But not when we have an aging population that outnumbers the younger ones who are meant to be paying tax to support the former.
If birth rates keep declining then it will just get worse and worse.

AI will support the elderly, and yes people will have to work for longer. That’s a given anyway. That way you can manage the change. There are many benefits you are ignoring. The world is over populated.

is an extra £17 a week towards the 3/4/5 child really going to lift these families out of poverty sufficiently to break the cycle they may find themselves in?

^ this. I really think Labour are already finished now so there's not a lot they can do to pull this back in. It's a shame as so many had high hopes of this Labour government but things are going from bad to worse with empty rhetoric..

Will make no difference but fired in a complaint to Labour Party there - disgusted that rest of us be told we need to pay more, work longer, do without or build the foundations 🙄 whilst some of those who will benefit refuse to work. Absolute disgrace.

My MP is a Labour Cabinet Minister. He’s getting an email about this, from me, tomorrow.

AI wont financially support the elderly

No full detail yet but if it does that's £12000+ a year extra for those with 6 kids. Why work?

Plenty of reasons. I certainly won't be giving up my job and having another 4 dc for 12k a year.

It's not that figure. Currently, the Universal Credit child element (which is currently capped, not child benefit) pays £3,513.72 for each child.

So, if the cap on 2 children was lifted and if the amount payable is not changed for the 3rd and subsequent children, then somebody on Universal Credit with 6 children could get £21,082.32 tax free each year just for those children. That would be separate to any additional amounts they would receive for their rent and other payments they could be eligible for.

What do you ideally want? If you could determine the birth rate

Gingernessy · 30/09/2025 21:30

EasternStandard · 30/09/2025 21:21

Is this correct? I’m guessing so

£292 per child a month is £21024 per annum for 6 kids.
I guess it'll depend if the overall benefit caps stay in place too

HorsesDuvets · 30/09/2025 21:30

BettysRoasties · 30/09/2025 21:26

Well I mean a falling birth rate is great for net zero no?

Do we really want the only people propping up the birth rate to be those who pop out a new bay every 4/5 years so they don’t have to work? Generational benefit claimants.

You'll struggle to persuade the majority of MN that this really happens, and regularly.

The left-leaning, middle class majority here just don't know people like that, so they can't possibly exist, even though we 'normal' people know plenty of them.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 21:31

@Fidgetybit I wouldn't have 6 dc for 20k, would you?

HPFA · 30/09/2025 21:31

Isnt it a lovely society where people will write to their MPs demanding that children live in poverty? The thought of a child having a slightly better life makes them furious?

Are they being punished for the crime of
being born?

@Nestingbirds how will AI support the elderly?

They will do all the care work. AI will complete all of the heath checks and respond to health monitoring devices. They will clean and maintain the living spaces. Cook and serve food. Monitor old people 247’ and even keep them company.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 21:32

@HorsesDuvets of course they exist just like benefit cheats. They just statistically are small. If millions were having dc for benefits would the birth rates be so low?

abracadabra1980 · 30/09/2025 21:32

ILoveLukeAlderton · 30/09/2025 18:48

But like so many things we can’t actually afford it! Yes there’ll be some people who are unlucky with contraception but as someone who only had one child because I knew we couldn’t afford a second I don’t want to pay for others to have as many as they like without the same consideration.

I totally agree with you on this.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 21:33

@Nestingbirds that sounds amazing, when will they start? Also who pays for the service?

Flight of high taxpayers come November...

Edited

This is a myth. All the research suggests that only a very small number of high rate tax payers relocate in response to a higher tax burden - social / family ties to the UK keep them here. They can afford to prioritise living in their preferred country precisely because they are rich. We are in this category and would not be going anywhere.

It'll administer "Carrousel" as soon their no longer fit to work.

Or trying to prevent more misery and poverty stricken children maybe?

When? in 2234?
You are watching too much sci-fi.
People in care homes need a personal and human touch. You will never get that from AI.
Would you want that for a relative? Or for yourself?

How much more poverty do you think these vulnerable kids will be in if the country is so indebted and crippled with high interest repayments that the current welfare bills cannot be maintained?

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 21:34

@HPFA I bet half the people dismayed are low earners/received benefits themselves.

MaturingCheeseball · 30/09/2025 21:35

This is outrageous. £24k a year if six kids, plus child benefit, plus free school meals, plus housing benefit… All tax free.

I’m struggling to understand who exactly is “poor” in our society because soon it certainly won’t be those on benefits.

Daisymay1000 · 30/09/2025 21:35

Athreedoorwardrobe · 30/09/2025 18:46

The cap was always horrific. As someone who has fallen pregnant twice whilst on contraception absolutely no one should feel pressured to abortion because they'll be unable to feed the child. In this modern era in a wealthy western country, it's disgusting.
And the cap just entrenches poverty. As higher birthrate are linked to poverty. It makes the issues worse. Because those kids don't even stand a chance.

Orrrrrr orrrrrr hear me out… instead of abortion…a job to support the children?

why should working families have to decide if they can afford another one but people on benefits can just have them to receive benefits? It’s absolutely wrong to lift the cap.
