Pro Reform or not?

WTAFMF · 01/10/2025 11:40

My husband thinks way more people are 'Reform' than you'd think and many keep it quiet.

I disagreed but lately, with the flags and recent march and conversations at school gates, etc. I'm starting to think he may be right.

Pro Reform = You are being unreasonable
Other Party/None = You are NOT being unreasonable

Wondering what the consensus is on Mumsnet..

You're asking the wrong section of society on here but yes I totally agree with your husband and believe this has been the case for a while.

Populist politics - the land of the easily swayed and lower critical thinking capacity.

Just look at DJT - he won on a populist platform appealing to the masses with populist narrative.

Reform is the same.
DJT won, Reform may well do the same. Populism by its very nature is designed to capture the hearts and vote of the 'disenfranchised' by entrenching the idea of people being disenfranchised.

Your DH is right. The sad thing is that the rich d white dudes are at the helm and in reality they don't give a shit about the people or 'reform' they care about two things and two things only.

  1. Themselves
  2. Money

Reform are pro SAHPs, so I am pro Reform. All the housewives & SAHDs round here are excited for change and openly chatting about them at the park. They’ve already switched their vote and instructed their spouses to do the same. People underestimate this aspect of their appeal.

Omg. Seriously.

Use your brain. Please.

Edited to say: couldn't tell if you were joshing, if you were, sorry for my remark.

Your disrespect and inability to comprehend that people have different opinions and priorities is exactly what is driving people to switch their vote. Let’s see what happens at the next election!

Not disrespect - incredulity that anybody could possibly be so dim.

People have different opinions. People are sick of governments looking down their noses at people who want to look after their own children. Reform are a refreshing change!

19lottie82 · 01/10/2025 20:32

I won’t be voting. They’re all shit.

Pigeontails · 01/10/2025 20:37

I don’t think pro reform supporters are quiet about their views at all, they’ll tell you at the first opportunity. To me it feels like every other person is pro reform, and their voices are very loud on social media.
I’m hoping it’s just a few big gobs online, and that many others who don’t share those views are simply staying quiet

Well given that the latest Yougov poll (not particularly recent admittedly but not dissimilar to to the others now) has reform on 29%, I’d say the poll on this thread is actually very accurate.

What things is she saying?

I'm not going into details - it's too outing but even one of our Brexit voting, always been very right-wing friends pulled her up on an offensive terms she used and even then she just kept going on, no embarrassment. I really don't want to believe she is being increasingly racist but she makes some kind of offensive comment every time I see her, she's been through a lot recently - I think maybe I'm grasping at straws. I fear think this whole Farage/Reform thing has gripped her and if it has, she's welcome to it but I won't be around.

ChaToilLeam · 01/10/2025 20:56

Farage and Reform are an absolute disaster. They are a sign of the failure of the mainstream political parties but they are not the solution.

It does sound like something going on in that case... This will be interpreted by some as me saying I think all Reform supporters are brain damaged. But in this case she could either have been sucked into a rabbit hole or have some physical brain issues (dementia, strokes, even concussion can all cause atypical behaviour). Or, if she's been depressed due to "going through a lot" could she be on medication? Some anti depressants can really mess you up. Obviously no one can know. But I would keep an eye out rather than dropping the friendship.

ExNotts · 01/10/2025 20:59

Reform had 14% of the vote in the last GE, Labour had 34% because we have FPTP and not proportional representation we have a Government that is not a true reflection of what the population really want. We rarely do.

I am not a Reform voter but am someone that is interested in how people come to their decisions at the ballot box. As much as many people here and I include myself may not like it I can see why they are riding high in the polls. People could complain about the Conservatives and no one expected an instant jam today scenario with Starmer but he has done things that made him unpopular very quickly.

persephonia · 01/10/2025 21:00

(I've seen people's personality change before a stroke. I suspect it was actually they were having smaller strokes first). I don't suppose you can say to someone like that they should go to the doctors because they are being so racist though

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 01/10/2025 21:02

Loads of people I know will vote Reform. I vote Conservative. Loathe Labour.

The media needs to knock it off. Squash the fuckers airtime.

Absolutely!

Goldenbear · 01/10/2025 21:07

I literally don't know anybody who is thinking about voting for Reform but this makes sense if you look at the Map of where people will vote Reform.

Do any of them have children with SEN etc? Is the closing of provision being discussed? Any other policies? Losing working rights?
Cutting £5 billion from public spending (which includes SEN/disability provision)?

I fear reform for the loss of rights, which we would never get back. I remember the 70's, heard stories about earlier times, those rights are essential. I can't help feeling that it fits in, flood the country with people from countries with no rights (thanks Brexit) then remove those rights for everyone.

Lonelycrab · 01/10/2025 21:08

Dweetfidilove · 01/10/2025 21:06

Absolutely!

Media are largely owned by those that will do incredibly well from a reform govt.

And might potentially be be damaged by an ongoing Labour one.

I'm a bit selfish and want the economy to survive and don't want to only have private healthcare.

I'm also not rich so dont want to be poorer. I studied macroeconomics and know exactly what will be coming with the plans they have so hell no.

Oh and whilst I absolutely love England l'm not even a tiny bit racist or nationalistic.

This is a fair summary for me.

Hickorysticks · 01/10/2025 21:10

I believe they're polling around 30%, and I've often heard the statistics that around 30% of people have strong authoritarian tendencies and also around 30% aren't very bright. Go figure!

It's worth remembering in the final election in Third Reich before Hitler seized absolute power and became a dictator, the Nazis only received 33% of the vote. Their largest vote share in the election before was 36%. It only takes a very dangerous minority to enable dreadful things!

Thedogscollar · 01/10/2025 21:13

Hell will freeze over before that lot get my vote.

Thedogscollar · 01/10/2025 21:16

I guess you can't argue with stupid.
