but quiet.

DervlaGlass · 01/10/2025 16:24

On a personal level, I am scared of reform winning (good chance I will lose my job and several family members have long term health conditions that won't be affordable under the altered healthcare system - I also think their immigration policy will mean care workers simply can't be found as my parents start to need them so either I have to care for them myself or leave them uncared for). I think they have a good chance of winning because I think a lot of the people who support them don't realise their policies are personally targeted.

DervlaGlass · 01/10/2025 16:25

I think if Farage weren't on the scene they'd sink back beneath the sludge, though

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/10/2025 16:28

No, I’d never vote for them.

Racist liars.

The problem is the amount of coverage they get on TV. I’m sick of the sight of them.

JurassicPark4Eva · 01/10/2025 16:29

I don't understand how to vote on your poll.....

But in my local pub last night, the area Reform party had hired the back room for their meeting. Nothing contentious about that - the Lib Dems used to do the same thing 😂

However it was HUGELY heartening to me to see and hear just how many of the regulars - many of whom I've known for years and would have expected to be Reform wannabes - were taking the piss out of Farage, Reform policies etc (amongst themselves at the bar, not interfering with the meeting!).

Also managed to convince a barmaid that the likes of Katie Hopkins are not just for entertainment - they are dangerous and in their actions they make extreme views commonplace so that people accept it as normal and OK to behave like that.

HoomCar · 01/10/2025 17:18

I’m not pro-Reform. In fact, I’m probably anti-Reform. However, I agree with your DH that there are a lot of silent Reform supporters / voters, who’ll remain in the closet and cast their vote in secret.

Take my uncle. Last weekend I was having a conversation with him and my Aunt and she was expressing a distrust of Nigel Farage. I told her what I thought of Reform, all negative. My uncle, who usually gets involved, sat there silently. I expect that he’ll be voting Reform but doesn’t want to admit it.

I should add, that’s his right in a democracy. I’m not critical of him for it.

SpottyAardvark · 01/10/2025 17:27

When the public decide that mainstream politicians are unable or unwilling to do whatever it takes to end uncontrolled mass immigration and stop the resulting transformation of society which nobody voted for, they will elect radical politicians who will.

This isn’t unique to the U.K. Most obviously, America elected Trump twice. But the same issues are producing the same outcomes in Germany with the AFD, France with Le Pen, the Netherlands with Wilders etc.

CandleMug · 01/10/2025 17:28

Push people to their limits and this is what happens. People are that fed up of what appears to be open borders in our country. They’ve been fed up for years (hence voted Brexit ) and it’s just got worse and worse with more people coming here. No government had stopped it or reduced it or built more houses to help accommodate everyone. People are struggling and they have no shits left to give. All they want is a decent life for their children’s future and right now everything looks grim.

The public don’t feel listened to and they’re sick to the back teeth, so much so that they will be willing to push aside the negative aspects of reform. I genuinely think if there was a general election tomorrow they would win.

No party can will be able to stay in charge if they fail to listen to their electorate. That’s called democracy!

vivi45 · 01/10/2025 17:29

No im not and they disgust me. A very small part of me would like to see them get in just so the mindless idiots who buy into all the sensationalism get a taste of how shit they actually are. But not at the expense of the rest of the population I suppose.

Pretty much it.

That and they seem quite young. Easily led.

Zanatdy · 01/10/2025 17:32

If I ever become reform i’ll be getting checked out. Anyone who thinks Farage’s idea’s would stack up into policy is mad IMO. Ok to make up what you’d do when it’s a pie in the sky idea.
