People will have however many children they have anwyayw. This just reduces poverty.

Yeah people aren't really having kids just for few quid extra.. and only people in the most difficult circumstances will have to terminate because they genuinely can't afford it (which is awful). Most people's decision to have or not have children will be about many other factors. So yes all the cap did was reduce some kids living standards which is pretty shit tbh. But those kids can't vote yet so who cares about them I guess?

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 19:08

Ok crashing maybe a bit emotive, but all I know is I can’t afford what I used to, food prices are going up again, inflation is growing, there is no growth and Rachel doesn’t have a clue.

We haven't had growth since the 08 crash, we never recovered from that. Low interest rates just masked it

Finally they have done something right! The two child cap only served to keep children in poverty, which is abhorrent in a country as developed as ours. Also the pps point of no one being pushed towards feeling like they need to abort because of finances is a salient point. My child was also conceived on the pill. I would have been devastated if I'd felt I'd had to abort because I couldn't afford to feed him

Its abhorrent to work as little as possible whilst claiming off the backs of everybody else.
Never thought of working full time to feed your child?

Trickle up economics works better than trickle down, money given to the most poor gets spent because it’s needed and that contributes to the economy. As long as it doesn’t all get swallowed up by payments to big organisations like electric and gas companies

Yeah I’m sure Wetherspoons are celebrating

No, people re producing whilst not in decent jobs, making good financial and contraceptive decisions and not having children in stable relationships is bringing children in poverty.

People are poorer because of the lack of growth.

MidnightPatrol · 30/09/2025 18:53

I agree. I suspect it’s already the end for them tbh.

Not only failing to address welfare spending but actually increasing it - particularly with the lens that this will be viewed through of ‘paying people to have kids they knee they can’t afford’… plus the immigration angle…

I think the swing voters will be looking at this with raised eyebrows, as their tax bill goes up yet again.

To placate the left of their party? No idea how it can be paid for

EchoedSilence · 30/09/2025 19:10

Good. Anything that lifts children out of poverty is a good thing.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 19:10

Precisely. Is this all Labour have to defeat Reform?? It’s a terrible look

Didn't Reform already say they would remove the cap?

Yeppppp · 30/09/2025 18:51

How is the economy “crashing”?

Admittedly, it’s not pulling up trees, but where’s your evidence that it’s “crashing”?

Is that you, Rachel?

MyLimeGuide · 30/09/2025 19:11

FLOWER19833 · 30/09/2025 18:56

So people on benefits can have more kids whilst working people will be paying for it. Wonderful

And working people dont have kids because they cant afford it. And the cycle of shit parenting grows and grows....

user1476613140 · 30/09/2025 19:12

Yeppppp · 30/09/2025 18:45

Get in! I can have three more now!

🤣🤣🤣🤣👏

smilingfanatic · 30/09/2025 19:12

I dislike the general entitlement in this country around expecting the state to pay for this, that and the other, but I am in favour of lifting this cap. Whatever the rights and wrongs are of having more kids than you can afford, no child should be living in poverty in the UK. It's a small but meaningful difference.

I'd balance it by removing the triple lock and means-testing pensions. My dad is one who needs his pension and winter fuel allowance removing, pronto. The guy is bloody minted. I'd much rather his benefits went to a hungry child.

(he disagrees)

If people being on benefits contributed to the health of the economy, we'd be getting richer, not poorer.

OonaStubbs · 30/09/2025 19:12

Terrible decision that will backfire on Labour massively. They are supposed to be the party for working people, not the party of benefits.

user1476613140 · 30/09/2025 19:13

DH is getting that vasectomy reversal booked in. I've already got 4, think we will plan, oh, at least another 2 or 3 now after this news😀🤪

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 19:13

Child benefit is pretty much a universal benefit apart from the mega-rich.

The mega rich?! 😆😆

Viennabear · 30/09/2025 19:14

Sadly I don’t think it’ll be the children that benefit from the extra money.

ARichtGoodDram · 30/09/2025 19:14

I wouldn't be surprised if they announce a reduction in the amount people will get, but dress up/hide the cut with the fact more people are entitled to more.

That's exactly what the Tories did when they removed Widowed Parents allowance - bigged up increased eligibility while quietly slashing the amounts

WhathappenedYesterday · 30/09/2025 19:15

Amazing ! I have 7!

Our debt is 2.9 trillion as at September 2025 which is 96.4% of our GDP.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 19:16

No idea how it can be paid for

We definitely can't afford the triple lock so there must be a magic money tree somewhere!

ThatDreamyLemonBiscuit · 30/09/2025 19:16

In the midst of a fertility crisis, which puts the whole welfare state (most immediately, the state pension) at risk of collapse, lifting the cap is an absolute no-brainer. Good decision, should have been made far sooner.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 19:16

They are supposed to be the party for working people, not the party of benefits.

🤦🏻‍♀️ you realise many working people get benefits?

EchoedSilence · 30/09/2025 19:17

Receiving UC doesn't make you a shit parent.

Arrrrrrragghhh · 30/09/2025 19:17

Athreedoorwardrobe · 30/09/2025 18:46

The cap was always horrific. As someone who has fallen pregnant twice whilst on contraception absolutely no one should feel pressured to abortion because they'll be unable to feed the child. In this modern era in a wealthy western country, it's disgusting.
And the cap just entrenches poverty. As higher birthrate are linked to poverty. It makes the issues worse. Because those kids don't even stand a chance.

It’s not actually enough to lift anyone out of poverty though is it?

It does mean is those families that are already heavily benefit dependent will be even more so. Those that have been ok without it so far will now get it. Nuts.
