Pro Reform or not?

WTAFMF · 01/10/2025 11:40

My husband thinks way more people are 'Reform' than you'd think and many keep it quiet.

I disagreed but lately, with the flags and recent march and conversations at school gates, etc. I'm starting to think he may be right.

Pro Reform = You are being unreasonable
Other Party/None = You are NOT being unreasonable

Wondering what the consensus is on Mumsnet..

MN is a largely middle class, leftist echo chamber and not representative of the populace at large.

Everyone here was absolutely convinced Brexit would never happen… look how that turned out 😄

Sadly MN is not that anymore, it is a very tedious read with an attack of the Reforms.

Trump won in 2016 according to the American electoral system as it actually exists, not some alternate system which his opponents would like. He won more delegates to the Electoral College than Clinton did. The popular vote is irrelevant.

Yes that’s what I said.

The American electoral system elected him. The majority of those who voted did not.

Using the 2016 election results as evidence that most Americans supported his platform does not correlate with the fact that in raw numbers more Americans supported his opponent.

Would be like claiming most Britons voted for Labour at the last election.

And even in the US 2020 election neither of the two main candidates secured more than 50% of the votes.

clipboardz · 01/10/2025 18:35

Sadly, Reform say things lots of people want to hear. That's what populists do.

This

I'd love less tax & excellent public services but it won't happen.

Yeah, look at how Brexit turned outHmm

An utter disaster where none of the promises were fulfilled.

It also cost us an absolute fortune, and yet people still wonder why money and investment hasn’t been put into their communities and services.

Still, those that voted for it don’t seem to have noticed that. Fool me once…

Reform's support is a mile wide and an inch deep.

The UK has seen these fuckers off many times before and I'm sure we will again.

I wouldnt put money on that. Unless Starmer and his mob start listening to the electorate there will be carnage
Between him and Lammy, every time they open their mouths they push more voters into the arms of Nigel

But you could say that about any elected US president. It’s not like the rules changed when Trump ran for office. That’s how the American system works.

You could use your argument to say that when Biden won, if didn’t mean the majority wanted him, his policies of his party, but he won because of the way their system works…

Do you think he wasn't joining in because he thought he'd be ostracised or attacked? I am sure you wouldn't. But I think online distorts things and makes people less likely to talk to their families/friends if they have different opinions because all you get on X is "the left hate you, Keir Starmer hates you etc". When in reality most people will put up with pretty extreme views from loved ones. At worst you would get a "debate". It's deliberately feeding a kind of truculence/the world is against us in my opinion. I think Garage is definetly playing into that- every time he's criticised he tries to turn it into an attack on ordinary people.

This 100%.

Jumpingthruhoops · 01/10/2025 18:44

I think your husband is right. They're way ahead in the polls and it's actually becoming acceptable for people to admit they like them or, at the very least, acknowledge their existence. And these are the 'voters' we know about - what about those who are still keeping quiet!?

I hate to say it, but all the mud-slinging coming from the Labour camp - particularly Starmer's recent comments towards Farage personally - is only driving people towards Reform and I can totally understand why.

StrongLikeMamma · 01/10/2025 18:45

NO THANK YOU!!!

TwistyTurnip · 01/10/2025 18:47

I could never bring myself to vote Labour now so was planning to stick to my principles and vote Conservative at the next election. But after hearing who they are lining up to replace KS as pm it will be Reform all the way for me. Never been a Labour voter, but very nearly voted for them last time. But I’m glad I didn’t now and Im really disappointed with how they’ve performed so far, how many promises they’ve gone back on, it’s always someone else’s fault it they can’t deliver on something or have to go back on their promises. And they are so totally out of touch with the electorate it’s unreal.

CheeseyOnionPie · 01/10/2025 18:49

Reform are being hyped up by the media which makes me immediately suspicious about which mega rich people stand to expand their vast wealth if Farage gets in.

He's a liar and the party has no real policies. What sort of future PM goes all the way to America just to slag off the UK? He’s laughing at all of you. Temu Trump.

Jumpingthruhoops · 01/10/2025 18:50

CandleMug · 01/10/2025 17:28

Push people to their limits and this is what happens. People are that fed up of what appears to be open borders in our country. They’ve been fed up for years (hence voted Brexit ) and it’s just got worse and worse with more people coming here. No government had stopped it or reduced it or built more houses to help accommodate everyone. People are struggling and they have no shits left to give. All they want is a decent life for their children’s future and right now everything looks grim.

The public don’t feel listened to and they’re sick to the back teeth, so much so that they will be willing to push aside the negative aspects of reform. I genuinely think if there was a general election tomorrow they would win.

No party can will be able to stay in charge if they fail to listen to their electorate. That’s called democracy!

100% this! 👏👏

I am currently trying to decide whether a close friend of mine is racist or has frontal lobe dementia - because recently she has totally lost her filter and is saying some fairly shocking things - I can't hope for her that she has dementia instead of being racist...but I can't listen to the shit that comes out of her mouth. When I explain or question her she doesn't get it. I have asked her to stop talking, change the subject etc but even in the moment, she doesn't seem able to stop or understand that she is being incredibly offensive. I've had just to walk away - but am I walking away from a friend who's ill or a friend who's racist?

Serpentstooth · 01/10/2025 18:52

Not. Not ever. Never in a million years. Snake oil con men and thugs.

Yeah, look at how Brexit turned out. An utter disaster where none of the promises were fulfilled.

But presumably that's because those responsible for negotiating our 'exit strategy' didn't really want to exit?

And those who did want to exit weren't in a position to negotiate anything.

Lonelycrab · 01/10/2025 19:03

The thing is, and I don’t deny reform do appeal to a fairly large number of voters,

The appeal is spread too thin across the country for it to have the impact some are predicting.

Look at the last GE, count up the Lib Dem parliamentary seats and then count the votes cast. it would seem the LD are 10x as popular. Of course they’re not.

But with our fptp election system that’s the way it works. This is the problem when trying to claim that reform will simply walk the next election (4yrs away let’s remember)

yellowspanner · 01/10/2025 19:05

I'm pro Reform

No that’s simply not true. We all remember the pics of David Davies arrogantly turning upto the negotiating table with the back of a fag packet. Are you claiming he wasn’t a euro sceptic?

Don’t kid yourself NF would have got a better deal; there wasn’t one on offer, it’s as simple as that.

I mean, Farage beetled all the way over to America recently to tell the American Congress how awful the UK was. If I was minded to take offence, I would take offence at that as a UK citizen.
I don't like inflammatory rhetoric. But Farage is 61 years old. He isnt some toddler running around pulling things over and making a mess, that noone can criticise because we all believe in gentle parenting.
Being judged on what you say, and having your policies criticised is part of being a politician. Especially when your policies run counter to British values.

I am anti-Reform and wish KS would stop giving them so much mileage.

The media needs to knock it off. Squash the fuckers airtime.

Greenwitchart · 01/10/2025 19:43

I would never support Reform.

Farage helped bring the disaster of Brexit and he is just another entitled politician who is only in it to make more money for himself and his rich mates.

Untrustworthy, snake oil seller with support from dubious sources like Trump, Musk and Russia.

Plus of course I cannot stand racist and xenophobic policies...
